I think myanimelist should remove this from thier list becuase its clearly said that non japanese produced shows or shows made for an external market aren't anime xd.

Tho i have t osay some of the issues it presents even if not as cartoonishly presented in the show, are not fake, transgender homeless people are real, specially in highly empobrished cities or places where the culture isn't really in favor of something like this, you even got an example of one in Tokyo Godfathers. The racism shown tho, nowdays it wouldn't be so clear, they usually just keep it to themselves and fuck over them without telling them directly
@Carpal_Tunnel69 but the studio and writers are Japanese so it’s anime.

I think I found the professor. Thank you. Good night.

@cachaito lol, that is cropped, isn't it? I remember this scene being a lot wider and with a few more people, but it looked like the easiest version of Where's Skinner Waldo ever made. The crop makes it even funnier. If that turns out to be anything other than a red herring prank for the audience (meaning it's a lookalike and not him), then Lazarus are probably the most bumbling, incompetent hero group that I've seen in a while.

Did anyone else Shout at the screen when they saw Skinner like “OH MY GOD HE’S RIGHT THERE USE YOUR EYES!!!!” Cuz that’s what I said.

Also I think that Every episode’s intro there’s gonna be a different Lazarus member talk about their experience with Hapna. Cuz episode 2 was Leland’s Experience and now episode 3 is Chris’s experience. If only she realized what would happen many years after she took Hapna. if only her thoughts she said out loud answered her earlier. But now she’s in deep with the other Lazarus members.
@V1P3Rdmk LMAO YES

@Gsarthotegga Yup, that's a cropped image. And it would be funny if Lazarus were as incompetent a group of heroes as they seem now.

I am finally invested but I am not about to endorse or denounce this show to anyone. I still have a lot of issues with it but will wait to see how it all pans out first before I say anything super negative. You would think, with only 13 episodes to fill, this would not be a slow burn type of series but here we are. Clearly it is.

Plenty happened this episode anyways. And yes, everyone was probably screaming, "open your eyes", at that part where it clearly looked like Skinner.

You said "these people were already discriminated against by society, so why the double-whammy?". Black people are heavily discriminated against.

If you actually paid attention to the episode, the trans woman was more than just "Hey I am trans and life sucks". She not only brought insightful information to Axel and Doug, but it expanded on the lore of Axel who is the main character.

Besides, as far as I am aware you and everyone else who is mad at this episode never complain when diversity is actually forced like FGO whitewashing Aztec gods or the Sailor Moon English dub removing the queer couple. But the moment a trans woman shows up, now you suddenly care about diversity being "forced". And aren't these the same people demanding "original trans characters" and shit among the lines of that?

"Being black is normal" that tells me everything I need to know ab your incel ass. Go touch some grass.
@Fukoku Calling me an "incel" tells me everything there is to know about you. And I mean literally EVERYTHING. Get fucked, you radical ideologist.

I hate to break it to you but a lot of your favorite media is "woke".

Attack on Titan is one of the most "woke" animanga out there. There are so many real world parallels that there's entire articles around them. Star Wars, the empire is inspired by America. One Piece tackles so many real world problems like slavery, racism, and human trafficking. The Fire Nation in Avatar: The Last Airbender is modeled after Imperial Japan in WWII.
@Fukoku It's astounding how illiterate you are. You really cannot separate in-universe politics from real world-politics.

This was an amazing episode for a couple reasons. The hunt for Skinner continues to intensify, we’re as close as anyone has been in years to finding him thanks to that Istanbul intel, but the more this show goes on, it’s clear that he’s not the monster he’s been made out to be.

Growing up is accepting that Skinner did nothing wrong and humanity clearly deserved to get wiped out if they were doing it to themselves and destroying the planet. You look at that video he sent his grandmother and this isn’t a dude who harbors any sort of ill-will towards anyone. Dude got laughed out a UN climate change meeting because he had the audacity to hold the biggest polluters to account.

But what made this episode amazing for me was the fact in a fucking anime, I just saw two characters have a discussion about and bond over the discrimination that Black people and transgenders face in society. That Doug convo damn near brought a tear to my eyes. Thank you Watanabe. Means the world to me. Always been an ally.

Hearing the call to prayer in Istanbul was also a dope moment, but LMAO at Leland wearing a Saudi outfit in Turkey 😂 not all Muslims are Arabs bro.

Didn’t have a ton of action in this episode, but when we did get it, it was dope. Axel vs the hoodlums was awesome, you can feel Chad’s touch all over this series.

Baited the hacker award. I’m surprised Skinner’s partner fell for that Axel bait. Can’t wait for next episode to hopefully get some more on him.
@Marinate1016 I think Watanbe really understands the black struggle and how to write black characters. I love that back and forth between Jill and Doug. That shit hit me man. This is the same guy that gave us Carole after all.

im still interested. i think the writing is getting less fluid theres so many 'and then' moments but its done in an interesting way like scene to scene its ok but as an overall story. and then they check a hospital and homeless camp and we learn more about doug then axel takes leland to find the one belinda in turkey who makes the best baklava. like ok thats a decision theres no natural flow to it they just gotta do that next.

I like that this show is getting somewhere. It's a very interesting vision of the future. Someone actually built the hyperloop, and the trend toward smaller, thinner, and less obstructive bezels on smartphones has been entirely reversed for some reason.

But I have to say, despite how easy it is to talk to real computer professionals, that's some of the worst hacker technobabble I've ever heard. It's like they weren't even trying.

That Hyper Cube (Loop) geeked me out for good, so I did some rough calculations based on the claimed 6-hour transit time and the base of the team, which I think is in Brooklyn, NYC (they're in the US either way).

A direct route from NYC to Istanbul, via plane and above the Atlantic, is a distance of ~8,000 km. So if the Hyper Cube could magically float on the Atlantic, its average speed to reach Istanbul would need to be 8,000 / 6 = 1,330 km/h - just a dash above the speed of sound.

A very high speed but theoretically feasible, since loops have no air to crash into and slow down; they're deep vacuumed, so they could cross the speed of sound (in air) inside a vacuum assuming an adequate propulsion method (most likely maglev).

However, since trains and train tubes cannot float, and since no tunnel or bridge should be expected to cross the Atlantic for at least a few centuries, the only way for a train to reach Istanbul from NYC is via Canada, the Bering Strait (85 km), Russia and the rest of Asia.

I had ChatGPT calculate the distance of such a hypothetical train route. I expected at least 20,000 km and it ended up at 21,000 km. Which for a transit time of 6 hours means an average speed of... 3,500 km/h (2,175 mph).

3,500 km/h is almost 3 times the speed of sound. Although I'm a geek and I also write sci-fi, I can think of no sane way for a train capsule to reach such a speed, even in deep vacuum and using the highest grade superconducting magnets for maglev.

An insane way to do it would be by strapping the capsule into a... rocket.
But then the vacuum loop structure would not be required, and we also saw no rocket exhaust in that scene; they appeared to be using maglev tech.

The capsule we saw was also moving far slower than it should be moving inside the loop. That clearly wasn't a supersonic speed, it was vanilla maglev at most (500 - 600 km/h). If the capsule (somehow) moved at 3,500 km/h its 'speed blur' would make it almost invisible.

It’s clear you do not know what you’re talking about. Shinichiro Watanabe (the director for Lazarus) has always been diverse with his works. Cowboy Bebop you got black people and heavy Western influence. Samurai Champloo, you have a gay man and a heavy Western hip hop influence.

Hell he’s not even the only one to be diverse. You got entire genres of BL/Yaoi and GL/Yuri. Your favorite anime Attack on Titan has LGBTQ characters (Hange, Historia, and Ymir). I can go on but you get my point.

I'm going to hijack this dicussion just to mention that I noticed you are a MAL regular, I see your pfp and reviews on almost every show airing in the last few years and I've gotta say brother you have the shittiest taste I've ever encountered on this entire website lmao. You rate almost everything a 9 or 10 and of the many reviews I've read from you are so vapid and devoided of any substance I feel like they were written by a highschooler.
Bringing the fact you "watch a lot of shit" like it has any validy of your opinion when you basically change favorites every season is insane, for anyone in their right mind it just means you have no actual grasp on your taste in anime and just enjoy anything that your eyes come across. Considering you claim in your profile to "watch every anime every season", I do think that you don't actually ever have the time to sit down and reflect on the shows you're watching and that's how you end up having half the MAL catalogue rated a 9 or higher.

Bitterness aside I do have a legit take about Lazarus in relation to this discussion.

I don't think in any way possible that anything in Lazarus is "woke", I honestly find this word stupid as fuck and also devoided of any meaning, that's why me, personally, I have never and will never use this word in an analysis in my life.
However what I want to pinpoint is how dishonest the entire script and presentation is, which is blatant to anyone that has ever seen anything from Watanabe's career. All aspects of this show are reminiscing of his past works, in particular his 2 most popular which are Cowboy bebop and Samurai champloo.
The main character could have looked like anyone, not like Watanabe hasn't created widely different characters such as Dandy or Tuesday. But here the main character IS SPIKE AND MUGEN. He just IS a mix of those 2, he fights exactly like Mugen and has the exact demeanor has Spike, disagreeing with this would be pure delusional behaviour, on top of that each fight scenes he takes part of has the same Jazzy soundtrack as cowboy bebop to hammer the nail even harder.
The reason of this is that Watanabe doesn't want to create anymore, he just wants to live back his past success, he could have made this 13ep show a seriel story, but he chose to make it episodic, even though the plot suffers from it deeply and hasn't really progressed in 3 entire episodes. Why did he do that? Because CB and SC are episodic stories, and that's his style, a style suited for longer shows without core narrative which Lazarus isn't.
This whole premise of a drug apparently the entirety of mankind has taken without noticing it would kill them is absurd.
This teenage hacker prodigy who dresses like your average modern egirl in the year 2052 is absurd, and also waifu pandering.
Having only 6 people actively looking for a guy who made a drug killing the entire human race is absurd and immersion breaking.
Trying to justify your main villain as an eco terrorist is absurd, especially when it is treated shallowly like this: "don't kill the trees pwease".
This leads me to this episode. In a show which has already a lot of issues tackling its core themes of ecology, drug addiction and other cyberpunk-esque thematics. It is baffling how Watanabe dare waste his time including a small passage about black oppression in the mix, especially for once again, treating this in a shallow manner. Watanabe could have made an entire episode dedicated to this Doug character, who's so far one of the only good characters in the show but he chose not to. He'd rather just throw in some lines which are totally unrelated for the main plot to give a vague sense of background but it totally fails because this plot point is totally forgotten minutes later and will probably never be brought up again, for the only reason that the anime doesn't have time to waste on side thematics, yet Watanabe deliberately chose to.
The issue isn't having a passage briefly mentionning a character suffering from oppression, the issue is that this passage is too brieve to be important and comes from nowhere in a show already lost in its own script and story.

I could rant more about the whole lack of honesty this show displayed, for example the casting choice because I'm a an expert on seiyuu shit, but I don't think it's necessary because the issues this show has are obvious even to a casual audience. Right now it has a mediocre score even more MAL standards and is basically talked anywhere on the internet, remind you Watanabe has stated before the release of Lazarus that "it's the best show I have ever made, better than cowboy bebop". Thankfully, Watanabe's best show isn't chosen by him, because otherwise holy hell how bad we would have it.

I’m not reading anything, speak for yourself and elaborate.

@Fukoku Attack on Titan is 0% political, but it's a really exposing moment for you to post that.

But frankly, I don't want to reply to you anymore. Your profile pic makes it feel as if you're jerking off while posting. Makes me uncomfortable, creep.

I’m not expecting you to respond to me but I just want to close off by saying this.

You are a grown man who is about to enter your 40s, but you are acting like a 15 year old. You are throwing a hissy fit over a trans woman in a show that nobody is forcing you to watch. Seriously, I don’t even give a fuck about Jill and you’re over here freaking out as if she’s out to get you.

When me and plenty of others won the arguments you were just throwing insult after insult towards us instead of actual responses. That tells me a lot about you.

I want to explain how Attack on Titan is political but I got better shit to do than to talk to a man-child.

Bro you have TEN FUCKING THOUSANDS forum posts on this very website since 2019, you have 415 REVIEWS and watch 50 anime each seasons.

Bro you are JOBLESS, you are unemployed who the hell do you think you're going to deceive with that lmao, you spend more time on this website a day that I do watching anime a month.

Watch yourself in a the mirror you're larping as a japanese anime expert watching anime 30 hours a week making review to circlejerk with fanboys at 28 YEARS OLD BAH GAWWWD.

You are illiterate and cannot either read or write, that's probably why your reviews remind me of 2000s anime forums, thank god I don't have the energy to dig through your youtube channels to see how much more time a day you waste talking about anime on the internet lmao.

@Fukoku Yup it's sad how the definition of the term has become bastardized, I genuinely don't understand how these people don't get exhausted by being so miserable all the time. POC exist, women exist, LGBTQ people exist, them being present in media literally has no effect on anyone so for people to be losing their shit over that is just pathetic 💀 and they always claim that it's "pandering" or "virtue signaling" but conveniently they never explain HOW. They just see those groups represented in a show or game and throw that label on lmao.

It’s like you didn’t read what I or anyone said and agreed with mental people… Never talk again bro
@Confused_100 Who’s the “mental” person I agreed with. The last person I replied to, who shares my sentiments that crying about this show being wOkE over this latest episode is a huge nothingburger? How does not being bothered by whatever is bothering others in this thread make me or others who are in agreement with me mental.

And don’t tell me what to do “bro,” I’ll go ahead and keep talking 😊✌️
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL has literally become a brain dead extension of the worst and most moronic aspects of Twitter 🗣️🗣️🗣️

You sound pretty upset bro. Ten thousand forum posts because I post my thoughts after every episode of the seasonals. You’re on an anime forum acting like an elitist because you’re antisocial lmao not my fault you can’t express yourself. People who have jobs not at McDonald’s can watch stuff at work, sorry you didnt go to school to get a degree. Maybe instead of crying over high scores you can sign up for a university of Phoenix class. Calling me jobless when my social media linked in my profile shows me traveling the world while you’re crying about me enjoying everything I watch lmaooooo miserable

Unlike you, I'm not going on forums telling people "I've watched anime before you were born" and "I've watched more anime than you do in your whole life" because you're seething someone called you "a tourist", also berrating a guy because he is a "white dude from a iowa" implying his opinion do not matter because he's not japanese, despite that you ain't japanese either.
You seem to be in serious needs of people's approval, that's why you also brought for some reasons "tens of thousands of people agree with me" which doesn't matter at all in the argument and prove that you have 0 confidence in your actual opinions and just want to prove that you're right because you're stalking this website 24/7. Also I'm sorry but, none of those people agree with you, they see you gave solo levelling a 10 and give you a little emoji because it goes in their way of thinking.

Do you have any argument defending Lazarus in this episode discussion thread or you just want to "own the bigots" whatever that means? Personally I already written my own.

Again look at you writing books over me. You’re so mind broken it’s sad. At the end of the day what’s gonna happen? Nothing, I’m gonna keep writing and reviewing and you’ll keep crying. I own you. Now get out my mentions.

What a pathetic man you are. Truly hope your gigantic ego isn't hurt from someone calling you a tourist on the internet at 28 years old.
Just read this review of Lazarus before writing yours and giving it a 9/10 https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=559465

You’re calling me pathetic but you’re crying over my scores, reviews and me being an active member of an anime forum while you’re on said anime forum. So yes, I do own you because my opinion means this much to you. People who really don’t care, just ignore you lol.
