Finally saw this a few hours ago. I thought it was pretty good. The animation and direction are excellent, especially for this time. I had to keep reminding myself that this came out in 1988 instead of the 2000s. What's worth noting is that I have already read the manga, and I find it interesting that the ending

That being said, my most major gripe is the following:

Overall 8/10 would recommend

I finally watched it. I had started it several times but never finished.

It was a bit better than meh πŸ˜’

Considering when it was created, it is very good. The adaptation and music were great. Reminds me of 2001 A Space Odyssey.

I’ll probably never watch it again.

It has few problems but ones again don't compare it with the new animes in market. And a tip from me: whenever start watching a movie finished all at once. If you watch half of it and leave it like that the excitement would fade up by the time (just for movies).

This movie was definitely a landmark in anime and has become a cult classic as well, but I expected it to be much better tbh. Maybe I'll read the manga...

Just finding the movies right about now. Its actually so fuckin amazing. Despite having so much classic type of art and such. I still like the detailed among the story. And the thrilling effect it had, damn, so good than i thought.
9/10 shall be enough, referring how old this show was.

This was a lot better than I expected, considering its age. I can certainly understand why it would have grabbed the attention of western audiences in the late 80s, if they were used to animation being the usual stuff you saw on Saturday morning TV.

I think it's aged relatively well, too. Of course the animation is not of a quality one expects now, but that almost adds to its quality. The dystopian future setting was done brilliantly well, and the story, while it probably could have used a bit more polish, hung together just fine.

Some classics should be left in the history books. This one is still well worth the watch, though.

I’ve been thinking for quite some time what to write about this film, probably most difficult forum post I ever had to do on MAL.

For me Akira was something when it comes to unusual movies. The movie itself was a thing that I will be thinking of for next whole week. The atmosphere of this film is phenomenal, the whole neon Tokyo is so well made that I wish it could be reality, well its looks not the whole “problem with military secrets” part. I guess I could go on and talk about jawdropping animation which must’ve put everything else including Studio Ghibli to shame that year. Just imagine watching this in cinema during that time o_o

But I won’t be writing anything else about it because everyone can see it for themselves if they are not blind of course. The directing and enjoyment are also very strong parts of this film. Now what makes this film not worthy of ‘masterpiece’ for me and many other people which saw this film is very confusing and rushed plot, which still managed to be good in some parts, the characters also are often pushed as weak point of Akira but I don’t see it being too much of a problem.

With all that being said, Akira isn’t a film for regular viewer. It goes way way deeper than that and it’s impossible to fully understand what this film wanted to show and say. I tried really hard to see and understand many things in it but failed at some parts. I believe that this film is either an absolute garbage utter nonsense or one of the greatest sci-fi creations of all time. This really depends on a viewer and how he understands term ‘sci-fi’.

This film is an easy choice for one of the most beautifully animated films of all time and one of the most unusual ones out there. I don’t even know how to rate something known as “the film that changed everything” but I think it deserves praise from every viewer of it out there.

9.3/10 is a very risky and personal rating to give for this but I can’t leave this without giving it a score just because it needs one just like every film out there.

Rewatched in cinema. (first time)

The 4000 pixels or the heavy sharpening/filtering weren't kind on several shots, making sheets shadows bigger and standing out, resulting in many character cellulos looking very flat.
Certain colours seemed also weird? (not sure)

4k might be a useless and slightly damaging luxury (and a luxury only in reputation), but watching this film in a cinema is clearly a superior experience in visuals and sounds. Don't hesitate if you only saw it on TV (broadcast or VHS/disc).

Enjoyment: 5/5
Score: 8/10

December 3, 2020
@Zadion It didn't "age well enough", everything you stated (and liked or disliked) was already there back when it was released.
Also, if someone ever tried to sell you this film as a meaningful piece of art that had something to say, what a liar they were.

Rewatch in theater on Sunday. (I think today is the last day it will be in theaters for this run).

I'll agree that something was definitely off with the shading and color in this format. Seemed washed out compared to watching at home (though i usually have my settings set to be extra bright and colorful, so that could be me).

But wow, the sound. Just an awesome experience to have in theater, especially in the scene at the hospital tripping balls. Really a unique experience.

Overall, actually lost some of it's charm on rewatch. Maybe it's because i loved it for it's stunning animation for it's time, and discovering the scenes that have influenced influenced media ever since for the first time.

Was still blown away buy the amount of talent that went into all that hand drawn action.

Rewatched Akira for the first time in a decade on big IMAX screen. What an amazing experience! Those gorgeous, luscious hand drawn visuals are a feast for the eyes. Yes, in some of the scenes the colouring seemed a bit opaque due to the upgrade, but is so small a thing in the big picture that it fades into irrelevance. And the sound with that imperious soundtrack was almost a religious experience.

Seeing it scored with an 8.17 on MAL with some of the garbage that is ranked above it is enough to cement my contempt for this ridiculous voting system.

So... A little over 31 years after the supposed 'WW3' (If it's even a world war) I finally get to watch this.

A future dystopian city populated by the rich elites and the normal citizens with a sprinkle of chaos caused by gangs such as the motorbike gangs. Tetsuo being one of those gang members. A guy with a fiery personality and immense inferiority complex on his friend, Kaneda. The show took the first half of the movie to introduce various aspects of the characters and the world before finally getting to the highlights, that is Tetsuo becoming an esper, capable of wielding insane telekinetic powers. Shit happens, his body crushed his unfairly-treated girlfriend (Kaori) and then the remnants of Akira transferred Tetsuo along with the 3 psychic kids into a newly formed universe for them to live and wonder about.

Honestly, this movie is both straightforward yet ambiguous for its entire 2-hour long playtime.
The animation was awesome for its time, hell it's still awesome 3 decades later! The OST was a mixture of a futuristic and creepy vibe. But man is it difficult to think about the characters and the story in general. I see why this is a controversial show, especially with the various themes and topics it's trying to convey to the audience. There are so many unexplained subjects that were mentioned throughout the movie, the same can be said to the various characters that were shown, hell even the main characters barely got any background to them. Well, it makes sense when you consider that the whole movie only covers the first half of volume 1 and last half of volume 6 of the manga. Many things are left out and although they did well to blend everything together, you can just feel that there is a discrepancy in the movie.

Still, this is quite a historic piece I just watched. The anime that brings forth what many calls classics which yet again bring more and more generation of anime. This is pretty much what started it all.

I'm so happy this film is not dramatically overrated here like it is on RateYourMusic (top 150 all time my ass).

While stylistically awesome and surprisingly straight-forward, narratively, there's a whole world behind the movie that is barely graced. The entire setting is open to interpretation at best and straight-up ignored at worst, while the core narrative just isn't that interesting. Unlike Angel's Egg or even, I don't know, Ghost in the Shell, which had something to say, I didn't feel this movie aimed to be anything more than a stylish cyberpunk action-romp. If there are any important themes here, they certainly went over my head, and I'm open to someone explaining them to me.

Beyond the feeling it tried to do too much in far too little time, I just didn't care about anything that happened.

But I can also see how it was tremendously influential, because through the whole movie I was like, "oh, there's Evangelion. oh, there's Berserk. oh, there's Elfen Lied. oh, there's Dragon Ball." So I can't be to critical for a movie that just didn't age well enough for me.

With the crux of my problems being that it seems far too condensed, I'll have to expect the manga is overwhelmingly superior. The setting and aesthetic are certainly in my preferences.

One of those arthouse movies that you don't get without paying attention to details and knowing more about history of Japan I guess. Reminded of both Evangelion and Elfen Lied.

To be honest , I've been on a bad terms with lots of too abstract things recently and would prefer some character-based journey with a storyline that is not supposed to be collected from multiple details and symbols.Even if I understand the symbolism , I don't enjoy it as much.

Good atmosphere , but my brain hurts + too much gore for my liking.

Akira was ok movie, It was not really that interesting.
Plot is mess, characters behaves unnaturally (same character problem in Katsuhiro Otomo's next work steam boy, but akira movie's character are more dull in my opinion), The conclusion is very vague ( i am not sure what to take from it).

Tetsuo behaves like a 5 year old bratty kid throwing tandrums with his bike obsession and inferiority complex. Kaneda is not really that better either with his plot armors. Also kaori was a fodder character which only existed so that tetsuo also have a girlfriend.
Only character I liked is kei. Other characters are not even worth mentioning.

Also one of the three Frankenstein kids, the one which is one the flying chair. Why the hell is his face color changing every 5sec??? (coloring is really bad)

All in all, It's not a bad movie, but really forgettable. I didnot get the appeal. I prefer Otomo's steam boy way way more better than this movie (both in terms of story and visuals)

Nearly fell asleep, seriously. Plot is so abysmally contrived and they try to make it seem profound by jamming politics, school, biker gangs, romance, friendship, science and some fucking aliens or some shit but in the end it just becomes convoluted nonnsense. It felt like i was watching ex-arm except the animation was good (for its time).

Definitely worth watching just so that you can pick a side in the Akira debate. It was a spectacle indeed! I loved the saturated colorings and the grit of the settings. The story was a bit non linear but had a nice "what do you think?" ending. I give it a 7/10 and would recommend it to any friend.

Akira was a fantastic film with a complex story that did an excellent job of conveying its message. The colonel, on the other hand, never lost his sense of duty despite the film's catastrophic finale and remains one of my favorite characters, along with Kaneda. Kaneda was still attempting to save Tetsuo from himself, despite all the destruction he had caused. It was one of the most emotional moments in the movie for me because we witnessed how vulnerable Tetsuo really was.

Awesome film!

This is what you call an eye-candy anime. The visuals are dope considering the time it was made in.

I came totally blind into this movie and boy I didn't expect to see so much gore from the very start.

They did the body horror and gore part so well that I actually felt repulsed and was taken aback in some instances.

I honestly didn't like the Akira power explanation. It doesn't really seem well explained and logical. No real reason for its awakening is given and its powers seem vague. It looks like a bunch of mish-mash of various psychic powers. Also, why do the children look like zombies and why did Tetsuo have such a major shift in his personality?

Ryu's death was a bit sad. He tried to carry out his duty until his last breath.

Tetsuo's transformation was so well detailed. It looked horrific and amazing at the same time. Poor Kaori got killed.

The ending was a bit off for me. It seemed weird and didn't seem to conclude the story properly. It was pretty vague. Or maybe I just didn't get it.

It felt like they tried packing in too much in a single movie. A lot of things remained unexplained too. I haven't read the manga but I wouldn't be surprised if they had to cut some manga stuff to fit it all in this movie.

Animation-wise, it's a fucking masterpiece. Story/plot-wise, it's kinda eh tbh. A pretty enjoyable watch though.

So the plop of goo psy wave guy self-destructs and the annoying simp and girl survives and yeah that's it. Akira is a big nope for me.

It was to no purpose, but a waste of time to have the government and anti government breaking bricks creating/eliminating "Akira" other than to push some kind of story.

As if to instill it was worth watching cause it had bike gang with bike tricks and fight from Jackie Chan kids, jails and lockups, and hanging it on the thread of still being an apocalypse now.

Leaving aside literally the universe apocalypse in the end cause the movie was just filler waiting for that to happen for a closing curtains grand finale.

Animation was good with alright action that's saving it from being a 1/10.

Rewatching Akira because why not (It's been almost 10 years)

Brilliant movie fused together with some amazing animation and art.

Ultimately in the end the knowledge and power became too much for Tetsuo, consuming himself.
As humans we're also not ready for this amount of power and knowledge, people will always act out of self interest as shown here.
Tetsuo and the kids left for a new universe one that probably transcends humanity.

The metaphors and the messages it delivered were done really well.

Don't you mean Kaneda wanted to help? Tetsuo got consumed by power but he was already resenting his relationship with Kaneda and he wasn't afraid to kill others when he stareted using his powers.

Watching Tetsuo reminded me of when I was watching the anime "From The New World" (ShinSekai Yori), with how the Ogre would show up and all the tension in the anime would just elevate.

Truly epic movie

This movie amazed me, at first few minutes I thought it was gonna be boring, but several minutes later the action, animation, and story are just incredible to watch. They have an amazinh cinematography, it's just fascinating. Characters development are also very good. I like how Tetsuo still fights, even though he doesn't have any power. And it's crazy the fact that they have to make 50 new color for this movie.

I finally got a round to watching it, and I think it's just OK. It looks fantastic for the 80s, but I couldn't wrap my head around the story. I do think that some of the themes have a lot of prevalence in today's society though.

There is the Akira: Shin anime coming out at some point though, so maybe it will expand on some of the things I'm confused about.
