why am I even bothering with a guy that gives this trash and Death Note a 10 and Monster a 1?

A pleasant surprise, I must admit. I didn't give it a 9 only because I found the ending to be a tad predictable, for me, cause I had already figured out who John Walker was, since the very first episodes, but overall I definitely enjoyed the show.

Well, I randomly decided to marathon this today.

It definitely was interesting, had nice ideas and the 2 MC + Fukuda were good characters. However, I didn't care for most of the other characters, the production was... pretty fucking average, the villain was meh and the finale was just alright. Also, it took a while before I really got in the mood and get really interested.

Idk, I'm struggling to choose between a 6 and 7.

EDIT: yeah, I'll go with a 6/10 but pretty close to a 7.

So it ended with John Walker being permanently captive in a world where he has to atone for his sins. It happened so suddenly though; almost felt anticlimatic lol

Looks like things went back to normal in the real world too thanks to Momoki.

Awesome end to this series. Everything sorta resolved itself and there wasn't too much that went unanswered. The animation was spectacular, the soundtrack as well, the story didn't lay out the answers in front of our faces unlike certain softened mystery-esque shows do. Overall I'm pretty happy with this.

Think this anime was slightly overrated imo. Don't get how people are gving it 8/9's.

Didn't quite like the shift from sci-fi to supernatural at the end. Kinda all felt a bit unbelievable and it's not often I feel that way.
Like you got Wells, and the Wells are the unconscious minds of serial killers, and then this girl who is real (?), is the embodiment of these Wells, and then she puts them to sleep when she wakes up, but she's also dying over and over by serial killers in her dream? And the mastermind is able to jump through Wells through her? And has a God complex for some reason? Like seriously? Am I missing something or is there a hell of a lot of info and explanation being left out here?

I never really came round to the female protag either. I don't know if the animation had something to do with it, but she just seemed so bland. Even when she put her head into the drill for some reason I still wasn't all that interested in her. Even after watching it all, all I really feel towards her is that she was really clever and committed to her job. The way she viewed the world which the hole in her head was pretty interesting but that was about it.

In contrast Fukuda becomes really likeable and interesting. I would have liked to have found out more about him.

The main character was developed pretty well though and I enjoyed watching him work. The bit with his fam made me cry a lil' bit.

At most a 7/10 for me.

It's a 7/10 for me, which is to say it was good and I'm glad I watched it, largely enjoyable and interesting, etc., but not a stand out, due to a few points.

The premise has the potential to easily be an 8/10 or even 9/10+ since I love dream science, worlds within worlds, and theories surrounding consciousness, as well as Sci-Fi thrillers in general, but there were a few things which I believe were lacking in the execution:

1) The animation which many complained about and find subpar is probably below average, but I actually don't care about that that much and it didn't bother me. Yet I'm not a fan of the overall art style and don't think it serves this anime the best. Preferably it would have been a little more realistic and less stylized in certain areas. I don't like some of the character designs and especially the main character (Narihisago).

2) I liked Hondomachi and Narihisago, but the rest of the cast at Kura HQ was a little bland/underdeveloped like standard police personnel in police procedural shows. I actually enjoyed the minor interactions we saw between them, but it wasn't enough. Due to the length of the anime and amount of plot and ideas they had to pack in, characterization as a whole (even for Narihisago and Hondomachi - just not as egregiously with them) consequently suffered and was too thin and spotty.

3) Too short and fast-paced for such an ambitious plot. A lot of folks complained over the exposition. I actually love dialogue-heavy series and thought the dialogue in this was pretty solid, but it and the whole scope of the plot would be better served spread over a two cour show at the minimum.

4) And I think this one is the most irksome and least forgivable: John Walker's non-existent motivation as a man, a villain, and a character. He proclaimed something to the effect of "Having his own sense of justice" and that he had stopped or put away in prison more serial killers than he had created, but if that's true then it must mean he considers serial killers to be bad/immoral/a negative thing/worthy of death or imprisonment. So why create more of them in the first place? Explaining it away with a god complex was not satisfactory and seemed to be creating an "evil for the sake of evil" black and white, too simplistic type villain, which I did not appreciate. Again, going to rushed or thin characterization. Either a deeper motivation and rationale on his part was non-existent or the explanation for it in-universe in the show was.

These are actually some pretty egregious problems when I reason it out and look back over what I myself wrote, but I'm still giving it a 7/10, because I overall enjoyed watching it, I love near future/alternate future dystopic Sci-Fi and plots based around the mind/dreams/consciousness as said. And just the whole concept and aesthetic around the Mizuhanome. I initially thought it was going to be more philosophical, but found it rather light/lacking on the philosophical side, though I respect that I think it aimed to veer more into the psychological component of human motivations than philosophical or ideological.

It most reminds me of Paprika, Inception, and Minority Report. I don't think it's of the caliber of a film like Inception though as some have hyped it (that's one of the best films in the modern era and one of the only mainstream Western films of the past 10 years I actually love unreservedly). Also to a lesser extent Ghost in the Shell just in the sense of having a futuristic police unit with advanced tech gear respond to radical crimes with radical, controversial, and experimental technology and dealing with the brain. But I don't think it's nearly as tight as something like GitS either. Paprika seems the most apt comparison in that at points (in this case, by the end) it veers more into the realm of science fantasy (or "supernatural Sci-Fi") and also has some of the same pacing and characterization issues.

In the end, I just wish shows like this that have an inherently deeply fascinating premise with endless potential could be made as they would in the 90s or early 2000 to mid 2000s with more willingness to have a long run and large number of episodes to really flesh them out.

I thought this was a great series up until Hayaseura was declared to be John Walker. It did well enough up to that point, with a bit of supernatural, scifi, mystery, and drama all mixed in. I thought there were some especially poignant scenes, such as where Akihito screamed at his wife and daughter in the id-within-id about how they were the ones who're leaving him, after initially trying to deny that he was living in an id-within-id when confronted by Koharu. But I felt like the series stretched itself too thin on several fronts after the credits rolled. For one, it's told a number of good, interesting stories but I felt like barely dove in on any of them, except Akihito's. Same thing with the number of themes it tried to squeeze in, a lot of which are worth exploring. I admit it was pretty impressive just how much content/subplot they managed to fit into 13 episodes. But in the end most things felt sort of rushed, including the whitewashing of Fukuda and the reasons behind why Hayaseura felt like he had to do what he did to accomplish his goals. And I would've liked to see a bit more time spent on the resolution--for instance, more time between Asuka/Kaeru and Akihito, and more time for Akihito to (finally) accept the passing of his family. Some gleam of hope for there to be a "purpose" in all that everyone went through.

Don't get me wrong. This was still a quality series and I enjoyed binging through it. I just wish it was more of a complete piece of work.

Nahirisago was about to jump him so instead of choosing he just went for him.
I enjoyed the serie but i didn't like where it went.

Amazing detective anime. Low-tier animation and some plotholes here and there but didn't find it that bad seeing how complex everything was and how they only got 13 episodes to show this incredible story. Kinda was disappointed with the John walker as I expected a mastermind who wasn't so obvious to the viewer but Hayaseura was still a pretty good villain. Still it was very interesting to see the brilliant detectives at work.

A good ending.

That opening sequence with the music was awesome. The second time I've really noticed the music of this show (after last episode's montage). So John Walker has come to an end, due to the brilliant work of Narihisago and Hondoumachi. I think they made a very good team. I like their banter too.

But for me the highlight of this episode was definitely Momoki and Asukai. Asukai's situation is just horrifying. I can't imagine how much mental suffering she goes through in her dreams. And no one, especially the good guys, can bear killing her.

What Momoki said to Asukai was great, that someone will come and save her, someone who definitely can. And he asks her to hang in there, to believe in that. And she believes him. Despite only being introduced late in the series, I really like the relationship between Momoki and Asukai. Also feels like there's something between them. If one day the suffering ends for Asukai, wouldn't be surprised if they got together.

Also really like Asukai's suit. Cool design.

And in the end, Narihisago has accepted the death of his family and can move on.

So I guess the ones who died in their dreams really can't wake up yet. I honestly have hopes for a season 2 where they can finish things off properly: an end to Asukai's suffering and bringing back to consciousness their comrades who are still in comas. But I know the chances aren't that high.

I wasn't able to finish this during the season it aired, but I do know that this show was definitely underrated. I barely heard about it. I wish more people would watch this show. It's not perfect, but it is a very good show that I thoroughly enjoyed and explored some interesting concepts. 8/10, hoping to see more.

I think the show was overrated - it started with interesting ideas, but there weren't any plot twists or mysteries solved or something to keep me glued so I can't stop watching until I see it all.

The only reason I managed to finish this show is because I had a few packs of roasted, salted sunflower seeds that I was eating while watching, if it weren't for them, I wouldn't bother watching this.

After finishing it, in retrospect, I regret watching it.

Solid show, it wasn't a masterpiece as there could have been more they could have done, a few more episodes would have really helped. But i'd still give it a 9/10 as I really enjoyed the show and it's characters (I'll miss Fukuda). And it also had very interesting themes and plot with great execution.

I really hope we get a season 2 since there is still more they could do past the John Walker case.

This show turned out my sceptical thing into loving it so much. Great job by bringin that hype, until the last seconds of its duration.

That old man execution was so nice. I don't even knowing in the first place that shit might happened. Hondomachi, once again, turned down all my hating into loving that character much. Yep, she was perfect with the role of the brilliant detective, together with Narihisago! Also, RIP a maniac with a hole in the head. At least his contribution un the last attempt really served as a great honor. Great decision to acted better than your status before!

Then, with the final boss. I hope he just received a fair share punishment from that world! Took that shit, bastard old man! Idk how he felt there. Surely he must received the real punishment on that world of Ido-well within an Ido-well. Lmao. What a twist to solved the case of that crazy bastard old man!

Also, with Kaeru-chan a.k.a Kiki status, the saddest part on the last scene, beside the confirmed death of the head hole buddy. She still locked down on that system called Mizuhanome. Atleast she had a great moment by meeting again with Momoka Director. His promises still intrigueing, tho. Until when? Only the author that can resolved her complex problem, without even killed her. Can i call that as a new season hint? I hope it is. Because, yeah, it still have something to wrapped up with this current issued, relating the mystery of Mizuhanome's power.

10/10 for this one. The increasing level of satisfaction from the beginning until this point really served as a valid reason for me. Its not just the story. Their characters, especially Hondomachi. Their characterization, i am crying. And everything just suited well into this amazing final episode. I may be too exaggerating. But, yeah, thats my biased decision. No other doubt for me. No needed any long ass explanations. A masterpiece praising from me. Thats it.

While I can't say I'm thrilled with the sudden shift into teamwork and meta fantasy-like elements at the end, the lead up to the twist and Akihito's overall character development make it a solid enough series worth checking out.

The show could have been way better. It has good production values. And solid animation throughout.

The biggest problem with the show is that it tries too hard to be smart when it’s not. It presents itself as a serious “case solving detective show“ when it’s really not even close to that. The concept and ideas were interesting but they never really took it any further than surface level fluff. The way cases were solved and deduction were way too fantastical and convenient. And sometimes did not even make sense. You really have to turn off your brain. I know it’s a sci-fi but some of the elements of the show become very artificial and hokey. You really have to suspend your disbelief.

And for a “mystery anime”, the plot become almost too predictable by the end. John Walker reveal felt completely flat.

7.5/10. Best scene by far is Narihisago family flashback in episode 10. That one hit. Got my eyes wet.

So many complicated emotions...

They beat a villain by psychoanalyzing him...
Kiki was once again pushed into eternal suffering...
Tamotsu died...
and some rando became the acting chief for some reason...

I want to rate this 4 just for the finale but I also can't deny how much enjoyment some episodes brought me so I guess 6 is fine
Things definitely could be done differently, art was pretty low tier and music was super on nose so I really can't rate this more than 7

Rewatch has ended and unlike the past few rewatches I've done where I've appreciated the show more than I did originally, whether its minor or major improvements, my feelings for the show are pretty much the exact same for this one. I love mystery shows when done well but sadly, this wasn't one of them. And the finale was super rushed too to just add more salt to the wound. It had a couple parts about it which I liked but ultimately, felt too amateurish early on and convoluted and stupid near the end except some of the flashbacks involving Narihisago and his family from the past adding just a bit of characterization there. 3/10 overall then and now.

Well shit I was lost like half the time yet it still kept me completely captivated throughout. What a wild ride that was. Watched this in one sitting because nothing could stop me from watching the next episode. What a great lead character we had. The ID wells were insane. On both the narrative and technical levels, this anime excels.

While I didn't mind the ending however, I wasn't completely sold on it. Gets kind of comical imo. The reveal is like "WHEEEEE it was MEEE the whole time! Try and catch me now hehehehe!" And maybe it's wrong of me to ask for a darker ending when the characters have already been through so much messed up shit, but imo the ending is just kind of too happy go lucky for an anime with this tone. I mean I'm fine with it all, I just kind of wish that the ending would make you reflect back on it all, rather than our detectives basically riding off into the sunset. Like in Kaeru's case, I like what they did with her. Her issue was not resolved, she is still a prisoner, but at least she got to feel the presence of a person who cared for her in that of Momoki. Maybe I don't want a dark ending actually, but something a bit more bittersweet. But that's just me. The way this ended was completely fine.

Actually you know what screw all that, this ending is good. Far be it from me to not wish for any happiness for this man. Yes John Walker was kind of a comical character but at least Akihito found some kind of closure for his family in taking the bitch down. The man lost his wife and daughter in some of the most horrifying ways possible. The man deserves closure. So yeah, good ending, disregard the above paragraph unless you're somehow curious of my train of thought.

8/10. Rather amazing; the highest praise I can give this anime is that while watching it, I did not feel like an anime at all.

3/5 very duce ex machina and contrived for my taste. Ah ha we got you with a convenient convenient plot device! how convenient. Lots of exposition that tries to make logic of poor writing. Well at least the author actually tried to make something original- however they tried too hard to make it "smart" while in the end the plot is incredible straight forward. It would have been nice if the main villain actually had a real motive rather than "I have a god complex and blah blah blah #crazy".

Now I remember why I didnt watch this show sooner, I had heard it kinda falls apart in the end and that put me off.

While I wouldnt say it is bad, the ending was certainly the weakest point. The Kiki subplot was super edgy, did we really need the coma inducing threat to the world? Couldnt it have ended with them rescuing Kiki? Why is Momoki acting as if he was super close to her, he spoke with her maybe once. Narihisago got all the time with her and while that was relevant for one scene, it was one throwaway scene only. She continues to die in the dreams to operate the machine, whats the point. It doesnt even seem as if they can visit her in the dreams via the machine, she is always dead already. I had hope there would be atleast more than that based on Narihisago meeting her alive that one time.

It seems they actually did what John Walker wanted them too, they continued operations, which kinda proves his point? Thats kinda lame for an underdeveloped main villain.

Narihisagos flashback was also not brought up again, maybe Im misinterpreting it but it seems his daughter just died somehow and his wife killed herself. Like the dream of Kiki he had before. So there was no point to that either.

I just feel like either they should have delved more into that mystery and use the potential of the MC as a twisted formerly good guy gone bad, or they should have just sticked with a detective mystery plot without all that fantasy powers around Kiki.

We also got zero backstory for how and why the scientist developed the machine in the first place and why the Chief acted like he did.
Momoki claims to have been looking into Kikis case, yet her disappearing must have happened before the machine and thus his job at Kura were created. This leaves a huge logic gap.
My headcanon explanation would be that the interactions Narihisago had with Kiki were actually Momokis in reality and he only took his place because the dream obviously deviated from reality. But it was never Momokis well since he wasnt actually a murderer, so eh?

I really loved the story all the way up to ep10, then it became a bit messy and convoluted.
Having a big cast actively involved in the cases mystery gives the authors the ability to pursue multiple lines of thought and potentially give us viewers hints or mislead us without making it obvious or convoluted, I really liked that take on a detective story.
Animation and OST were good. I also have to say Narihisagos backstory around his wife and daughter didnt leave me untouched. I never managed to view him as a bad guy like the main cast did early on. Dude killed a serial killer who brutally murdered his wife and daughter and then he drove serial killers into suicide by telling them the world is better off without them. That isnt wrong. They are serial killers. Dude is a chad.
Likewise the Kiki subplot was emotional and had potential, but it was kinda wasted.

7/10 The detective story is very good and would work well as any medium, dare I say the "anime" tropes are actually its biggest downsides at the end.
"This emotion is mine alone.
It is for Madoka alone." - Homura

Alright ending, nothing special but nothing stupid at the same time
I think this show also fell into the usual trap of creating creative premise and world concept with somewhat of a story then forgetting about anything else

the main plot weakness is their shallow and bland writing of the antagonist aka John Walker
they stalled for almost 12 episodes to reveal who he was and it was disappointingly the one who everybody expected
and then poorly written lines were thrown out there about his mindset and ideology with no logic, reason or even meaning behind it
only to conclude it with the un-resolving of what started this whole mess -which they didn't put too great emphasis on anyway-

Anyway, I think this is the limit for an original anime and it was fun but not to the end as usual

Was an okay watch, the first half got me hooked, but the way how they revealed that the chief was John walker, felt very very underwhelming. There were a lot of info dumping and yet no actual consistent path on finding out about him.

And I finished this, dang I still wanna see more. One of the most underrated anime for sure , the story is very brilliantly written where the story has a deep complex meaning behind it. I liked my journey of watching it

9/10 , definitely needs a sequel to see if Kaeru will ever be saved

I think I’m dumb, so I didn’t really understand anything in this anime. Everything about its ideas and terms confused the hell out of me. I wanted to enjoy it like others but I just could not, shame because it seemed like it was good. Would only give it 5/10 because the music was banging.
