That was an absolute blast. Can't wait for more Ikuhara craziness.

Also did anyone else notice the guy with his head in a box being interrogated in the police station earlier in the episode? With that and all the boxes which were stacked up inside the station my guess would be that the two policemen are involved in creating the zombies and stealing the boxes.
They are, in fact I think this show will frame the policeman as the enemy of the kappas.

Not really, I watched it the first time and I get the general idea, but rewatching definitely add something and I keep noticing more details. Also this show just looks gorgeous how can I not rewatch it 20 times?

Don't get why some people like senseless, "original" and weird stuff just for the sake of it. Soooo good to see guys having multiple anal penetrations…………………………… really.
It's called good just because it's Ikuhara, if it were not everybody would say that it's TRASH.
Tries to be deep but fails, the only good thing is animation and that's it.

Errr. nope, that's just rewatch value. The show is writted in a way that you have to pay attention because the thing is about you trying to solve the puzzle.

You get details that you don't realize at the beginning, but then you start to understand it when you give it a rewatch.

It is something like what happens in the Visual Novel Umineko, the novel never give you the complete solution of the puzzle, but gives you clues about what really happened. Once you realize by reasoning what happens and you re-read the novel, then you begin to notice things that you had ignored.
In that moment it becomes a totally new experience.

Well Kappa's anal penetration is not an Ikuhara thing:

According to Japanese folklore, the human soul exists as a small hardened magical ball within the anus known as 'shirikodama' (尻子玉 - literally 'small anus ball').
Tales tell of lake-dwelling monsters known as 'kappa' who try to kill you by 'extracting' your shirikodama if you dare venture into their lake.

Not true. I watched Ikuhara's projects in the past and I didn't like them very much. I wanted it to be my cup of tea, but I didn't go in with the expectation of it being my cup of tea. So it ended up being pretty surprising to me that I enjoyed the first episode of Sarazanmai. I am not a big fan of terms like "deep" since I don't think anything is all that deep. Either it catches my interest or it doesn't. And I found this first episode to be very entertaining, humorous, it looked slick, and I liked how it is taking from kappa mythology to tell this story about these individual secrets that people hold dear to themselves. Whether or not it will fully deliver, of course, remains to be seen.

However I just felt like I had to comment since I want to make clear that while branding can definitely help people know about a show and want to watch it, if the program itself doesn't catch someone's interest, it doesn't catch someone's interest. And I think it's a bit impolite to suggest that people are lying to themselves or being dishonest with themselves just because they don't want to admit that someone they liked made something they don't legitimately think is good. I think folks who are fans of Ikuhara's stuff know what to expect from his shows, so if Sarazanmai is more of the same, then of course those same people will be interested. Maybe some who are fans will be alienated, and maybe some who aren't fans (such as myself) will end up enjoying it. That's always how it works out with things. Nobody is capable of pleasing everybody, nor is the goal with every project necessarily to cast the widest net (this is especially true in anime where a lot of it is about appealing to niche demographics).

I definitely didn't need to watch it 5 times to understand it, like I said, the first time I watched it I get the general idea. You sound like you know everything while we as a long Ikuhara fan keep brainstorming all this time to decrypt everything. If you understand everything, why not show me?

Chill dude, I don't care enough to 'understand' it until it grabs my interest, which the first episode didn't.

And like I said, I was just poking fun at the way you phrased it, I didn't mean to say that you didn't get it.

Wonder if the main character is trans or just enjoys crossdressing. Not sure how Ikuhara wants to tackle that.

Anyway... definitely going to be a series heavy on the gay sex metaphors.

The main character clearly gave a reason for why he cross dresses. He doesn’t do it for his own enjoyment and was clearly ashamed of it. The episode revealed that his secret is that he cross dresses for his little brother who likes the idol Sara, as in he impersonates her for that reason and sends the pictures to him. He, as far as we know right now, is not trans. Being a cross dresser and transgender are two things that should not be conflated,

umm, I think it is easier to understand this episode compared to Penguindrum's first episode. In Penguindrum, some important information was hidden for the suspense of the story. In this episode, the meaning or theme of most items like box, anus, Amazon, kappa, and otter was already explained or shown. Plus, the core narrative is so similar to Penguindrum. I think Ikuhara fans don't have difficulty deciphering it. Even the same cross-cutting trick from Yuri Kuma Arashi was re-used, but it was solved in one episode. That fact shows that Ikuhara is apparently trying to make it less-confusing.

No, he's not the one receiving it. The boy at the very last scene bfore the ending song, who is Kazuki's sibling, is the one who receives the pictures as you can see he says "Goodnight, Sara-chan".

This episode only reveals Kazuki's secret of what's in his box. Next ep will probably be about the gun in Kuji's box and the 3rd ep will probably be Enta's secret which is pretty obviously being his crush on Kazuki.

ooh, I see. I just noticed I didn't understand what was going on at that scene, I thought the three of them were sharing their secrets at the same time. I guess I shouldn't watch it when I'm sleepy.

Btw, is Ikuhara's symbolism hard to follow overall? I thought it was pretty blatant in this first episode, but I watched about five episodes of Penguindrum (I have to finish it eventually) and didn't really detect anything very relevant to the narrative apart from what was blatantly shown (like the episode with the Prince/Princess story that was pretty boring). Visual symbolism is something that always flies over my head in anime so I've been avoiding him up to now, and it seems like it's essential for enjoying his shows.

That depends on how much context you share with Ikuhara.
"Imagine", metro, 95, underwater, etc. They have a clear message to us modern audience, not a metaphor for the sake of it. However, not everyone knows about the socialistic discourses on Kobe earthquake, Kobe child murders, Aum's attack on mtero, etc. Ikuhara probably doesn't expect everyone to understand them. Haruki Murakami fans would be less than 10% of the anime fans.
I saw a full series review on Penguindrum by a pro manga creator. In episode 1, he immediately said that it is the very important issue that people tried to ignore in the 90s. Penguindrum gives a pretty different impression to some people like that.
I think Panguindrum is still an enjoyable show even without those backdrops, but the early part is a bit too slow. I guess that the slow pacing, not the symbolism itself, is bothering you now. Utena had that problem too.

...yes, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, but it sounds like the kind of thing I definitely should read about. I didn't even take any meaning from Imagine, I thought the lyrics might have some other meaning but for me, they sounded totally random. Is there any in-depth analysis of Penguindrum, Ikuhara and all the things you said that you recommend? Either text or video. I'll keep it in mind after I finish it. If you can, send me that full series review you mentioned too. There's also Night on the Galactic Railroad, I have to watch that movie before trying to tackle it again.

Also, I had no idea Murakami had anything to do with him. I have several of his books on my to-read list. I found an article on Crunchyroll mentioning he was influenced by a Murakami's book on the metro attack you mentioned, is that it? It does make sense for him to have influenced Ikuhara.

It's not the slow pace itself, I actually like slow shows, it's just that the anime wasn't doing much for me. The episode I mentioned was especially boring because I felt like he was hammering my head with Ringo's princess fantasy.
Thanks for your input, I think it might be better for me to read about it a little before delving into the show. I actually want to understand the full context behind the show and Ikuhara's works overall, so I'll certainly come back to it eventually.

Hahahahah, I KNEW Mal would give this low rating despite the presentation and story is so refreshing and unique. People of Mal just can't accept something different.

This is a weird show, but weird in a good way because there are meaning behind each of the scenes. This show is like Monogatari series with very unique presentation, making you think the plot is chaotic and doesn't make sense, but reveal something within in the end.

To me this anime is a purest form of art, and this unique animation and presentation further enhance it.
Also do I have to mention the animation quality/ frame/ presentation is on par with movie theatre anime level of quality, which is shocking to me?

I'm well aware most Mal watchers wouldn't accept this type of stuffs and think this "artwork" is some sort of trash, but I'd definitely keep watching.
It's my #2 show of this season atm. (#1 being Carole and Tuesday ofc)

oh dude, even if an anime produced by a single studio, it's very VERY rare to find same directors/storyboarders and animators work in every episode

the most important thing is, it's not different MAIN staff and director (you can also check all main staff in both Mappa and Lapintrack web)
it's true that we are wrong if just praise Mappa for this "crazy" ideas, because it's more for that talented individuals behind it
IMO I think the thing for praised Mappa in this first episode was that fluid animation? Lapintrack only has 7 employees including non animator staff (http://lapintrack.com/about.html) and as we can see in ED credits, there are 30+ people do key animation and 2nd key animation here (don't forget there also in betweeners and other)
they also still give credit for Mappa in that ED for "Animation production"
It may handled by different staff in every episode (just like other anime) but we still have that MAIN STAFF, I doubt Ikuhara didn't check the storyboards too

This anime is like being on drugs. I fucking love it.

I fucking love the crossdressing kappa hero and his equally fucked up friends.

It's so beautiful with all the colors and the animation is pretty good. This was an unexpected surprise.

Very good guess, that'll definitely be one of the themes. Desires doesn't only refer to sexuality though, but homosexuality will be touched upon since the two cops are gay and I think there'll be a love triangle between the three boys (Enta definitely likes Kazuki).

I can see that it's also about how social media helps us both connect and isolate us from others, and the modern consumerism society that likes to "package" things which is seen in the Kappazon brand everywhere.

And here I was wondering if Ikuhara was always going to stick to lesbians exclusively.
This is the most excited I've been over a show all year so far. And in a season this devoid of originality, this show shines even brighter.
The topic of connection, and what you're willing to hide ot pretend to acquire or maintain them, even though that will take a part of what makes you who you are has a lot of potential as well.
All of the female characters of this show appear "out of reach" in one way or another as well. I wonder if that is a comment on how pursuing a relationship with a woman is "out of reach" if you're gay, too, and you have to pretend to be something you're not?
Or maybe that's just episode one. (Plus I really don't think the little girl we saw will be romantically pursued).

In any case, I'm so glad it's here and I'll probably rewatch each episode a lot.
There is nothing terribly wrong with feeling lost, so long as that feeling precedes some plan on your part to actually do something about it. Too often a person grows complacent with their disillusionment, wearing their discomfort like a favorite shirt - Johnny C.
