Also, I noticed Dororo calls Hyakkimaru "Aniki", which, correct me if I'm wrong, means a form of "big brother". But I notice they translate it different ways like he's just saying "hey", "you", or "Hyakkimaru". Is this accurate, or are they taking too many liberties with the translation?

No it's not accurate, it only means "big brother". The lengths they went to in order not to translate that word properly was certainly impressive in its own way.

Great episode, btw.

@praisethevillain
we dont have a proper translation for aniki in English(not that i know of), its means "Big brother" in Japaneses but its different from"nii-san" etc
its referring to a senior person or a leader that u like alot(something like father in mafia), more like "Bro" but with more respect.
i think using his name instead of "big brother" is better or maybe using the word "aniki" without translation
even translating some thing like (nee-san, nii-san) is a problem, when a Japanese person call her/his brother-sister "ne-san ,ni-san" its normal! but in English its weird cuz ppl don't call their sibling by their position in eng they usually use their name. its really rare to see someone say "hey brother come over here" , the vibe changes in eng!

What an ending! Can't wait for the next episode.

I thought it was pretty clear what Mio was doing but was surprised to see it shown explicitly. I don't remember that happening in the manga.

They didn't have to build up Mio's profession like that. It was pretty obvious. She works for the army, at night. This isn't modern times.

If you couldn't guess it at first they really tried to hammer hints into your face with her fixing her robe about 3 times as Hyakkimaru is staring at her, then another time when she learns that he can see the color of your soul.

Mio's voice actor sounds really familiar, but I can't draw any names. Take a guess anybody?

Sucks when you actually guess right about something that you don't want to happen. When the kid says she only works at night, first thing that to mind was selling herself. The part where she was trying to cover herself up when Dororo said he could see the color of her soul only added more to it.

pretty true man :c but actually didn't know that about mio at first, i can't stand it those scenes, if i watch a hentai i think i will die :c but Hyakkimaru's development at least is going great i love him.

Oh look, a giant Fearow...Hyakkimaru isn't used to fighting with sound. He's going to need to learn quick...

I wonder...now that Hyakkimaru can hear, does he understand words?

Is that Nana Mizuki I hear?! Welp, I know where my best girl bias is going to go to now this season...

Lol, Hyakkimaru was reaching for Mio probably because her voice soothes him. But when he hears Dororo talk, Hyakkimaru immediately covers his ears lol. WAAAAAIT....Is Hyakkimaru going to get his voice next!? And the first thing that he will recite is Mio's song?

Oh dear...don't tell me that Mio is a prostitute...The way she tries to cover herself and the fact that she works at night is a telltale sign...

Crazy Antlion demon...

I KNEW IT! Damn it King Records! You're doing it again!

Crap...Hyakkimaru lost a leg. Unless he's got super demon powers, he's not getting that back unless he gets another prosthetic leg...

You arent quite right, don't be so quick to bag the translators, they are correct. The most accurate translation is something along the lines of "bro" - its a formal way of addressing both your older brother, as well as your male friends or close acquaintences. The translators probably chose not to use the word "bro" because for english speakers it sounds unnatural in a historical setting (imagine a pair of knights using that to address one another), but in asian countries (Japan and China as far as I know, maybe others too) this way of address has been around for a while.

Yeah, the first thing that came to my mind was Rob Roy movie with Liam Neeson, there was literally the exct same scene.

That scene is probably a reference to Tsuge Yoshiharu's Akai Hana cuz the girl literally said "akai hana" in the song.

(The song itself is a 70's popular song)

Such a good episode! Too bad we're left hanging, but one can only expect the next one to follow suit~

The pacing was much better than until now. The tension was also well-built on both sides (Hyakki and Mio), up to the moment he regained his voice.

Hyakkimaru with voice is gonna be a little weird, though. It was kinda cute when he was only mouthing screams and all :'3

I knew it was coming, but still it hurts to see Mio doin all that to survive. Shows like these portraying the evils of war really breaks my heart. Rainbow did it painfully well and now this show does it in a heavy heart.

Well fuck ...

Plus side - we finally get to hear his voice <3 Down side, well .. pretty much everything else T_T

It was obvious Mio was a prostitue, the first time they saw her she was washing herself in the river. I can't say I like the "angelic girl selling herself to protect the younglings out of sheer selflessness" trope, it just doesn't stick with me. I'd prefer it if she actually had a personality, like if she were weary and suspicious of strangers and maybe a little rough around the edges, cause, hey, that would match her circumstances. I mean, you can stil be a self-sacrificing heroine, even if you're not a pretty little flower petal.

I know it's probably like that in the source material and I'm just ranting, but it's a pet peeve of mine. Don't like this kind of meek, flat character, especially if they're female. You know the ones that are there just to kinda keep the plot going and serve as potential love interests? Oh, well, maybe she'll evolve during the course of the show. I know I'm probably nitpicking, I'm sorry, I guess it just got on my nerves xD She's not that bad, I like the interactions with Hyakkimaru, the singing .. That's cute, I admit. I just think it would be more poignant if she weren't an impeccable heavenly creature without a shred of malice within her -.-

Still adore the show, tho !!
To be fair, she actually shows her "rough around the edges" personality in the scene where she asked the soldiers for work. Her entire tone changed and her expression became dark, and you could even tell her pose became a little more seductive. That scene always weirded me out in the PVs because it seemed so off from her usual portrayals, so seeing it in the proper context made it make sense to me.

However I do understand where you're coming from regarding her character though. She has a bit of that pure anime maiden vibe going for her that usually serves as the male's love interest. It doesn't help that she's probably going to get fridged by the end of the next episode (I'm assuming this due to the way the OP shows her) so she feels like a stock character just there to give the male development. But the original manga is really old and while they made some changes, it's still following the general formula of the original. Olden shows tend to have more typical tropes, since they are the pioneers of them. I'm slightly lenient regarding that personally.

In terms of the ship itself I honestly can't say I ship it either, the dynamic isn't really my style LOL. But from a storytelling perspective I understand she's there to show him opening up to his emotions. One thing I really appreciate is that they didn't give him eyes before he "fell in love" with her (they haven't really gotten to that stage but I know she's the love interest in the original) and despite her feeling "dirty" from her job he still knows she's a good person at heart just from looking at her aura. They only needed voice and touch to really form a connection. Story wise I appreciate it. (Just not shipping wise. I'm the same as you and prefer tougher female characters.)

- Guess I'm the only anime-only fan that thought Mio in the OP was Dororo's grown version (and somehow speculating Hyakkimaru would not age due to his abnormal situation)
- Very sad story of Mio, not sure if she could stay long since she only has a few cameos in the OP but not ED
-Great progress of Hyakkimaru becoming a human: gaining sense of hearing, expression, voice and sense of pain. Character development as he insists to fight for a better home for Mio and the children, despite his wounds.
This "humanizing" progress reminds me of Katanagatari, which the protagonist also slowly develops from a "weapon" to a full human being throughout the story.

-Side note: Deepest sympathy to Dororo: Hyakkimaru covering his ear upon hearing her voice just after Mio left despite all the care Dororo has done in the episodes up to date.

She is working. Ever heard of prostitutes? Holding her down has got nothing with that? Maybe they just like that position. But you can cry about rape in twitter if you want to.

I don't have twitter. I just thought, as the kids said, that that other side of the war is know for being more "rough" and THIS time maybe things have gonne a little wrong. Which sitll possible, they may think she is spy from the other camp. Its obvious she was a sex worker since the moment she was washing her crotch in the river. I just thought that 3x1 was a weird special offer, and maybe there is something else. I think the death flag on her is giant.

Mio's character is quite generic, it was obvious she was a prostitute, but thanks to her Hyakkimaru was able to feel beauty for the first time through her song. Seeing his hard emotionless face relax as he finally gets something to enjoy was soothing.

I get the feeling his leg will grow back, but even if it doesn't it's not like he isn't used to a wooden leg. At least regaigning his voice shouldn't make him weaker like pain or hearing did, but then again, every step towards humanity will push him away from his demonic strenght.

Also Mio's death flag is pretty fucking huge.

I thought the girl on the opening was gonna be someone from Hyakimaru's past. Guess I was wrong.
Working on both sides of the war is definetely gonna get her killed. Someone's gonna accuse her of being a spy, and legless Hyakimaru will be powerless to defend her. Very sad.

oh my god.. How did I not notice that she was selling her body when he said she only works at night. That ending was shocking. Hyakkimaru got his voice back. I love that this is not just about Dororo and Hyakkimaru, but we also get introduced to other interesting characters on the adventure and learn their stories. This low-key gives me a little mushishi vibe even though the concept is really different. It also looks like his Father the King is getting hit with streaks of misfortune as the demons are dying 1 by 1.

Super strong episode.

Love it.

Hyakkimaru's scream broke my heart..this anime is gruesome..
Poor Mio..
Well, from the moment she was washing herself in that position I expected something, the way she walks too she was not walking straight, the way she felt uncomfortable when dororo said hyakkimaru can see human souls and started covering herself.
War is war,she took the job because she can't take care of the children without it.
At this rate I don't want Hyakkimaru to have his organs back, when he got his nerves he started feeling pain ,when he started hearing he injured hisself, when he got his leg back it was eaten..
If he got his vision back he won't know the bad souls anymore

She is much more likely to die from stds than getting pregnant. Antibiotics didn't exist back then after all. Not to mention, life expectancy for poor people was much shorter back then and with famines and diseases during war time it's a miracle to pass 30.

Well it's not that big of deal, but the way Dororo uses "aniki" is similar to in a more modern setting, the way gang members call their mentors. Even if "big bro" or something similar isn't entirely the same, it conveys respect or admiration just like "aniki" does, seeing how Kyakkimaru isn't Dororo's actual brother and he just started calling him that out of his own volition. The other translations they used mean basically nothing, while "big bro" would at least carry some of the meaning of the original expression.

Exactly my question... Though remember in episode 2 hen he understood that Dororo wanted to know his name? Thus he wrote it in the the ground. Maybe he has some talent to understand? Or there was some method that Jukai taught him though we don't know how... Because when he told him that "Hyakkimaru" was his name he understood that. xD

That's probably the case. I'm guessing Jukai taught him somehow or that's just part of his special abilities. Perhaps we will find out in the next episode when he speaks?
