This ending is disappointing, cause it works in 3 ways:

1) It's all a dream, by Sengoku's mom. Problem? It's a fucking sick dream! At some point in the series the girls where pretty close to getting raped, several people died (brutally) and Sengoku's life was in constant danger. Pretty bad dream to have about your son and his friends

2) It was all in the future! This seems possible because the island wasn't made untill years after the crash. Problem with this is that we have no fucking clue how they got there.

3) They were clones like the dinosaurs! Clones with clothes and memories! Who were placed on the plane by people who wasn't on the island for reasons beyond bullshit!

In conclusion: None of the 3 possible explanations make any sense whatsoever.

happy ending for the characters, bad ending for the reader... I've dropped the score from ten to 9 because that kind of ending (half assed ending) is the worst possible ending

Maybe they're all in some kind of "Afterlife"?
That island somewhat became a memorial ground afterall.

Nedry broke the viral and was eaten by a Dilophosaurus. /jks

One spoke of the magnetic interference theory, maybe that brought the plane down? Like LOST... And LOST had people time travel too, maybe its a similar thing.

All its missing is a black smoke monster.

Either the manga was rushed, or cancelled. I don't think the mangaka ran out of ideas. Everything in the manga connects until the ending came. No explanations about what the biohazard is, Miina's amnesia, Hades, etc. But I'm hoping for a sequel :(

The only thing that made me like the ending (for a bit) is Yarai/Motoko.

I think this is it. Mangaka was rushed... and the end was so crappy.

Man that ending was a disgrace! I feel offended... to cut of loyal readers like that. I will not even consider reading a sequel (should there be one).

IMO it would be dumb not to, since it might satisfy you, or else all the time you took reading this would be very much wasted. If there is a sequel, you should put it on hold and check around the forum, see how the readers commented on it, then only decide whether to read it or not

Well, that was quite rushed and the mangaka left a lot of loose ends.

Miina didn't know about the island because it was created after the plane disappeared.
But what about Hades, how is it that no one knew who he was?

And the LOST kind of ending was expected

I think the time before the plane crashed, we saw a really dark sky (view inside the plane) so to say if this is also a Sci-fi fantasy whatever genre, the plane went ahead into the future.. just saying this coz of the huge cliffhanger ending just to get this over

But that was a big bummer, the real world aprox continued 40-50yrs.. while the other world for just 3yrs and a few months..

or just maybe the theme Dream World

I believe the mangaka tried to make the ending go all ways - Dream, Copy thing, Time travel... But messed up because think about it, invisible bird appearing inside the plane, lol.
Author intent = All endings
Only possible ending even if shady = MOTHERS DREAM, the island probably never even got finished or it never even was about reviving anything and the mother just saw it in her dreams that the extinct animals exactly like in the picture book were there and her anger and whatnot were the reason people kept dying.......... . .. . .

WTF with that ending.

I didnt understand anything, so i made a theory that makes me happy (?

Time travel, they crash mmh.. 60-90 years after the real plane crash. The mom dream abaout that, some kind of conection, its doesnt matter really. The island obviously got finish.

Then the Mariya's theory, that in THAT time, the world was devastated by that virus and when they finally arrive Japan they will found everything destroyed.

Hades is.. like god, an invisible man.

Kouhei is... in some place, living with a monkeys (?

And that is all.

Sorry for my english :/

I signed up to explain my thoughts on this.

Based on the previous chapters, RAIKA island is located within the Dragon's Triangle.

Like the Bermuda Triangle, there have been a lot of reports of missing ships and planes in that area.

My theory is that the Isurugi group (islands there are mostly of the Izu group by the way) makes the assumption that the plane was somehow warped into the future due to an unnatural phenomenon in the Dragon's Triangle and so they created an island where it last received communication so it would not fall into the sea.

I have a feeling that the author assumes that the readers are already aware of this area and will not explain it.

About the animals, I have no idea why would they create something which could kill them. Probably some sort of gift to Miina.

Going back to tokyo is another adventure thus it will have a sequel in my opinion.

Yep I finished it and I'm not going to say what's already been said. I still love the manga from beginning to end and the characters so I still give it a 9.5/10. It had plotholes it had other problems but that's ok because I enjoyed myself throughout almost every chapter.

The ending was rushed but until I know the true reason I hold off being mad because things happen and I'd rather have gotten an ending than for the manga to be like hunter x hunter with the author being to sick to finish the manga.
Miyauchi is still the girl and yurai is still the guy even at manga's end so that made me happy. It was a good ride and good manga so with that I bid adue to you all.

You know that does sound very convincing and like that could be true. Because for one they never found the plane or anybody dead. The animals were already explained it was a gift to miina to fulfill her the promise to her father.

Dissapointing as hell, same as Negima great development but awful end.

Soooo many plot holes, and what about the pilot that once said that they had to hurry and leave the island, why was that said, definitely rushed ending.

Wait... how the hell can you guys think that they're cloned and placed on the (REPLICATED) plane surrounded by extinct animals to shred them to pieces? That is honestly the most screwed up, swiss cheese-holed theory I've heard!

And that it's just his mother's dream? What kind of a screwed up dream is she putting her son in? And refering to it in what seems to be a "fun adventure time!" tone to boot! Plus, the timeskip AND the "The world might not be okay" foreboding Moriya gave in the last chapter would be COMPLETELY REDUNDANT if that was the case. Seriously I feel like half you people who thought it's just a dream probably stopped reading right before the timeskip.

I believe they honest to goodness disappeared into the future somehow (HOW is the only question which could be answered if the series continued properly or like someone mentioned, plain Bermuda Triangle-esque magic). Explaining the mother's dreams? Mothers are known to get intuitions some times, big deal. It's not like Drifting Classroom where they had a link.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the series really was canceled and we were given this as a result. Having read Busou Renkin shortly after finishing CoE, and Nobuhiro Watsuki-sensei's commentary on rushing a series ending, I feel this might really be the true reason too.

If it was for truth cancelled, I would never forgive the person who made the decision though. I doubt it's Yamada-sensei himself. But I applaud him for his ability to save it from the WORST ending that most of us probably had feared from the moment we read "THREE CHAPTERS LEFT!!" on chapter 182.

Also, I've actually just finished reading EX Shounen Hyouryuu. I didn't think the ending was too bad. It was actually pretty interesting (if somewhat abrupt and simple), but it's a legitimate ending. It just made half of your boners go limp suddenly is all.

Well even though the ending was-.... lacking, the whole series was interesting and fucking amazing.

Now I believe it isn't THAT bad, but it was simply rushed.

In fact, I think it ended pretty well with the number of chapters- it could have been worse.

It feels like it's just asking for a sequel.

Hmm i disagree with the vast majority of people here. to me it was an entertaining read, although the twists were expected and you could see them coming. As for the ending, its open book, leave it to your imagination sort of thing. I quite like picturing what will happen when they reach Japan and everything there has been also destroyed and maybe dinosaurs roam the earth once more.

I wish there was a sequel but i don't find the ending disappointing but appropriate. A rushed crappy explanation without leaving it to our imagination might have been worse. Wish it wasnt cancelled.

Also for those of you struggling with the time travel and stuff =_= seriously read some sci fi and use your imagination. Im sure if the series continued we would have gotten a full blown explanation but it would require a few more volumes to do it right. I think the mangaka didnt ruin it by copping out with a stupid explanation.

One of my favorite mangas I've read but now due to the ending I can't do reread because it pisses me off so much. I'm hoping a one shot or something might come out where all the questions they never answered (like how they got to the freaking island in the first place!) get answered. Until then I am left disappointed a great story ending so horribly.

Manga was so good up till that ending hit it. It was so hyped in the beginning; quiet a good read for sure. But like the rest of you guys, man was I disappointed in that ending. There was so much more that could of been done; what a rush of an ending. Plus theres all those questions left unanswered; this deserves a sequal or at least some answers from the mangaka.

Though that ending did leave me with some ideas. Perhaps the rest of the wo(rld is utterly dead, and these group of remaining people are technically "Adam" and "Eve," and the world thus beings (or is rebuilt) from them.

Oh also, did anyone notice that ship they were on could be a hint at "Noah's ark," by the mangaka. Like how Noah's ark was built so the "world" could survive in short, this kind of holds the same for this group of people.

i enjoyed this manga so much, but the last five chapters were so disappointing. when i read it and i realized that there are just ~ 100 pages left for the end i already tried to prepare myself for an unsatisfying ending, but... it still sucked.

i could deal with this whole "oh, we accidentally traveled into the future" stuff if it would've gotten explained somehow. but no, nothing. it didn't even have to be a perfect explanation, but even "lost" did it better than this manga.

and it bothers me so much that the author completely forgot about kouhei and hades. wtf. hades appeared two times and it was never necessary. i always thought he would end up as the bad guy, but no. just a random student who wears a mask and ends up with kouhei. wtf. at least give us an one shot for these two. a little sequel. what happened to them?

i'm also disappointed that we haven't even seen rion and akira holding hands at least. i also wanted to see yarai and this teacher together, but i would've been satisfied if at least one couple ended up together.

it would've been so much better if the author had avoided the time travel and just went with something simple like "oh, we found a secret laboratory where extinct animals were created." and then they find out the president is involved in it as well and it turns into a huge scandal.

i also never liked the storyline with mami. looking into the future, really? that supernatural stuff didn't really fit into the story.

8/10 for the whole manga. i enjoyed it a lot and i fell in love with some characters (fake miina and yarai ftw), but the ending could've been so much better.

However farfetched it may seem, the only plausible reason I can think of is if the plane just disappeared and reappeared many years into the future. The news said that they couldn't find any of the plane wreckage and it was revealed that the island should not of existed at its time. So when the plane disappeared, Akira's mom built the island as sort of a memorial and dream she had so I think she predicted the future someway.

NOW, what happened to the world in the future? Its probably safe to assume that the human population is close to extinction and may have been caused by the blue biohazard substance (did they explain why it was created?) that could of leaked outside the island. So in a way, these kids, who are probably the only survivors of the Earth, are kind of like the new Adam of Eve that is referenced alot in this series.

Maybe I just get used to it, but it seems to me that the ecchi fanservice was "almost" no existent in the latest chapters! Did all the panties shots were necessary? I didn't really mind the naked girls baths, the ecchi video... this is "normal" from junior high boys but the panties all the time during fights/death...
So -1 for ecchi but +1 for Yarai and Yarai bath time! ^o^

Mariya: why an extincted animal encyclopedia? Maybe they are studying the Jurassic period in 3rd year and since he's study a lot and want to be the best student...

Masked guys: didn't he hint the first time we saw him that people change in dead-alive condition? Wasn't a bullied guys in the airplane (don't want to re-read it)? It should be him, the mask is to hind himself (because he was bullied and if someone recognize him he will not be strong anymore) and also to make him stronger (people can do a lot of things if they don't fear to be recognize)
Kouhei: human body has his limit, even if the mind is strong, the body can be crushed, so he's probably dead somewhere

Remaining mysteries

I also don't have problem with the "future travel airplane crash", like for boats, it's pretty often in sci-fi setting! It don't need explanation, since there are no real explanation possible!
But how much in the future are they? Around 100 years or more I think.
An island created by humans, this also already exist since at least 15 years, in the west coast of Africa. This island also grows by herself.
It takes time to create and island, and then they constructed the DNA lab, make the research... and all engines looks like they weren't used since 40-50 years... should take at least 100 years!

BUT, the problem is real Miina! I don't mind her memory lost (why not, she a little girl who was is a big plane crash, she saw a lot of monsters, dead body...) but the fact she knows the weakness of the extincted animals is strange! those weakness were not in the encyclopedia, so why did she knew it?
Since it's a time travel, all those animals were created after the plane crashed so she shouldn't have "met" them before!
And the Miina's drawing in the south tower, it's almost the same drawing. It was proved the it's not just a copy (the grandpa could have made copies of his beloved granddaughter), so Miina draws almost exactly (~95%) the same animal? And who was with her in the plane? Didn't they said that his grandfather was always with her? What was she doing in Guam? It's probably not "just" a vacancy travel because his grandfather was not with her!

WHAT did the pilot saw before the crash? didn't he said that they don't have much time? still more than 3 years later, no problem??? Btw, why Kouhei kills the pilot? was it really explained? Was it just because he was lying about the radio...??

How Kurusu-sensei didn't get pregnant? And Hanamura the big lips girls who always had sex with Ryouichi Suzuki? Did loli trap had sex with the three otaku?

And also:
How all those students can still wear their school uniform after more than 3 years in the jungle? The boys grew up during those three years, no? Did they find a school uniform factory under the school like building? and for the shoes?
How did those girls could have so much shampoo and body soap for a 4 days trip? and did there was an hairdresser on board also? Where did those guys found their tobacco? Did they even try to eat meat? No dead in the last 3 years... did all the beast stopped attacking them because... no reason or did Kouhei kills them all?

I have probably much more question, but I read all 21 volumes in Japanese in less than 2 days so I probably mixed some things...

Just finished reading this. As for the ending, I won't discuss the fact that it seemed too rushed, but, hey, the rest was good enough for you people to make it to the end, no matter how much it was disappointing, you can't deny the enjoyment you had for the rest.

When you think about it, it kinda makes sense : if we suppose there are no survivors on Earth when they arrive because of the Myxo-thing, and that where they arrive is the garden of Eden, they're kinda like Adam and Eve, except Eden looks more like Hell. My two cents.

As for the rest, knowing how they got there is surely what I would like to know the most.

What I hate most about the ending is that I loved the rest of the manga. It is probably one of my favorite of all times, but now I know if I reread it the ending will always leave a bitter taste in my mouth. Hell, even if the author didn't write a new one shot, it would be nice to have at least posted on a website the answers to all the plot holes that were left open to give the fans a satisfying closure to the story. This is something I have seen several U.S. TV shows do when they have been canceled before concluding the story.

Finished the manga yesterday. Just like most people say here, i also concur that the ending was rushed, thus sucked.
And even tho i dunno or cant find anythin relating to whether that manga was actually cancelled or not, im still gonna say that in my opinion its been cancelled due to some stupid publishing company and the mangaka shouldnt be gettin all the anger.

Just judging by how rushed the ending was, and all the unanswered questions about how they got to the island, the biohazard, if they are clones, a time paradox, Hades and Kouhei blablablaaaa... its just impossible for any real mangaka to actually end a work like that. Someone must have called the mangaka up and go like "Btw you gotta end it in 5 chapters, see u next month for ur last paycheck".
Plus you gotta consider how perfectly paced the previouses intrigue and mysteries were coming along, thorough explanations and whatnot. And suddenly, throughout 5 chapters, a new biohazard comes along, a flashback (or fastforward who the hell knows?), and full stop 3 years later.
Like i said, it doesnt make any sense. Until someone comes up with a link or some source stating explicitly that the manga was not cancelled and the mangaka had to stop for whatever reason, I will keep on believing that its not the mangaka's fault, and cancellation was forced upon him.

Also, is even a mangaka allowed to himself stop his manga? I dont think so... Unless he comes up with a really good reason of course.
Ever since watching Bakuman, i learned so much about the manga industry ^^ not that im an expert now :P

Somehow the ending was not that appealing though, like the last few chapters of it was sort of rushed even though there are answers in the end, some characters were not present like Hades who was suppose to be a frequent character, and several plot holes were left answered. Chapters 182, 183, and 184 feels like it a covers up the materials really quickly but still needs a lot of detail of it. Then a time skip in the end when 3 years gone by and everyone is on the ship going home.

Overall the manga was okay, an 8/10 is my score. Just the ending of it feels rushed and several plot holes were left unanswered.
