By the way, I finally pin down the saying quoted from Sun Tzu's Art of War spoken by Anzu in this episode with the Japanese translation (of the version spoken by Anzu), the original Chinese and the English translation. Took me a bit of time but let me share it.. It is from Chapter 2 - Waging War 作戰 兵は拙速を聞くも、いまだ巧久なるを睹ず 故兵聞拙速,未睹巧之久也 Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays. This quote, as you can see from the translation, does not really say clearly that haste is in general better than delay, although it is often quoted to mean precisely that (like in this episode). I have found some notes that purport to shed some light on the difficulty of interpreting this bit of text: This concise and difficult sentence is not well explained by any of the commentators. Ts`ao Kung, Li Ch`uan, Meng Shih, Tu Yu, Tu Mu and Mei Yao-ch`en have notes to the effect that a general, though naturally stupid, may nevertheless conquer through sheer force of rapidity. Ho Shih says: "Haste may be stupid, but at any rate it saves expenditure of energy and treasure; protracted operations may be very clever, but they bring calamity in their train." Wang Hsi evades the difficulty by remarking: "Lengthy operations mean an army growing old, wealth being expended, an empty exchequer and distress among the people; true cleverness insures against the occurrence of such calamities." Chang Yu says: "So long as victory can be attained, stupid haste is preferable to clever dilatoriness." Now Sun Tzu says nothing whatever, except possibly by implication, about ill-considered haste being better than ingenious but lengthy operations. What he does say is something much more guarded, namely that, while speed may sometimes be injudicious, tardiness can never be anything but foolish—if only because it means impoverishment to the nation. In considering the point raised here by Sun Tzu, the classic example of Fabius Cunctator will inevitably occur to the mind. That general deliberately measured the endurance of Rome against that of Hannibals's isolated army, because it seemed to him that the latter was more likely to suffer from a long campaign in a strange country. But it is quite a moot question whether his tactics would have proved successful in the long run. Their reversal it is true, led to Cannae; but this only establishes a negative presumption in their favor. |

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Awesome... finally Soviets with mandatory "Uraaaa!" and song :) nice to see them - no vodka before battle but I can understand this. But KV-2 and JS-2?! Really o.O those two are tanks they should be least worry... sure they are well armoured and armed but slow... no to mention they don't carry too much ammo (I think it was around 20 in case of JS). T-34 are different thing. Sure they have shitty aiming system, zero ergonomy but they are quick. And it was visible here - luring them out, surrounding and shooting down. Not standard Soviet way of doing things but it worked here (standart was: JS breaks the line and T-34 follows up to clean remaining units). Only problem is that girls still have those shitty tanks - Panzer IV and StuG are great to deal with it, but having 3 tanks that don't use turrets is serious problem (and both M3 and B1 don't have too impressive weapons). 38t and that Japanese toy can... they look nice but that's all ;) And that overconfidence.. but maybe they have learned something about not underestimating the enemy (and Miho to stick up with her plan - they should try to do things slowly). |

^ Rated low in MAL should be the least of concern. (Besides I always question the merit of a rating system like the one used in MAL) What we should pay attention is how well it is received in Japan, its target market :-) |

Finally reach home and finished the Sub version of episode 8. Can see why this episode caused so much activity on the Forum. Anyway, re watch it three time now and still don't know how Ooarai will win. Not only they are at a disadvantage in terms of numbers, but also in terms of equipment and tactics. To make things worse, The big gun of the M3 is down, the Stug and Pz IV (the only serious machinery Ooarai have that are able to harm the Soviets) are unable to aim. Now all that's left ,A still formidable Char B1, but manned by inexperience crew, And the poorly spec 38(T) and that laughable 89(laughable as it's fighting a Western front war that it's no way suited). I wonder with the History team knowing that Snow+Russian=Stalingrad, why were they the first to begin the whole offensive idea. As far as I can see, Miho did her homework on Pravda, and things would (I think)run smoother with her plan. Ooarai suffers from the same "overconfidence" attitude the Axis suffered, seriously underestimating it's opponent until it's too late. I hope the producer have something up his sleeves, with Ooarai at the verge of closing and Miho about to be disowned, this is definitely the darkest episode so far... ...Which makes me eagerly want to watch the next one quick. And been playin 'Katyusha' for the sixteeth time now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jftmXemXzKU |

symbv said: One possibility is perhaps Miho had to lie to teams of other tanks so that it could fool everyone and thus to strike at Pravda's flag tank. Or she over-compensates and start to impose strict discipline and stops listening to her team-mates (and yet it somehow took the team to victory). This would postpone the confrontation with her mom later but will also set the stage for a team in worse morale than it should have been as a darkhorse school which manages to reach the final. Conflicts within a team and misunderstanding between team mates is a common theme in a sports drama so it is just possible that it will be explored in this anime as well. But of course you guess is also possible too :-) Another hint that may indicate how Miho's team will win is Katchusha's vow to destroy every other tank and leave the flag tank till the last to strike down. This may prove to be Pravda's undoing for its arrogance and complacency. One thing I hope to see in the next episode is how the KV-2 will use its 152 mm howitzer, which is not really designed for anti-tank (unless a special HEAT charge is used) but can be very good at blasting wall away,to destroy the building in which Miho's team is hiding. In fact if it uses the anti-concrete HEAC shell it can even bring down reinforced-concrete structure! As for the final, if they really have thoughts for a 2nd season the best may be for Ooarai to actually lose in the Final but because of exceptional performance manages to get the decision for school close-down to be rescinded. That would allow a rematch for the Miho/Maho sisters again and we can have some other combination of tournament opponents. But of course most probably the screenplay was written with no thought about a 2nd season as no one ever expected the anime to do so well. So I guess my speculation will only stay that - just a wishful thinking. I think Katchusha's vow will be the key, she also really wants to embarrass Nishizumi and that desire will cause her to make some other mistakes. Episode 9 will begin with the team using the three hours to deal with the declaration, which will involve them sitting around a fire with a siege like mentality. Then the battle and the win. I don't think Miho will get a postponement from her mom, more or an ultimatum: quit Senshado or be disowned. Hana's mom will probably reiterate her threat. The Stu has lost its tread, the Panzer's turrent can no longer turn. My guess is that they will send the Stu out as bait, and then use your shell for the rest to escape through the back (this is another reason I don't think the team is going to mind what Miho does, the Stu HAS to be sacrificed, and who better to sacrifice themselves than the History club (particuclarly Saemonza - she referenced the battle of Tennoji in episode 6 (the battle when her namesake died, this would be exactly the same situation))). Episode 10 will have the Miho and Nana coming to terms with their mutual problems. They should also go to see Saori's family (being the last team member not to have her back story filled, and in many ways Saori has been the key to this team) Miho will have some sort of insight into the strategy (pulled from Ikebana) needed to beat her sister (who recall is having doubts) and her mother. Episode 11 & 12 will be the set up, final battle, and ending. The school has to be saved because a current Japanese show would never abandon a Touhoku town. If there is a second season, it would be the world Senshado championships which were mentioned in the first episode. Then you can have the more popular figures of this series join Oourai, they would have better tanks (since the government would be funding it), and they could introduce even more modern tanks. |

Thanks No, they were riding the up-gun IV or from now on I'll call it the IV F2, as mention in the show. Regarding the Tiger, miho did notice the tank. My guesse that it will be the trump card in either Pravda or Black Forest peak. I'am saying Pravda bcuz I hope that ooarai actually did enter with the Tiger without most of them knowing and without showing us. I am also saying that because I really don't want ooarai to continue with their current equipment. Whatever is it, that Tiger will show up sooner or later. |

Miho knows that Katchusha will want to win by crushing them (the vulgar trait that Darjeeling referenced in episode 2), so my guess is that they will transfer teams, with Miho and Mako going into the Char, the Stu and Panzer will now become bait to draw the Russians into thinking they are trying an outbreak from the front, while the rest of the tanks escape. Katchusha will try for an absolute victory, but Miho will use that to lure the flag tank into their own trap. That Katchusha has been underestimating Miho from the start, will make this very possible. History is riddled with examples of numerically superior forces being defeated by smaller forces because of the arrogance and condescension of the larger force's leader. The Oourai team's weakness up until now has been both inexperience and a lack of discipline. Their falling into the trap will remove the first, and help for them to accept the latter. |

I am not very familiar with tanks, but I thought the ending song at eps 7, miho team is ridding a Tiger. Please correct me if i am wrong. Thanks @Takuan_Solo All your guesses make sense. It is surely one possible route to take for the remaining 3 episodes, and I think the world championship for a 2nd season definitely makes sense too. While I think exploring team fracture is worth doing, the length and the pace of the series may not allow much room for that. I am still interested at what point will Hana and Miho reconcile with their respective mothers though - Miho's one is particularly tough one to crack (I believe Maho actually plan to support Miho after her mother cuts off the link to Miho so that Miho can live freely as she pleases, so Maho's case is not really too much of an issue). For the battle I hope there will not be miracle development like suddenly a Tiger shows up or they can repair serious damage without the support of Automobile Club within 3 hours etc. Would be great if it makes use of Katyusha's arrogance and applies lesson learned by having been overconfident showing lack of discipline. Jyuu-niDesu said: The deployment of the tanks at the beginning of the Pravda match was showed to us and there was no Tiger. I hope that that is not a trick meant for the audience and then a Tiger showed up and told us that that chart is not really everything but what was deployed at the beginning, and then even told us that the Pravda was surprised by this because they never got a list of what tanks Ooarai got in the match.I hope that ooarai actually did enter with the Tiger without most of them knowing and without showing us. They will win, because if they loose, this will be the most abrupt ending in the history of anime[not that I know that much anime to know, but it will be bad] But what you say could be true. But since all Katyusha(is it correct spelling?)want is to embarrassed Nishizumi family, most likely the IV will go out as bait and the Stug will get iit's tracks repaired, Most German tanks carries spare tracks. Katyusha , thinking that Nishizumi will be in the IV, disabled the IV with all her might, and leaving the flag T34 vulnerable to either the Char or the Stug III(only both of them have the power to disable the T34, with the 73mm hull gun of the Lee out) Or there will be a magical moments, describe by me earlier and symbv above, that the Tiger is actually in the competition unknown to most of the Ooarai tank team and the viewers and comes to the rescue. If the story do follow the former scenario that I describes. most likely the IV will be damage to a significant degree, judging from Katyusha aggressiveness and from the way Pravda damage the 7TP twin turret in the end of episode 6. And Miho will be forced to use the Tiger P against black forest peak. Add to that, Miho should be comfortable and familiar with a Tiger considering that her previous tank she commanded was Tiger 217. |

Add to that, Miho should be comfortable and familiar with a Tiger considering that her previous tank she commanded was Tiger 217. I have rewatched the last episode and I took back what I said about the reason of Tiger not appearing in this match. Miho was indeed shown to notice that something behind the lost girls, but we never even got to see how others reacted to it (and of course nothing about that tank mentioned at all after that scene). I read from the official Twitter that none of the discovery made it into the Anzio match because of insufficient time, but in this episode we see the Mk IV upgraded and the Char refit. I guess there is nothing illogical for the Tiger suddenly making a miracle appearance though I would say it is very much a lazy way to get out of the mess (not to say by way of playing tricks on the watchers). I hope there is a honestly clever way that Miho will use to win this match, and perhaps it will be good enough to at least get her mother (and perhaps Hana's mom too) soften a little bit. |

(actually she also "spoke" in the anime, if only for a sigh ha ha, and according to the official Twitter, she was voiced by Yoshioka Maya who also voiced Kondo Taeko the girl in the volleyball team with a red ribbon wrapped around her head) Also, there is a Maruyama-san fanclub in 2ch and they have recently made the following summary of their favorite girl's appearance in the episode. Note the rare smile of Maruyama appear not once but twice in this episode: |

Seriously I can't comprehend how this team keeps on winning when they are so stupid!? lol Everything would be fine if everyone just listened to Miho. They nominated Miho to be the team's 'commander' but then they just ignore her tips and orders and get screwed up. Before the match, Miho thought that Pravda's famous for their habit of retreating and then launching an effective counterattack, so they must not fall into the trap and follow them. Yet she forgot this the instant everyone was all happy and talking about their "invincibility" due to their previous victory. And the rest of the team couldn't care less about Miho's plans, who is 10 times more experienced and better tactician than all other members of the team combined. And then they fall right into the trap... All I could do through this whole episode was facepalm time after time |

Even the call for surrender to the surrounded and trapped Ooarai team looks Soviet, as it is just what Soviet tried when they surrounded German's 6th Army in Stalingrad. The one thing I wonder whether it will be explored further is whether the teams will reflect upon their failure to pay attention to Miho's more cautious approach (not once but twice) and thus get themselves weakened and trapped. Well you know... I saw it coming right at the start of the episode. From the jubilation and high spirits of Kampfgruppe Miho to the rapid dash after the T34 and the T34 chase... It was just like what happened to the 6th Army. Though the surrender demand and Momo's reply of "Nuts!" seemed more like one of the surrender demand in the Battle of the Bulge. Holding up in that church screams STALINGRAD! Oh c'mon guys forget about "Stalingrad" and "Battle of the Bulge", this is "Girls und Panzer" not some old Hollywood movie nor some History Channel or Discovery Channel documentary. rederoin said: Why do they like her so much? She has a certain zen quality, the one picture of her smiling about the squirrel was the first time they showed her with emotion. When the rest of the team panics, she is calming reloading the gun; when everyone is all emotional after winning, she is content to stare at blue sky; when they are all scared about being in a dark room, she maintains her dignity. Plus its just fun to keep an eye out for her as Symbv pointed out. Leathalroze, you are absolutely correct, but the child sometimes has to burn themselves to learn to respect fire. Plus none of them were taking the contest seriously, after all it was their first year, they have been hopelessly outnumbered, they really didn't care about winning, just enjoying the ride. Miho really doesn't want to be there, she is only there because everyone else is having fun. Having said that, now that they have learned what the stakes are, it will be interesting to see how they are going to respond. Will they blame the student council team for not telling them (scapegoating, an easy way to appease their guilt for not listening to Miho)? This will probably be the team building process that Symbv talked about above, but if so who is going to rally them to make their final stand, risking injury to save the school? Miho? Yukari? A member of the history club? Saori (probably not, but it would be nice to see her finally get some glory, she has been Miho's hidden support for a while now). Who knows, but I do know that it will be very entertaining and for the lost part logical. The director has put too much work into the rules for them to do a deus ex machina here. Somehow they are going to work it out and come this time Monday all of us will hopefully be saying "wow that was great", like we did after six. Edit: wanted to add. If I recall the rules properly, the Tank Association sets the number of tanks, the school can decide whether to have less. I don't think they mentioned a specific number anywhere. People assumed 10 because that was what Saunders fielded. But at the same time it would make sense that the higher you go in the tournament, the more tanks there would be to emphasize strategy and not just luck. |

Nonna & co start singing Katyusha -> my jaw hit the floor. My fav version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdweaKOd7WY Now Miho and her team can do 2 things - either try to make a break or try to fortify their position and hope the whole building won't collapse. Both options are bad. It would've been better if they didn't rush, but their morale was too high and they lost control (sort of like panic, but the other way around). Being cool headed ftw! Due to that and some tactical camping I managed to get 10 frags (3k dmg) on my m18... |

And then they fall right into the trap... All I could do through this whole episode was facepalm time after time This. |

Ooarai is in trouble. Not only are they surrounded. They're stuck in a shell of a building in a Russian winter, without winter uniforms. Just like the German campaign on the Eastern Front in WWII. The History team is well aware of this, having mentioned the siege of Stalingrad. I suspect the cold will be a plot point next time. Pravda dresses more warmly, even if they still have the bare-legs fanservice. |

About number of units, how about it being tied to the terrain. Still need confirmation of Antzio’s deployed units to make sure if the number only goes up. The snow field is definitely more difficult than the island field when battling the Saunders, so perhaps higher allowance is allowed to balance the participants against the elements, while smaller numbers is allowed in case the participant have their own strategical advantage such as team that fight better with smaller number even if they have many tanks available. They now have 3 hours break. While sending help is hard to justify in competition, can Maho contact her sister through radio ? Maybe to inform Miho of their mother's decision. Although it sounds like a bad idea to add more pressure to the commander in that state. Actually when Hana's mother is shown, I'm hoping Miho's mother will come and sit next to her. Then they can have their own scene. Although that seems unlikely. Hana’s mother seems like she prefer arguing but Miho’s mother doesn’t take no for answer. |

And I guess on top of this many fans find her expression funny and mysterious at the same time. Sooner or later some fans started this "find Maruyama" game and you can see how sophisticated they have got to -- in the pic they even zoom out the tiny image of the group at a far distance to find their beloved Maruyama!symbv said: Also, there is a Maruyama-san fanclub in 2ch and they have recently made the following summary of their favorite girl's appearance in the episode. Note the rare smile of Maruyama appear not once but twice in this episode: Why do they like her so much? Actually according to the official twitter, the depiction of Maruyama was not supposed to be that daydreamy at first, at least it was not the intention of the director, but some staff made it that way and it was accepted by the director as an interesting idea. Oh, now I remember her. I just didn't know her name because /a/ always refers to her as "autism-chan". |

Katyusha riding Katyusha and marching with Katyusha. Cliche. Here I was expecting them to use Sacred War of the Red Army, but no, I'm disappointed kamerad. However, love that finally Soviet tanks shows up in winter settings. Edit: forgot to mention the use of Tchaikovsky's Dance of the sugarplume fairy from the Nutcracker makes me *hnggg~* (now, did someone said nuts?) |

As expected, their school is at stake... And the team should've just waited for orders instead of going right ahead >.< It was suspicious... well, if I were to put myself in their shoe, I guess it won't be that easy to predict it... Anyway, why do I have this feeling that this anime might break of the usual root of winning and instead lose, but their school would get recognized. And that would prevent the school from disbanding too. |

Fyi, The T34 tank is the frist tank to incorporate the following: -Spring Suspension -Sloping Armor. - sloping armour was used much earlier - I think even during I WW (if we are talking just about tanks). T-34 made it just "fashionable". - and that suspension (Christie version) was used in 30's by the Soviets and British in limited way. And why forget? I like it because of those references - if some mechas or other s-f machines would be fighting I would probably drop it already. It was used on the french Schneider CA1 i ww1 but it was used even earlier, wiki and read for yourself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloping_armour#Historical_application The panzer 4 and stug coulld handle themselves in the snow quite well all things considered, their main problem was not being to start their engines in the cold, wouldnt it be cool if they had to light fires under their tanks like the germans had to? I would be more worried about their tanks mobility if it was Rasputitsa season. Mod Edit: Merged duplicated posts; please use the edit button. |

Here's the real thing, for comparison. Russia recently held an anniversary parade through Red Square with troops in WWII gear and with WWII tanks. There are a few T-35s, a Katushka launcher, thousands of troops in period uniforms, and even a band playing Katushka. http://rt.com/news/red-square-military-parade-173/ |

A great episode, with many enjoyable scenes (Mako and Rommel vs Sodoko, more Darjeeling, the Student Council photographs, the battle, and the butchered Russian song that I still loved). It also seems that Maho doesn't think of ill of Miho, not only had she not said anything insulting to her in previous episodes, but she seemed to be genuinely sad during her talk with the mom. I hope for a very climatic scene with her in the last episode, maybe throwing away the match and making Black Forest lose or something like that. 4/5. |

The team got reckless and drove right into the enemy's trap. High morale is good, but it made them act rashly. They even stopped listening to Nishizumi; their commander. Way to put pressure on her at the very last second by dropping a bombshell like that! How the hell is she going to think up a good strategy with the risk of the school being disbanded? Maybe they'll escape the building by shooting a hole in the back... |

This is the summary of the official twitter about Ep.8 - Uesaka (Nonna's seiyuu) taught everyone the Russian pronunciation. - Those who have not noticed, please take a good look at the school emblem of Pravda school. - The names of Sodoko, Gomoyo and Pazomi were coined by Mizushima the director. - The PzIV not only got a longer gun and a bunch of structural modification, the Anko mark also got bigger. - The jacket worn by Momo at the kotatsu scene (Anko-nabe dinner) is a Luftwaffe leather jacket. It is something Director Mizushima dearly wants. - Of course Katyusha is a nickname. She has her real Japanese name. - For the Ooarai team, only the Stg III has been equipped with winter track. - Only the Stg III got winter camouflage, and there is a reason for that. - It is Director Mizushima's idea to have the Pravda girls singing "Katyusha". It was decided way back in screenplay draft stage. - However, the idea of having the war cry "Uraaaaa!" before the singing came from Uesaka (Nonna's seiyuu) and was added during the voice recording. - In the last part of the Katyusha singing, almost the entire cast of GirlPan joined in the singing lol - The Katyusha singing scene will of course appear in the BD/DVD of GirlPan released in Japan, but it may not come up if it is released in other countries. - The idea of the characters Katyusha and Nonna came from Shimada, who was responsible for character original design (he was also the design for Strike Witches as well). He made the suggestion back in the screenplay draft stage. - Sugiyama, a producer of GirlPan, said winter battle reminds him more the Battle of the Bulge than the Russian Front. - Yukawa, another producer of GirlPan, jokingly said Sugiyama insisted on adding the "Nuts" comments in the screenplay during the winter battle. - Katyusha was a song common in primary school music textbook when Sugiyama was a pupil but he is not sure if the song is still being taught in schools in Japan. - B1bis is heavy but Mako is smart enough to climb the slope by zigzagging up. - We had planned for more witticisms from Darjeeling as well as history reference comments from the History Girl Team in many episodes, but because of length limit we had to cut them. - Sugiyama commented he was impressed with the CGI used to depict the softness of snow via showing the operation of the suspension system on it. He wants to thank Graphnica, the company which did the CGI. |

Good stuff is good. Reading in these forums that all of this was more or less a homage to Stalingrad makes it even better. I was wondering what the "nuts!" line meant, thanks for the info guys. I actually got into this series because of the Katyusha song scene and I'm glad I did. Just a well done scene that shows how serious these girls are about all this. It'll be interesting to see how Miho gets her group out of this. |
