That was incredible. The sound track really made the show. It reminded me of Cossete as well, and I was surprised to find in this thread that this one man has made so many great sound tracks. Definitely gonna check out his other works. Think I'll start with kyoukai.

The artwork really was great. I know that it was cheap, but that doesn't change anything. It was beautiful and very strongly attached a certain mood to the environment. Being able to do that on a low budget is more impressive not less.

Mami has been awesome so far, and her battle just pleased me in so many ways. People are right about the air of foreboding though. I'm really not entirely sure everything is as it seems with mami and kyubey.

Whatever man. Not like I give a shit about the her as some manner of person. I could find out she was an androgenous space alien, I'd still only care about the music. Besides, it's a figure of speech. "One man was responsible for all that?" If I'd said woman it would have sounded like I didn't think women can write music or some shit like that. Like "Oh. And would you mind telling us why exactly it's so surprising that a single woman was able to write so much?" Way to miss the point man. Gosh.

Hmm, in reply to yumekichi, I think your father really nailed the meaning here.
(Just intrested: What type of PhD degree does your father have? I am aiming for a PhD in theorical physics).

Also, I could concur with you that this is a straightforward and likely explaination using context from the story of Faust. If i read up correctly without mistake, Mephistopheles enticed him with the promise that he will show Faust all of the other things he could not see, and ultimately, Faust accepted the contract, thinking that Mephistopheles could not make him enjoy his earthly life till he wishes it to last forever, which at that point the bet ends in favour of the devil and Faust gets sent off till hell, in which your points drew reference from, from my pov. I am still quite fuzzy headed about the relation of these two, but up till this point, I dont think we could draw any sustainable conclusions up till this point. And the original script (in english) is intresting too, though it will be tedious to read and i got other commitments to handle.

And lol, just as a side point, this mechanism of magic works differently from the nanoha franchise. The other side of magic is one of energy manipulation through the linker cores of the mages.

And i am glad you found this useful, perhaps we could do a sustainsive analysis when more materials come out?

And btw, it is not advisible to expect much of me when it comes to thinking, for i could be off tangent in many points that i am raising. :(
I hate myself. That is my philosophy.

You bet! We shall indeed and I shall keep elements under Faust's aspect to see if anything correlated to this.

The animation's really great, and this is actually catching my interest. I still think everyone looks like Hidamari Sketch, but I'm still hoping for more action. I want to see more of Madoka and co. battling than these school scenes here and there though.

Check these two out. First one is another text completely unrelated to Faust (I failed to search the source of the text in google) Another is the name of the witch that the magis are dealing with. I keyed it in google and it returned with nonsensical results. Could anyone care to shed the meaning and origin of these two?

The first one says "Der blühenden Rosen sollen der Königin sofort geschenkt sein," which roughly means "The roses in bloom should be immediately taken to the queen." The little mustachioed puffball helpers seemed to being doing just that. If you'll recall, in episode one, they were singing "Die Rosen schenken wir unserer Königin" ("We give the roses to our queen.") Now, as food for thought for anyone who would like to play around and read deeper into this than we probably should, I'll point out that in the final act of the second part of Faust that rose petals were the primary weapons used by the angels to defeat Mephistopheles and his helper demons. Also, remembering of course, that various classes of Biblical angels are actually described as rather grotesque while demons can be rather innocuous, just as Mephistopheles first appeared to Faust in the guise of a small, harmless animal. ;)

I absolutely love this show, even though I am not into genre mahou shoujo, it just seems.. Somehow different. Art is great, fights even greater. And yeah, as somebody stated before, I think Mami is villain. She just seems too good... I wonder what's with Homura.

Amazing. Can't accuse this series of having to depth. This episode was even better than the last one. The great art and music along with the depth of the story are the things that amaze me the most so far. Especially in contrast to other series airing at the moment (those I'm watching anyway), this one takes the cake by a long shot.

What a mindfuck that fantasy world was! Flying multi-eyed bug thingies, door after door opening and a weird ass butterfly-ish witch! =O

Loved the action in this one too. Great battle and yeah, skirt shotguns FTW. Did anyone else notice they're all one-shot-shotguns? She rather summons more guns than she reloads, which is understandable while fighting a witch. Dat gun though! O_O

Comedy is good too, especially their friend misunderstanding their whole secret situation and assuming they're starting to love each other. ^^

Any wish can be granted, in exchange for a life threating job as mahou-shoujo.
I don't know If I'll do it. See, the setting is so deep it even makes me wonder! =P

Can't wait for the next one.

.

Ahh, thanks for translating. Now it makes sense. Also, just to add that it did not help that that devil flirt with the angels as well, causing him to lose Faust in the process. That line you translated also explains the presence of the roses itself. If the witch is the personification of hope and despair, then why use roses to represent her?

And oh well, witches are perceived in the magi's psyche to be one of no good, so the grusome drawing seems to justify that. (she looked like a lump of meat on butterfly wings). I agree through, that looks can be deceiving. (but not even the devil could withstand the chanting of the bible)

Thanks again for clarifying. I am a idiot when it comes to any language other than English, Chinese, and to a little extent, Japanese.

@ Onyxthegreat: Glad you are enjoying it. The visuals itself conveys a lot of meaning. They even put a lot of thought into the costumes of the magi.

You're very welcome, although I accidentally forgot to answer the second part of your question concerning the runes that are used in the show. I won't put the below in spoilers since it's really just speculation, but those who really would prefer to just enjoy the show rather than overanalyze it probably shouldn't click:

First and foremost, here is the site you need to be visiting to keep up with what has been going on:
http://madoka.wikia.com/wiki/The_Puella_Magi_Wiki

EDIT: Same site as mentioned by zeroyuki92 above -- couldn't see due to the lag.

To this point, the answer to your question is best summarized by this image (VERY BIG - 3MB):

I have to say, I've spent more time on /a/ in the last few days than I have in a very long time, and observing how people respond to the challenges this show presents is almost as interesting as the show itself. Such a collective effort would have been very difficult many years ago, so watching a networked push to try to unravel the mysteries of Madoka is remarkable. Something similar occurred last year with Sora no Woto, but this is something else indeed.

Urobuchi said in an interview before airing that he wanted a "heartwarming" show. Right now, considering Urobuchi's history and the hints dropped, I'm leaning toward Kyubey being mephistophelean, Sayaka and Madoka destined to become enemies, Homura as Madoka's future ally, the whole "hunt" as savage duel between the magical girls themselves, and byzantine layers of symbolism spread deep. But in the end, this may very well be nothing more than a huge misdirect by Urobuchi and we'll throw our hands up and say 'What was I thinking?" Even if so, it is very nice to see a story come by every so often that really pushes the viewer out of their zone of comfort into actually thinking about what they are watching, and just on that merit alone it has become one of my favorite shows in recent memory.

Incredible episode!! Mami is pure win!!

Her costume is great, her weapons/abilities are amazing, and the finishing pose was boss!

I can't wait to see Madoka and Sayaka's weapons?/abilities!!

The story is already coming along nicely.

The art is fantastic!!

I'm surprised how many high quality shows there are this season, and this probably the highest of them all.

I like the fact that there's no ED, it gives us another 1:30 of episode.
That's 18 minutes for a 12 episodes season, that's pretty close to another episode.

Looking forward to more!

OMGWTFBBQ, so they have created a Puella Magi wikia, and a good one too. Thanks for informing, and i have read the whole site :).
And the runes....It is just a simple ciphertext that is cracked by substituting the symbols as german letters. Guess it is Shaft mistake to release the line of text from Faust as it is equivalent to giving the language of the plaintext to those code crackers. And lol, I dont blame then for the failed frequency analysis; the size of text is too small at episode 1.
I myself don't do speculation, so I am keeping my options open about what will happen next. What is more important is the mechanism of this anime, like what kind of magic this anime use, the witches, symbolism, what are the functions of the mages. This gives a general picture rather than the speculation, which focuses on the specifics.
Yup, and animes like this are meant to be analyzed, and this is how it is supposed to be appreciated.(ie IT IS NOT JUST THE NICE MUSIC AND VISUALS) And this is not the deepest yet. That is insane information but of all I am concerned about Kyubey being evil or even Mephistopheles himself. I am though interested as to why would Kyubey do this other than self destruction of the human race, which in general demons do want to. In fact they want a whole planet like that but those are other theories as to why. This is all very interesting info, that needs to be proven and seen if it really will be like that.

I do remember tons of references and analyzing in regards to to Sora no Woto. It's good to know people are to back to share what they know. I facepalmed when they even used a alphabet towards the name of the witch, that of being Gertrude. That reminded of Strike Witches where there is a witch called Gertrude in there.

Okay, not as good as the first episode. Yes, it was interesting, but the pacing kinda felt off.
The girl thinking they were lesbians was a lame joke, and I didn't like the trippy art style of the witch's world. Yes, it's different, but I don't find it appealing. I hope we'll get a normal art style for a witch's world soon.
I still liked the episode though. 4/5, I'm looking forward to the next one.

They do have wishes. Just not a wish worth risking their lives for. Hell, if someone came to me and said "I'll grant any one wish you have", I'd go "HELL YEAH! Give me a second!".
But if he said "But then you have to battle evil witches, and you might die', I'd be "Oh... uhm... OK... I think I'll take some time to consider this".

I don't know about you guys but I'm bit skeptical of Mami explaining the reason why Homura attacked Kyubei...
IMO, the reason why Homura attacked Kyubei is because becoming Mahou shoujo is a big mistake where although you get your wish granted you will have to put your life as compensation... I mean, I'm pretty sure that she is trying to stop Kyubei to produce more Mahou Shoujo as it would only bring misery and saddness to those newly made Mahou Shoujo.

I got this sort of idea where, if you remember episode 1, when Madoka was guiding Homura to nurse office, Homura asked Madoka if her family and friends are important to her and stuff like that....

I don't know, I might be thinking too much but yeah... and also imo, that Mami girl is kind of suspicious as well... like you get omnious feeling from her...

Anyway, it's a lot different than those cliche Mahou Shoujo work and as expected of SHAFT, I really like the visual art work + OST

I like the concept of them getting one wish in exchange for battling the monsters/risking their lives. But I hope they don't make selfish wishes or something totally cliche.

All in all nice ep (4/5) and can't wait for the next one XP

Yes, I also don't really like speculating, since people are tend to predict things too far, when things usually don't go as far as that :D

For what I can perceive till now, I just could say that I can't trust both of Mami and Kyuubey. Witch is probably deeply related with mahou shoujo, probably witch is something such as fallen witches.
"Senjougahara" is not a bad one, but neither maybe Mami and Kyuubey, maybe they just share different opinions, and maybe the two young "magician wannabe" will also stand in different faction in the end.

And heartwarmings hints maybe relate with wishes and things which is lost by deciding to become a mahou shoujo.

Im kinda sadface after looking through 7 pages responses and only one person other than myself recognizes The Humungus. guess its too old for most people here.

I thought it has the title of lord. From mad max 2.

I cheated through; it is on the wikia and I read it just yesterday.

And damn, the movie is older than I am -.-', so it is obscure to us youngsters. It is critically acclaimed through.
I hate myself. That is my philosophy.

Best show this season.
Best mahou shoujo to have ever aired since Nanoha.

After only three episodes it's just beginning but so far, this is way better than Nanoha.

Best anime ever.

they're flint lock rifles not shotguns

More like muskets than rifles.

This show is getting more interesting, I thought it was gonna be some cutesy thing about magic girls battling monsters blah blah blah but it has some depth to it which is good.

Wow, the story is starting to seem really nice. At least I think the way witches are portrayed is interesting. I'm not talking about their visuals, that was kinda disappointing. I was totally not expecting the witch to be a slug monster... In spite of that, I actually really liked the battle scene. One musket per shot is totally awesome. Anyway, I still can't seem to enjoy how the characters and background blend. The character designs are a bit hard to swallow too. Especially Homura. Besides that, the art s great and the music is gorgeous so not too much complaining about that.
