China is a massive country and this was realeased during lunar new year, when Chinese people take like 2 weeks off from work and have time to watch movies. I'm not denying this could be fixed, there's no concrete proof but it's likely knowing the CCP. However, besides the above, this was also realeased at a time when people are getting tired of Disney and other Hollywood slop. There is enough credibility to this movie's success.
@AzafuseKingTora another silly chinabot wasting everybody's time? I've already been through the math, little child.

"this movie couldn't even break 10 million$ on opening weekend in US and Canada and is nowhere to be seen in the EU or India. Even assuming they would get 50% of the ticket sales (they don't), they'd need to sell over 600 million tickets in China to reach those numbers as a movie ticket costs 5$ over there."

It's even worse today, at just 31 million $ worldwide how many weeks later?

Always funny seeing little children talk about china being a massive country while forgetting that India, their neighbour is equal to them in numbers.

Ahahah, people take 2 weeks off and they go to animated movies? You know less about 30+ year olds than I do, chinese or not.

And no, people getting tired of western media isn't enough to prop up a mediocre, ugly chinaman cartoon which couldn't even be released globally. There is zero credibility to this movie's success even moreso now with the final box office numbers, as nobody will still air it so long after release.

Yeah...other movies in which I was not thematically interested. Especially strong aversion against the Shrek-verse and the Transformers-verse.

The thing which pisses my off here is that people pay attention to Ne Zha not because it has a compelling setting, story and characters. It even doesn't look that great (in its trailer) in comparison to ongoing dongha TV series like Hu He Yao Shi Lu and Cang Yuan Tu 2 which I follow.
They just go "But it made a lot of money!" and jump blindly into Ne Zha 2 without context.

On a tangent here, Saberspark praised the bulgarian animated movie Treasure Planet (for contextq I am from Bulgaria and I have watched this movie many times as kid)...well not for being good (which it isn't, also a lot is lost in the english dub), but for its authors having surrealistic experimental approach.
Dude likes animation in general and will enjoy something just for being exotic.

@alshu This seems to be gaining a sorta cult status amongst animation fans in the same way a lot of the current Dreamworks output (Puss in Boots 2, Bad Guys, Wild Robot) and other things like Transformers ONE or Flow are getting. So far ive seen Saberspark and Schafrillas praising it, and apparently there's a lot of Yaoi and fujo stuff. Maybe it doesn't mean anything outside the cartoon neiche, but there is an audience alright.
1st animated film and foreign film to reach 2 billion USA dollars!

@robertino129 Please talk without sucking your own dick. Calling everyone who disagrees with you a china bot or a child is, ironically, pretty childish.

Funny that you mention India, the average Bollywood film makes as much as the average Hollywood movie makes Internationally with just a Domestic crowd.

You're missing the fact that most of these people HAVE KIDS. The movie is aimed at families, something to take your kids to.

Also, aren't you that weirdo who absolutely despises western media for getting inspiration from Anime?

@alshu Makes sense, Animation/Cartoon fans, who are more easily pleased by kids media have different standards than Anime fans, who generally expect more adult content due to the very nature of each industry. The people who like Dreamworks and Pixar are going to enjoy Ne Zha more than the average weeb.

This speaks more to the size of the Chinese market and how many Chinese people there are in the world than to the quality of the movie itself. I doubt it's that good.
