A lot of the tracking shots felt really unnecessary and distracting. The colours didn't feel like it suited the tone of a light-hearted romcom type show, and this seems to be the same colour palette GoHands uses for a lot of their shows like K, Hand Shakers, etc.

I will say that it is a lot more tolerable than Hand Shakers, and that there is a lot of talent and effort put into the animation, but it feels distracting, and at parts uncanny and janky. Particularly in the tracking shots with the walk cycles feeling unnatural, and Mie moving around with her hair having a life of its own. There is still the problem of the CGI backgrounds mismatching from the 2D animation. it feels like images cut and pasted onto an unpolished Blender background.

It just feels like a really misguided effort despite the effort and ambition.

Edit: After sitting with it a bit more, another thing that I picked up is that the backgrounds feel like unity assets that they dispatched for the scenes. Nothing feels tailored to this anime specifically. Everything looks too pristine (not in a good way) and reflective in the hallways and classrooms. You would think that schools have a bit a wear or some sort of textural element to it that makes it feel lived in, but everything feels too uniform and fresh out of the unity assets catalogue in implementation.

It definitely feels like it is having an identity crisis with its pretense as a romcom and its insistence of the GoHands trademark style with its colour palette and camerawork that just doesn't offer anything of value to the scenes.

like others have said before me, it feels like a breath of fresh air. romance anime or even sol in general seem to be stale and lack identity nowadays.

I like it a ton it feels very immersive and engaging. It makes something as simple as walking down a hallway very entertaining.

Hoping you meant puts you off - as in off-putting.  Otherwise, I've got questions, but pretty sure I don't want the answers.

I personally Like it very much

They made a 3D environment (very well done tbh) but then the 2D animation on top of it feels off especially with those crazy camera movements

When people are walking around it's horrid and makes me want to vomit. When they are just sitting down or standing still the show actually looks pretty great. I have nothing against the use of 3D or CGI especially in backgrounds but here I really hope they drop that nonsense after the first few episodes.

I also imagine the people liking the crazy angles and distorted looking models also like those 4K 60FPS anime clips on YouTube.

I like the idea of a following camera and unique sequences, some of the shots are also cool. I am less happy with the exaggerated fisheye lens that makes the perspective look really weird as well as the overused shoe to top angles. overall positive though
It's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.

I can confidently say I hate it. The camera pans and angles are ALL over the place which makes the show seem ridiculous. I also hate how Meis hair is ALWAYS moving, feels like a video game character that has a glitch on her hair.

Personally i really like the animation + the camera angles, i seriously don't get how people dislike it.
Though I also thought hand shakers didn't look that bad so.... maybe i just have terrible taste?

I genuinely feel like the anime was made on yandere silulator and than they put some after effects on it. To be very honest, couldn't stand 5 minutes of it before giving up. My hopes were high, and now they went all the way down.

Few seconds in I knew this was GoHands. I don't know, the colours and angles feel too much and the art itself looks a bit neglected... I enjoyed stuff like K project but it can get visually tiring... I'm kinda glad it got a bit less insane after the intro

Funny, I didn't know there was some sort of asigned color palette for romcoms. As someone that has seen tons of slice of life and romcoms I've seen some really "out there" color schemes, from washed out colors like "Kamisama Hajimemashita" to discount Makoto Shinkai oversaturated "Bokura wa Minna Kawai-sou". Every title has it's own feel based on colour schemes.

Can you name a single highschool anime title that does this kind of detail level on wear and tear in their backgrounds? You can't? Yeah, I didn't think so either

It adds dimension to this unique world. It's their way of saying "this isn't your average romcom that looks like an american sitcom with 3 different sets and the same medium shots and closeup shots". It adds a lot of life using several unnamed characters on the streets and inside the school premise.

I appreciate that the visuals seem to offer something for you, but the culmination of the visual assets implemented does not appeal to me. It goes without saying that this is all subjective, which is the premise of this thread, so I don't really get where the hostility is coming from.

When I refer to wear on environments, I mean the specific staging of the setting that background artists would do. Of course, this show has its own set of artists for this case, but it came across, as I said, as some stock unity backdrop. You ask for shows that I think do it well. I can refer to shows like Sound Euphonium, Tsurune, Hanasaku Iroha (with varying degrees of success), if I were to restrict it to SoL, but it shouldn't matter if it is SoL, fantasy or action. The staging of the environments should feel lived in regardless if this is something we are going to bother critiquing. And it should be critiqued, considering this is something they are really pushing for here. And it all comes to naught when the combination of everything makes some viewers feel nauseous or motion sick.

Although there are a lot of moving background characters, it doesn't really change the fact that in this show, the background CGI feels sterile. What you say makes the show "unique" from the colour palette also feels recycled from GoHands' previous shows like Hand Shakers, though I can see the argument that it is the studio trademark.

This is just the impression I have from the first episode. GoHands definitely has the talent for their shows to go places, I just think that it was not executed well here.

Man GoHands really loves giving people motion sickness. I wish they'd would at least TRY to learn some compositing. -And the rainbow color vomit all over the screen is kind of obnoxious.
I like what they're *trying* to do here... probably. There's just no purpose to it. It's all style and no substance. Which wouldn't be so bad if that style were any good. But all it really accomplishes is making the anime harder to look at.

I dunno, I'm probably just gonna read this one. GoHands anime hurt my eyes too much.

I also like it, I agree that the director sometimes gives a good exaggeration.. But I much prefer this with a lot of movement than rotten anime that has nothing to do with animation that comes out every season..

Is it some sort of artistic move? Strange angles to give off close-ups and zooms to resemble the view of a short-sighted person?

I couldnt stand it. Felt fake and like they were trying too hard to standout to cover the lack of anything else interesting. Made me motion sick and wonder if it was all cgi being covered. Really disorienting.

I can enjoy some good CGI with absolutely insane camera angles, but the way the characters move is to uncanny.

Certainly more movement is generally better, but not if it means walk cycles like that.

Ok, it has been 2 months since I wrote this and I have reformed.

The mess of an opening few minutes is still off-putting, but it's the animation that's really carrying this show for me. It's so lively and full of motion and it was only off-putting at the start. I was going to drop it after about three episodes but now it's one of just 8 full-length new series that I'm keeping up with this season.

It's horrible, and it's also full of errors in the animation. On the other hand, 3D animation generally doesn't look good in anime, it feels weird (plus, we all know that due to low budgets it's usually poorly and effortlessly done)

Camera panning occasionally feels really stiff and unnatural.

One moment I remember from episode 2: panning upward on a character sitting at a desk and THEN suddenly panning horizontal in the same shot (not simultaneously like you might be imagining) was one of the strangest visual decisions I've ever seen in a televised anime. It's so rigid and at odds with the idealistically dreamy visuals the show is otherwise trying to work with.
