Can't believe it still manages to pull a twist ab first season this late in the game. I was so ambivalent ab the ending of that one, which is the biggest reason why I don't list this anime as a masterpiece. Seeing the real events helps so much. A rewatch would be fantastic.
Certainly the most beautiful show recently. So many trees and sceneries cramped into 1 ep.
Biggest disappointment is the film showing. It could be such a totally bombastic moment but somehow it's only 70% effective. But anyway hyper-detailed, down to that old film recording of Yakumo n Sukeroku's voice.

How old is sensei? The accident happened 30 years ago. He saw Miyokichi when he was a teen and she was still dating Kiku.
If we say he was 14 then. After she broke up with Kiku, had Konatsu, so we add at least 6 years (unless Konatsu was much younger than 5), then 30 years.

So sensei is more or less 50. He sure doesn't look like 50.

He met Miyokichi before World War happened, cuz after WW she came back with Yakumo's master to Tokyo.
Now it's the 80s cuz there's a The Last Emperor poster in ep 2. So yeah, in his 50s

Didn't notice the last emperor poster but it makes sense because in the S1E1 it's written 1971 on a magazine. And we are like 16 years later and the Last Emperor came out in 1987.

Oh, shit. Crazy geisha bitch actually stabbed Sukeroku? And Konatsu witnessed it all as a small child?

Yakumo carrying all of that with him, protecting Konatsu :')
That's a burden that is way too heavy.

Also, it is technically Miyokichi's fault, it always was hers.

Wow, great episode. I (just like many other people), thought that the ending of 1st season was a bit forced... well, now we know why. I didn't expect this reveal, so it was a nice surprise.

I suspect this show is more about reading between the lines for numerous things and that's part of its charm, so I think what actually happened is that Miyokichi tried to stab Kikuhiko in a haze, and she accidentally stabbed Shin, most likely because he tried to protect his friend. And then obviously Kikuhiko was shocked, and to add to that he also loved Shin... jesus man what a mess. I feel so bad for the fact that Kiku carried this burden for all those years to protect Konatsu, painting himself as the bad guy when in reality he wasn't responsible... I also feel like Kiku feels a bit responsible anyways, because Shin protected him and because he couldn't catch them in time. So he truly believes he deserves what's been happening.

Tbh I think Konatsu deep down knows Kiku is not responsible, but she wants to blame someone so she can be angry, when you have no one left to blame then the true sadness and despair start emerging, so it's like she's keeping her feelings at bay by blaming Kiku.

So the truth comes out. Master Yakumo made up some things about Sukeroku and Konatsu story. However, now, I think highly of Yakumo taking that burden on his shoulders, leaving no guilt for the little Konatsu.

Wow, what a twist. Why was there a knife? Was Miyokichi planning to double suicide with Bon with a knife instead? But why was Shin stabbed? So many questions!

The ending was really sweet. Yota is such a yotarou :P

This version of their death is even more outrageous.
Damn, she was such a horrible person. And he acted like an idiot until the very end.

One second he is unconscious on the ground in Yakumos arms and in the next second he jumps after the b**** that just stabbed him? Moron.

Now I get the whole thing man she really had stabbed Sukeroku =-=

Even I could feel how great the directing was how they showed their old house while Sukreroku's rakugo was a brilliant idea.

WOW. I did not see this twist coming.

I was pretty dissatisfied with how they handled Sukeroku and Miyokichi's ending in the first season. But now to find out it was all a lie by Yakumo... I am flabbergasted.

Just amazing. I have no words.

It was so cool seeing Sukeroku and Yakumo perform rakugo again in their primes. It was shocking to be reminded of how much fun Yakumo used to have performing rakugo, which was stripped away following the death of Sukeroku and Miyokichi. I was a bit confused at first when Matsuda was retelling the tale of Yakumo's death, with it being so different from what we were told in the first season. That version is waaaay darker (I love it). I also think that version makes more sense. It's just as sad, if not sadder though, in that Miyokichi even stabbed Sukeroku and he still leaped after her.

Wow, this series keeps surprising me. O didn't expect that the little trip would have such a reveal in store. The full extent of what really happened back then gives the struggle of the characters even more weight.

Also more fleshed out backround for Eisuke and Yakumo going to stop with Ranugo is indeed a sad though. Almost as sad as seeing Shin's last performance again :'(

Kiku is such a tragic character, it just hurts me. I can relate with him in terms of personality and more, and it just... kills me. To think that the true backstory was different... did not consider that. Well, the real thing was way more tragic and terrifying, for certain.

Damn so Bon was lying and konatsu really killed them both if you think about that. This variant seems more polished than the first one but still Sukeroku died in the end :'(. Now I have more reasons to hate that bitch Miyo

The first version was a bit weird, but this one feels like trolling the viewer after the first version was shown and not told. Not to mention that this one's going a bit too much for the shock factor. I'm not positively impressed.

I was so bored for most of the episode admittedly (at least half of it minimum) but the reveal of the truth behind the deaths of Shin and Miyokichi were so brilliantly done and so traumatizing too to learn about it. Poor Konatsu... that's all I can say. Yotarou's hug and breakdown at the end with Konatsu was really touching as she's oblivious to the reality that she is burdened with but unaware of. I would call it a fantastic episode but 3/5ths of the episode were so boring and didn't really add much at all for me, not even for Yotarou and his understanding more for the person who had the name he has now. He felt deeply admirable for Sukeroku in the first place by listening to his performances, hearing stories from Yakumo and his wife and the whole conversation with Matsuda would have felt the same for me with that alone. That portion was good only to see how Eisuke got into the whole field of rakugo interest wise, but not interesting enough. Overall, an okay episode.

I can't believe all this time Yakumo made up that story to shift all the blame on himself and to avoid causing pain to Konatsu. To think that he would do all this so that Konatsu wouldn't blame herself for accidentally causing the death of her parents...

Really broke my heart to see Yotarou hugging Konatsu and crying at the end there. If only Konatsu knew of the burden Yakumo is carrying. It could change their whole relationship. But it could also break Konatsu, knowing the truth. There really is no right answer. Oh what to do...

This changed my view of Yakumo. I thought he was simply an innocent bystander and raised Konatsu out of a mere feeling of duty. But seeing how he pointed the guilt at himself instead of telling Konatsu the truth, he must really care about Konatsu. Far more than I thought.
