I don't know how, but MAL claims it only has 715 members(it was aired multiple times a day, for atleast 6 months straight on encore, and It's dubbed, how the hell does this only have 715 members). Don't worry about the 6 rating, as that's complete BS, It's easily one of the best movies ever made, rivals even the best that Ghibli has ever come out with, and is a candidate for thee #1 best anime movie ever made. |

I love the setting and the writing of this anime. | Hello! I'm fairly new to the club, but I feel like UtaโฝKata belongs in this club! Many of you may have already seen me suggest this anime all over the Anime & Manga Recommendations forums... I'm sorry but I really like this anime and I feel like it doesn't get the attention it deserves! The art and animation quality may not be KyoAni tier, but how the anime depicts the real life area of Kamakura is beautiful and the magical costumes are very unique for a magical girl show even if some of them aren't the best in my eyes. The musical score (as well as theme songs like the OP and ED) is very nice and is as underappreciated in my opinion as many other aspects of this show. At the moment of this post, UtaโฝKata has an average rating of 6.79 (from 7,469 users) and 20,429 members in total. |

| Fuyu no Semi (Embracing Love: A Cicada in Winter, 2007) Powerful Romeo and Juliet lovestory with homosexual samurai. In the 1868's Meiji restauration's civil war, two soldiers in love fight on opposite sides. A dramatic battlefield situation starts a chain of tragic events. Two plot relevant sex scenes. (7.5/10) This OVA hit me with similar ton-of-bricks-tragedy effect as Dog of Flanders and Ringing Bell previously had. It's a goddamn brilliant romantic tragedy combined with equally well done period piece and war/history drama. If that dreaded yaoi tag wasn't on it, I swear MAL elitists would talk about this a lot. You may have seen Tom Cruise in Last Samurai. That's the same Boshin civil war, and it's nice to see the Japanese version of it. By the mercy of R+ camera angles, homosexual practices are very clearly hinted at but not fully shown. They go about as far as Aki-Sora or Sister New Devil would. The respective scenes take up only a few minutes of a total 90 minute runtime and are fully plot relevant. Ep 2, timestamp 6:30 to 14:30 has most of the respective scenes. I would highly appreciate a consideration for this list, as it is probably the best OVA suprises I had in a long time. The UAS Guidelines for Series Admissions states "Anime must not be in the top 100 of majority genre". A Cicada in Winter indeed is the highest rated (7.60) yaoi anime on MAL, but (a) that's probably not a majority genre, and (b) I feel the tags romance and history have far more weight. | I think Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (TV) is a nice one to add. Very nice anime with only 30k completed and 70k total members (at the date of this post). I also suggest that in the Guidelines the "8. Anime must be older than one anime season" should be increased to "Anime must be older than a year after finished airing" because some suggestions I saw on this thread like Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue (My Roommate is a Cat) and Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen (Ascendance of a Bookworm) at the day of this post have already more than 100k total members. An unpopular anime does not increase a lot the member count while time passes; only time can say that, so I think a year is enough time to know that (other solution could be add a rule for animes with less than a year after finished airing, that's up to you, staff guys). |

| Andersen Douwa: Ningyohime (Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid, 1975) Faithful adaption of Andersen's fairy tale, which means it's sad and hasn't a happy end. Animation style is rather simple, but the story telling is fantastic. Disney's "Arielle" copied many scenes and character designs. A true forgotten masterpiece. (7/10) It's available on youtube in several uploads and languages. I'd recommend this for inclusion into club relations, as it is a highly influential anime - Disney's Arielle heavily draws from it. | Hidamari no Ki (Tree in the Sun, 2000) Blend of drama, family saga, period piece, medicine and history lesson. Half of the 50+ ensemble are real political players from 1850/60ss Japan. The generational family stories and the love triangle make it personal and emotional. Side reading needed, but splendid then. (9/10) This only got fan-subbed in 2018 and hasn't yet evolved into the "classic elitist favorite" category it belongs to. The MAL score is far too low, over at anidb it sports a rating of nearly 9/10. Deservedly so. This is the story of the 19th century ancestors of the famous mangaka O. Tezuko, mixed with real history and some dramatization (because: anime). He visibly poured his heart blood into the story, which is meticulously researched for historical accuracy. I've done a character sheet (none existed) on MAL and anidb (better version is there) in the hope it helps others to enjoy this 50+ characters show with greater ease. A fantastic anime. |

| Calling this unpopular is probably the understatement of the year. This is a fantastic kids show with big feels and amazing surreal AMWs embedded. Chibi Maruko-chan: Watashi no Suki na Uta (Chibi Maruko-chan: My Favorite Song, 1992) An outright amazing kids show. Wholesome, creative SoL about a 9 y/o girl's family, art, life decisions, and friendship. Half of the movie are surreal music videos where songs tell part of the story, half is well done drama. No need to watch main series. (7/10) |

| I've never heard anybody talking about this movie before, a happy-go-lucky watch based on recommendations of movies I liked. And it turned out to be a worthy attempt. It wasn't the 80s fantasy trash I expected, but a serious, good movie. Windaria (Once Upon A Time, 1986) Sad and grim-dark fairy tale with strong anti-war message. There's a lot crammed into movie runtime: three (sic!) romances destroyed by war, civilian suffering, the automatisms and political mechanics fueling and sustaining conflicts, futility and destruction of war. A well animated, well directed movie with rich world building (coexisting steam-punk and magic) - injustly forgotten. (7/10) |
