Cried my eyes out the entire episode. One of if not the best endings to an anime series I've ever seen. The emotions throughout the series were so very realistic and made you think what it would be like if that happened to you. Overall I'm very satisfied with this ending.

It gets an 8/10 from me. I thought it was very good - Yuuki's death really spiced things up, and I totally liked that direction, even though it was so sad...

The problems with this anime: Lack of character exposition AKA "The Grave of the Fireflies Effect" as I call it, bad soundtrack, and overusing of death.

Let me explain; A "Grave of the Fireflies effect" is a bit of a ploy that anime uses to tug at your heart and make you sad. It basically uses the effect of "here's a kid, he's dead, now cry". They could have just used a "Beck/Dog of Flanders effect" where they develop the characters before certain things occur.

Bad Soundtrack: In an anime where it is supposed to be sad, it doesn't help to use the same song over and over again.

Overuse of death: How many times did Yuuki almost die? Three times too many. It lost it's effect by the time it actually happened. I cried around episode 3 or 4 because I was like "He just died out of nowhere, poor kid", but once they used it a second time I was thinking he was still alive. I do want to throw out there that this anime would have been perfect for symbolism, and there was very little of it.

I do give this anime props for trying something different in a world where power levels are exceeding 9000 and boobs defy gravity. I will buy it, and it was very nice but it needs some retouching. I will review this sometime this week on my site if anyone's interested. I'll go more in depth than what I talked about here.

Okay, I'll say this right now...I'm not the type to cry easily at shows or movies. This entire series hasn't made me shed a tear so far, even once we learned that Yuuki was already dead. It was sad, but I never felt like I would cry in the least.

This episode had me streaming tears the entire time. God, it was so sad and touching.

I really, really enjoyed this anime. I know a lot of people had their qualms with certain things, but I think overall this was just a really amazing show and it gets a 10 from me.

Damn, I think I used almost a whole box of kleenex just now...

It was OK. I feel like throughout the season, the weak soundtrack and character design really hurt the impact. It was nice to see a couple of new tracks this episode, so my overall score goes from a 6 to a 7. The ending was decent, but almost "repetitive" with Yuuki dying multiple times. Coupled with the fact that at some points, the show dragged despite being only 11 episodes makes the 7/10 I gave it maybe on the high side as far as I'm concerned.

The series as a whole felt very mellow and anticlimactic, something I wasn't expecting from a series about a disaster. The ending on the other hand made up for most of that mellowness. It was executed very well.

Here we go, last episode, and I'm not all that late : D (4 last episodes almost in a row)
First of all, Come on Mirai, don't get a mental breakdown now, please.
That would make her seem pretty pathetic (in my eyes).
So, how long is she gonna keep halucinating that Yuuki's there? Oh I see, he's fading away now.
Come on Mirai, not a breakdown now thank you.. And not Mirai's mother either, don't get a breakdown..

Hoo-boy everyone blames themselves for Yuuki being dead.
I'm not sure, there might be something wrong with me, but instead of feeling a bit sad during the hospitalscene in this episode, I'm more like "Oh just stop crying already, and do something productive.."

Anyway, I'll give this as much as a 7/10, and I give it that "much" because the animation was pretty good, and the OP/ED were great. And of course that it was pretty realistic. Also, great bgm music too. Although that hospitalscene that I mentioned, almost made me give it a 6 instead. (Hey you know what? It gets a 7, and there's the 70% possibility of a mag7 earthquake in Tokyo. Bawahahahah.... Yeah I'm that finny...)

Now that I've watched the last episode.. I have this really itchy feeling >.> Wonder what it is..
To be honest, I was actually hoping that someone would actually die..
Maybe I'd been more satisfied with one of their parents (or both) dying instead?
Well I wouldn't know anyway, since it didn't happen.
Oh and another ED song that would be more fitting in the end here, would be "Let it out" with Miho Fukuhara, also the current ending of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. (Just youtube it or something if you don't know which one it is)

Cool story, bro.

Anyway, I feel it was a great new series to complement the summer, even though said summer really hadn't comprised of another really good new, original series (Honestly, Bakemonogatari is is pretty much over-hyped for me at this moment...but hey! That's just me...).

That said, it's not like it ever really killed me, or anyone, to use up 20 mins. of their week to watch something that is really entertaining, and there were even moments in this series that I haven't seen happen in an anime yet, so what's the big deal with all the haters? Obviously, this series wasn't for everyone, but for what it's worth, people like me really, really enjoyed something fresh this season.

Pretty meh. I wish that they turned it into something better, where Mirai loses her mind, goes crazy and jumps out a window.

Decent animation, nice destruction, though I didn't find it to be very realistic, like everyone says it was. Ending was shit.

I think this wins for the most I've ever cried during an anime. The entire episode was a bawl fest for me. Didn't help with the adorable pictures of Yuuki's early life. Saddest thing ever for me. Still a good show. I give it a 9/10 for how much tears were squeezed out of me.

a good ending for a show that started off with a bang, and then crawled like a snail to the finish line. i think Yuuki dying saved the show.

8/10 for me. very good.

my exact thought. Not ashamed to admit I cried a teensy bit when she pleaded for Yuuki not to leave and reunited with her mom, and again with all the Yuuki flashbacks. Touching.

oh 'cried a teensy bit' who am I kidding. I just rewatched a few bits and I STILL teared up again. ffff ;;

This one is a bit of a tough one for me to judge as a whole. I was hoping Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 would become an expose on human reaction to the effects of disaster rather than becoming the "OH, another aftershock's coming -- let's hide!" type disaster-movie cliché, and it held up pretty well in that regard. A lot of the quiet moments of this show were the best, such as when Mirai walked into the school midway through the series and realized it was a morgue.

On the flip side, we have the issue of Yuuki's death, which can't be ignored, since the entire narrative structure of the second half of the series was leading to that conclusion. For me personally, I view it as a matter of squandered potential. I look at that first episode (when he died) with its hints that hit you like a hammer that he was dead, and, storywise, the climax had already been reached. The rest was mere dénouement. I can't help but think that if the hints had been very subtle, if not nearly invisible to the viewer, and then revealed a couple of episodes later, it would have been more impactful. A sort of "Usual Suspects"-type ending where all the little things like Mari never looking in Yuuki's direction, or the bag, or whatever, all come together and we realize that the true circumstances of the past few episodes. That's just me, however, and my personal preferences. I can understand how the producers wanted to tip off the audience in advance so that those last few episodes became an exercise in not what was going to happen (Mirai reuniting with her parents) but rather how it was going to happen (how would the family deal with the death?)

Overall, I'd commend BONES for taking on something nontraditional like this and helping further the idea that "mature" anime doesn't have to involve sex and gore, but can rather build on themes accessible by all.

ANyone who thought less of this series needs to check on thier emotions and see if they are alive. The ending was the most touching one I've seen in a very long time. It really tugged at your heartstrings. Even I was getting a bit moist in the eyes over the death of Yuuki (yeah we knew it was coming), the reunion of Mari with her daughter and grandmother and reunion of Marai and her parents and telling them about Yuuki.

This series get's a 8/10 (the artwork as a bit sloppy...that's why it got low score).
What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

Wow. BY FAR THE BEST ANIME I HAVE SEEN THIS YEAR. I loved it since ep 1 and Yuki's death just made the anime 10941850914 times better. It's a solid 10/10 for and has always been starting from ep 1. Yuki's death was one of the best endings I've ever seen. I've never seen anything better. It made me cry couple of times too. I'm definitely buying the DVD set to this. Amazing anime.

Quite a fitting ending to one of the best drama focused shows I've seen. Yuuki's death was handled well to a point where I couldn't even compare to some of the most dramatic deaths in anime, it's just something that left me in awe. Mirai reuniting with her parents after Yuuki's death made it even more touching and now Mirai thanks to Yuuki is closer to her parent's more than ever, just as he wanted.

As far as the overall series goes, I'll give it an 8/10. To be honest after the first 3 episodes, the episodes preluding 8 were a little lackluster and some of them kind of bored me. But from episode 8 on, it provided one of the most deepest endings I have seen in anime. This is definitely the best anime this summer and arguably the best of the year.

If I had to judge this episode alone, I'd give it a 9/10. Honestly, my eyes teared up a few times and I felt that Yuuki's disappearing scene was done very well. The little surviving mementos that Yuuki left behind made it all the more tear-jerking. Moreover, the episode did a good job wrapping up everything and really showing Mirai's growth as a character and Yuuki's quiet yet significant role in that development.

For the series as a whole, I find it a bit harder to judge. I remember a few episodes leaving me pretty underwhelmed and I felt that, while the idea of TM8.0 was very good, they could have done a lot more with it in terms of execution. In other words, this series had a lot of ups and downs to it, so I find it hard to sum it up into one grade. I've had it at a 7/10 for most of the series and am considering bumping it up to an 8 because the ending was done well, but for now, it'll remain a 7 ^^;

Geez, rewatching this episode still makes me cry. Hell, even screencaps and the ending theme song is making me tear up. Why?!

Though I think I'll have to get the soundtrack of the show now, just because of the music in the last ep.

EDIT: Oh my god, it's Koh Ootani? That explains my love for the music!

Now that you mentioned it, I recall that I lmao watching Air, I mean, GOAL!

Anyway, back to T.M 8.0, I really liked how they portraited all the stuff going on in the anime through out the whole story. And as far as i remember, most of the episodes, I felt the rare, realistic atmosphere that no other anime could have given or succeeded even. Characterisation, pace, good research on not only earthquakes but also the possible after effects of it on humans and overall the quality of the show did a respectable job from my point of view. With some improvement overall and with a little polished animation, it would have made a great series, but as it is, hell yes, this has been a veryyy and I mean VERY good show all in all. A solid 8.

Mirai goes to high school! She's now a much more sensible person. Maybe she'll even graduate at the top of her class. It wouldn't be bad if they did a sequel called Tokyo University 8.0 or something, lol. (Just kidding.)

I love how they ended with Mirai watering the plant. That made for a full circle. Even if things/people come and go in this world, some things will never change. Beautiful ending to a very dramatic, memorable show. Mirai, Yuuki, and Mari will be missed. I'll have to re-watch the entire show in a marathon one day. 9/10 <3

They didn't do it...
When i first wathched the episodes i thought their parents were dead and that Mari would be their substitute parent, but instaid they made the taboo.
And i hate it but love it so much. a good movie or series should play with the emotions, even if it''s sad ones. I love it because it's the best anime that i've ever seen. haven't cried so much on a series before... but i hate it because it was so heartbreaking. I felt so clinged to Yuuki and now i feel depressed.
I can only give it 10.0/10.0.
And since i loved that boy so much i wrote a death letter:
To Yuuki.
I didn't know you well and you didn't know me. Well, after all you were a fictional character but you should know that many people loved you and still do. You have been through alot and felt so much pain that it was almost unbearable, but you went to heaven with a smile and we will always remember that. Heh, i still remember the first time i saw you. you were just a little annoying kid that clinged too much to your sister. but you grew up so much just after some days and showed such a brave side. I wish the hospital scene were just a dream but you can't get everything.
Well, i hope you can rest in peace. take care Yuuki and draw a lot of frogs.

This was great. An episode worthy of a finale for sure.

Can't help but notice the large amount of details when it comes to art, you can tell they were taking their time with this one. The whole thing with Yuuki seemed a tad cliche but in the end it was handled well. For a moment I had thought the message on Mirai's cellphone came from the "other world" but I soon realized what was actually the thing there. Neat.

The ending makes the anime seem a good deal better when I reflect on it as a whole.

I don't understand why people think it's so "Mediocre"
I think it was absolutely fantastic, right from Story to Animation.

Sure, the story was plain and it was basically what real life is like, but you don't have to have Wizards & Magicians or Fox girls to make a good Anime.

This was truley fantastic, I loved how real & honest the Anime was.
Yuuki's death made the climax, I think it was very necessary, I came close to crying.
The characters cried at the right moment at the right times.
Simply fantastic.

10/10 - I'm giving a 10 because this is a must-watch Anime.
