THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Heh, I think Gauma is the most entertaining part of this series. He really has that hotblooded personality and unpredictable nature compared to the others. Speaking of unpredictable, I'm guessing monsters in the city can appear at any time so the city is constant danger.

The mecha designs in this anime is taking some time to get used to but are very stylishly designed.

Not going to lie, I think the soundtrack this episode is catchy during the fight scenes.

Masayoshi Ooishi once again delivers an excellent OP, but it'll probably take me some time to get used to it the same way I absolutely loved OxT's "Union" from the get-go. Same with Maaya Uchida's ED as well.

As expected, everyone (except the Kaiju tamer Gauma) is dumbfounded about what just happened. The deal with Gauma and the Kaiju Eugenicists, the storyline is definitely different from Gridman. And when it strikes, it strikes with fluid CGI...maybe too fluid by Trigger's standards to make it imitate the real-life influence to the live-action ones.

Each character here is unique, but what they contribute to the plot is essential...more than just product placement of the mechs (as opposed to using the huge TV as transmission means in Gridman), more particularly: Yomogi. At least Gauma gatecrashing into Yomogi's house is crude, but he keeps things tidy and with respect.

Everyone starting off with various parts of the Dynazenon, which gives everyone a chance to pilot parts of the real thing, well everyone except Yomogi, and this helps out a lot during the Kaiju fights. Aiding to that is the illusive OST that's as prevalent as is in Gridman.

Still gonna have to try out more episodes to get the feel for this one.

Very high production quality but I'm not sure if I can take this anime seriously or not. It seems like Trigger make SSSS just to satisfy their own childhood robotic wet dream (which is a compliment, as doing something with love is better than without love)

But what I'll take seriously is the fanservice, I'll take Gauma and Yomogi bathing together as canon couple.

This shows has some of the best interactions between characters i have seen in a while, they just feel so realistic to me, pretty much already making every character better than most if not all of gridman´s lol. Really like how the city doesnt restore this time around, it makes it so there is a lot more tension. Very interested to see where it goes.

I liked the character interactions more than the fight scenes in this episode. Minami's slowly warming upto Yomogi which is sweet. Also so that was her older sister who died.

The villain group was introduced, they look pretty cool. Specially the girl, she's thicc.

Pretty good episode. I really like the soundtrack for this show. The energetic opening and the ending song are really catchy and, they fit well. Minami starts to open up more. The scenes with Minami and Yomogi were pretty cute. We also got to see the main villain group. The girl has some THICC THIGHS. The fight scene was really good, as expected of the Gridman/Dynazenon series.

Pretty good so far.
It is nice to see Yume opening up to other people, in this case Yomogi. Really enjoyed their interactions in this episode.

Fight was great too. Both robots and kaijuu look really cool. It's great that there are many 2D sequences.

The opening, I feel, has a very nostalgic feel of some of old mecha anime (from the period where mecha was big), also, the music playing during fight being the op theme feels natsukashi too. Initially, I didn't like Minami for lacking feelings and breaking promises, but I've started to like her as she does show feelings now and doesn't break promises now (yeah, lol), and despite not having watched Grindman, I'm looking forward to Dynazenon. Also, the CG fights almost looked like hand-drawn mechas from Gundam series.

Omg that final fight was fucking amazing!!! I love Gauma already. Yomogi is a bit annoying rn, but I’m sure he’ll grow on me as he stops being selfish. I’m looking forward to learning more about the Kaiju Eugenicists and what their goals are. And FINALLY girl with the shorts is here 🤤

Fantastic episode. Really loving the character interactions here. The fight, especially the 2nd part of it, was beautiful. I listened to the opening atleast 12-13 times before watching the actual episode. My only problem with the show is that the animation of the debris looks kinda weak. Also, goddess Mujina with those holy thighs.
For the episode, thicc/5

One of the best second episodes that I've ever experienced in an anime. It runs off the first episode and gives me what I was asking for as a Gridman fan which is having a dynamic to develop from through the group of main characters.

I found the episode to be very enjoyable especially with how it made a solid dynamic between Yomogi and Yume. And the action to be very engaging from how it involves the main characters in the battles. This is a big step up from SSSS Gridman to me.

This one was even better than the first. As I thought, the greatest thing about this series to me is the characters. I really liked the main trio! Yomogi and Minami, tho are a bit generic themselves, have a great interaction, and Gauma is just too funny haha.
Another thing is the great animation/CG. I also liked the direction, colors, and music.
The weakest part is the mecha/kaiju plot till now. Hope that turns into a less generic one. But the action was much better than in the previous ep.

Overall, I'm enjoying it very much (:

Holy shit the thighs of the new girl O.O.... DAMN.

Interesting that unlike Gridman, here the damage caused is permanent. I guess that's what it means when there is no God this time. Also interesting how the OP could also be heard from inside the mecha haha.

I'm surprised Minami is so into this, I didn't picture her that way but it's great, as well as her starting to open up to Yomogi. I loved the whole scene with her friend, from having fun with her to the cutest sneeze... we all knew what was coming and it was adorable <3.

Of course Gauma would go to Yomogi's house, get into the bathtub together with him and stay overnight lol.

I wonder what Chise's role will be, she didn't get a toy but she found one of those weird spheres and in the OP you can see a pair of eyes behind her hmmm....

It didn't do anything particularly good or bad this week, but it didn't particularly do anything really either. It seems pretty content to coast with "melancholic teens being a touch overdramatic, and then one screams about friendship." Shows like FLCL, original version, remembered to have some kind of smaller story in each episode that focused and drove it, or even better, stuff like Garou that told entire encapsulated stories, although those were also frequently about the monsters. Evol is probably the best comparison. Each episode focused narrowly on a member of the team whose development was instrumental in defeating the gimmick of the week. In this one, they, uh, want to train, but one doesn't? But nobody's seriously bothered by it nor does that stymie them in any way, so it's not some conflict or clash between people that leads to any growth or development. It's just white noise of teen angst until a monster finally shows up to stomp around. Not quite so much jumping into the pool of character and story as dipping a toe in and remarking on how deep it looks. Sure, Evol may have been as deep as splashing in the kiddie pool, but it was at least in the damn water.

Which leads us to the monster of the week. It could teleport, which they couldn't defeat by being combined and working together, so they split up… and worked together… and then recombined. Mostly, it was about shouting "I will protect the things I care about." What those things were, not something the show is all that interested in exploring. Why they care about them, see previous. They're sad teenagers versus a cadre of less-sad-but-actually-probably-sadder teenagers. It's not like Uncle Ben died, or they were scared of fighting, or they were having some spat that they overcame, or learned anything about each other aside from the spewed out "My sister died." It's just a random declaration of "Oh, I changed my mind, and I guess I'll try now." Honestly, the most interesting thing at the moment is how blasé the world is taking an invasion of giant monsters, but given the setting, we already know it's because this is all a fake world on the eyelid of the Wind Fish or some rot.

Seems like the kaijus themselves aren't a threat but the kaiju users that are controlling them to cause destruction. Also loved the teamwork and the exploration of the dynazenon abilities during this episodes, really gives a feeling they are learning and growing as characters bit by bit.

Something i don't understand though, is why the kaiju didnt use its warp when he was thrown in the air ? its not like it was restrained in that moment or anything and he had plenty of time before the missiles reach him...

The exact same place, where we first see Yume in the show in Ep 1.

And the same place we she "promises" to met up with boys. Maybe she was suppose to meet up with her sister there in the past and for w/e reason couldn't and her sister died by chance and now she has survivors guilty?

Antagonists had there introduction this episode. From what it looks like they use manipulation to control Kaiju's.

So the Dynazenon can go threw many different combinations. One being Yume and Yomogi's mech combo. Interested to see what the other mechs will look like when fused together.

I'm just nowhere into this show like I was with Gridman. Sure, the real decent stuff in Gridman happened in the 2nd half of the airing, but even then, that show had me somewhat interested still in the 1st half unlike this one. Compared to my high school self when seeing Gridman, I'm long into university now and grew up from thick thighs horniness too so this anime is just leaving me feeling indifferent lol.

I liked the OP (because 1 it's hype and 2 it helps my theory on who Gauma is)

These two items originally appeared in episode 18 of the 1993 tokusatsu series Denkou Choujin Gridman:

01:52 Dynazenon plays its own theme song, its diegetic music! They lowered the volume when the switched the shot from outside to inside the cockpit, brilliant sound design as always. The 2DCG and 3DCG parts blend so well.

03:44 The dialogue in SSSS.GRIDMAN and now SSSS.DYNAZENON sounds so natural and realistic, they even talk over each other. Koyomi and Chise only know each other, so Yomogi talks to Yume while Koyomi answers Chise. Of course, the exception is Gauma, making it clear he is an important stand out character with prior knowledge of Kaiju.

Gauma is well aware who the enemy is, "Kaiju Eugenicists", he claims they are also Kaiju-users like him. The components shrink into toys and he is taking command, organising training sessions to pilot Dynazenon.

05:25 A very important line.

06:01 The difference between this and SSSS.GRIDMAN Kaiju were a multipurpose tool for Akane to shape her ideal world; they could destroy what she didn't like but also create, repair and wipe memories to make it all seamless, like nothing happened. The Kaiju here just destroy and the destruction is remembered with real consequences like transportation problems.

06:23 Chise has kept the Kaiju-egg (I'm going to refer to it as that for now)...

07:09 More insight into Yomogi's life. He'd rather not rely on his mother's boyfriend's money. He wants to earn it himself.

08:12 Why are you interested?

08:58 This reminds me of the Shinji and Misato scene where he finds Pen Pen in the bathroom. Total bro.

11:23 Yume knows there's something wrong with her and is making an effort to change herself, she really wanted to get it out to Yomogi that she has practiced with her component, the Dyna Wing, a sense of accomplishment.
So, instead of access flash + access code. They all pilot separate components of Dynazenon and activate them from small toys using access mode + the name of their component. Yume finally apologised, up in the sky alone with Yomogi.

12:48 That's not a cockpit, that's a squatpit

14:02 "If you always go by the book there're things you can't protect." and then on the train she confirms that Kano, her elder sister, passed away. Maybe she feels the authorities did nothing to stop Kano's death.

So instead of making promises and then breaking them, Yomogi just outright says that he can't go to training. Yet this is probably something he needs to do to protect the city, unlike Yume's dates

I like that the clad-in-white Kaiju Eugenicists look like the opposite of the Neon Genesis Junior High from season 1, who wore black. They use the "Instance Domination" command instead of Alexis Kerib's "Instance Abreaction" command.
Is the character design of Juuga (with the glasses) based on Masayoshi Ooishi, the singer of the OP?

15:46 What Transformer is this based on?

With the wings, I'm getting Gigatron vibes, but the color scheme is from somewhere else.

19:03 Yume is the one making the suggestions on what to do next and Koyomi noticed the wings before warping. Nice teamwork

20:21 Dyna Launcher Burst Missile! Love the Itano Circus technique.

21:54 Gauma confirms his suspicions that the Kaiju Eugenicists are responsible.

This episode just felt messy, all over the place for me. The depth of field was too shallow in some shots, which made the scene feel too 'blurry'. The dialogue between kuudere girl and blue hair boy felt unnatural, the progression of the episode felt jumpy. Kuudere girl and blue hair boy soared through the skies, above the clouds, at high speed, to go from one place to another - reachable by train - within the same city/district?

I don't know, this seemed like a big downgrade from the first episode to me, although the fight scenes weren't bad.

Totally agree. Dyna might be better then Grid if what happens actually matters tho. Apparently this show actually makes the characters deal with the consequences of their fights. Stuff doesn't just regen. Characters/Interaction wise Dyna is looking weak as theres nothing too interesting going on character or story wise atm. Visuals are A1 and everything looks really sharp and true to life. I also like the team dynamic more in Dyna then the superhero friend type relationship Yuta has with the cast in Gridman. I feel like trigger needs to spend more time on trying to develop medium and long term projects. Imagine of Dyna was 24 eps. Characters separate lives could be articulated more thus the characters being more built up. This would also make things better when they got together and started building relationships with the other Dyna members. But hey its only ep 2 so we have to see how this turns out in June. The only thing i never loved about mech anime is that the world is more of a characters then the actual characters that inhabit it.

I guess she got him up in the air so that she could apologize? But that was probably an excuse to do a summoning. I wouldn't say its "Jumpy" as this show is focusing on multiple characters perspectives (in this case Yomogi and cast proper) so it's gonna cut between characters and scenes a lot when they aren't together in Dynazenon.

Everybody here talking about thighs... but can we talk about how this was the Funniest Episode of the whole year?

No, seriously. I find this hilarious, in a good way.

I feel like The characters are better developed here than they were in Gridman, but there are a few reasons why I think that's obvious. In Gridman we had to have Yuuta being the audience surrogate, as strange things happened in that world, and everybody seemed to not notice, yet Yuuta was like "Are Kiju's coming out and destroying the city a normal occurrence?". But Yuuta was more of a plot device than a character, and yet, I knew these writers could make a compelling character because Akane is one of the best-written Villians I've seen.

And here we are. I feel like you don't really need to watch Gridman to understand this, but here you don't have that audience surrogate, and yet people seem to just be living their normal lives while Kaijus appear and wreak havoc everywhere. I love how in the first episode things start floating in the news, and there doesn't seem to be much fuss about it anywhere else.

This show, and this franchise, understands how Utterly Silly the Tokusatsu genre is. It Revels in that silliness, and at the same time, it understands how people act normally. This gives birth to a show like no other, where strange things happen, and people don't react with a "we're all going to die" but with a "sorry, I have work", and it's INCREDIBLY REFRESHING. I mean, we're in the middle of the frikin End of the World right now in 2021, so don't you tell me people don't actually act like that.

It also has really naturalistic dialogue. Many times when there are more than two characters talking, there will be several conversations happening at once, which might seem confusing, but it gives a sense of "real-lifeness" that few things possess. And of course, then there are the robot fights filled with phrases such as "SO THIS IS DYNAZENON'S TRUE POWER" and all the other silly phrases that come with those types of fights, while also having what seem like natural reactions from the more realistic characters, like Yomogi Freaking out when he's inside the robot and this one starts transforming, lol.

So yeah. it mixes those two things very well. And the result tends to be one of the most hilarious things I've seen in anime. But that's just how I react to it

normally i'd complain about these quick cuts but i think they work well with moving the scenes along faster.

still can't get a read on Yume but the mentioning of her sis dying at the flood gates and so casually and still going there raises some questions not to mention she actually showed up for training ironically unlike our boi.

also despite all the char drama i find this super funny in a fun way as a Kaiju show everyone is so chill about the attacks even more so than i remember from grindman

Funny to see people fanservice starved for this show lol. That being said, she does have some really great thighs, I’m sure there’s someone at Trigger to thank for that.

This episode was great too, I’m with some others here on really liking the character interactions, Yomogi and Gauma are a great example. Really like the kaiju fight too, I like that they had to split apart to beat it, it looked great as well. Villains introduction was cool, although I bet they aren’t the only villains. OP is very reminiscent of Gridman, which is great. Still loving this new Trigger show!
