Feel like I want to make a few disclaimers...been a few years since I've cared enough to voice my thoughts on an individual episode.
Couple years ago I made the sudden realization that literally every vampire anime I had seen was startlingly awful (rosavam, vampire bund, seraph, alucard isn't enough to make up for the half baked plot of hellsing), I like bakemonogatari but it's hardly a vampire anime, even if mal tags it as such. Since then I've seen and enjoyed vampire princess miyu (tv) and shiki but even those 2 are kind of niche and hard to recommend. So I've still got a few vampire anime to check out but I've basically got my eye on every new series with the vampire tag. I'm not even that taken with vampires, I just feel like there should be more good vampire anime.
Noblesse from 2020 was kind of meh, but oh, vlad love is coming out this season! And just before I check out the first ep, I catch wind of the fact that it's directed in part by Mamoru Oshii, as well as being his original creation, I think?
So more disclaimers. I knew I'd heard that name as being a pretty big name in anime. And while he's had some sort of role in a few anime I want to check out like blood+ and patlabor, I haven't seen anything that he's credited with on the mal staff page. I also note that Kenji Kawai is credited with the music. And even though most of any given soundtrack goes in one ear and right out the other, he is credited with the scores of at least a few series I liked. Production IG, that's a good studio right?
There's another forum thread about this anime, which you can find on the series page, an interview with Oshii where he talks about (translated and paraphrased) he wants to make something that is different from the modern trends of anime. He wants to make something that is original and distinct as opposed to the bland art/story of most anime.
And I just...
Exactly what? Is this series supposed to do that is so different from anything else in the last few years? A girl has a fixation with blood donation, meets a vampire, gives her some blood, appeals to the absurdly dressed school nurse who suggests she establish a blood donation club so she can get blood to feed the vampire and so the nurse can study blood. So a supernatural girl crashes in some kid's place, and is in some way indebted or attracted to them. Sounds like date a live, etotama, hataage! Animal road, konosuba, monster musume, spice and wolf, sekirei, val x love, dream eater merry. I have more from the shows I've dropped.
I've got a few on my PTW, like invaders of the rokujouma. That one surprised me, the first episode made me feel like I knew a thing about the main guy and I wanted to see how his relationships with the other girls progresses, if at all. I think I even managed to laugh. But who is the vlad love protag who's name already evades my grasp? What's she even trying to do? I guess she wants to take care of the vampire. Who's kind of cute and has nothing else going for her. That's been enough for me in many series before, so I guess this girl doesn't need any more motivation. The nurse is dressed in a ridiculous outfit and is comedically negligent in multiple traits that one would typically judge for a nurse and high school staff. I've definitely seen that character archetype 50 times but I don't really care to look for examples.
I'm left scratching my head as to what anyone saw in this series, same as when I watched the first ep of darling franxx. There are zero vibes in this show. And sometimes, because whether I continue with a show usually comes down to gut feeling, I'm wrong. I was actually planning on dropping demon slayer corps until several little details caught my attention and convinced me to carry on, after which I realized the first episode was great, and I love what I've seen so far. I dropped the first ep of the slime isekai, but after hearing enough about it, I'm willing to give it another chance. I don't see anything like that in vlad love. And my eyesight isn't great at picking up good animation, but I can think of plenty of series that had either high quality stuff or were at least visually engaging. I didn't see anything like that for this episode. And since the first episode is really all you should need to judge an anime, I think I'm gong to go drop it. Except it feels so unassuming and harmless that I could just as well pretend I never watched it.
Oshii directed Angel's egg and even though I couldn't manage to watch it all the way, that is a clear example of why this man might be considered a great name in anime. Vlad love is nothing like it. I feel like I'm stepping on some toes and maybe I'm missing why this man is so well regarded (I'm pretty sure he's well regarded) but jeez he said he wanted to make something distinct? And he made every single high school supernatural ecchi romcom anime that's come out since the genre got its start! He's worked on urusei yatsura? I think this man remade urusei yatsura. |
