THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Heh, I still wonder how well Yuuki can lead a nation with her current skillset. At any rate, we got war and more mecha action. I'm not sure which side to cheer for

Animation quality still looks the same as usual, maybe they're saving the budget for some of the bigger fights later in the show. That cliffhanger though..I expect more casualties down the line.

Damn, I'm really invested now. The death flags abounded, but I didn't think they'd kill Joshua this early. The animation and music's just average (although I liked some of the mech combat), but there's a bunch of interesting directions the story can take. I really like Yuki a lot too, and I'm looking forward to learning more about Stella. They're taking a good approach to worldbuilding with just the right amount of exposition and letting you figure out the rest for yourself.

I picked this one up not expecting too much (I was just curious because of the studio) and it might still end up disappointing me, but I'm hopeful. Curious to see how Yuki approaches the war as her generosity fights with her grief and how much she seemed to enjoy that combat exercise.

It's got a pretty bad score and I dropped it 5 mins in when the mecha showed up. I usually have one drop per season, last time it was space fishing and it's this anime this time.

I like how his death had a meaning and didn't make the first episode pretty stupid.

Why is he even in the banner of the show.

Now seriously. are they trying to make a Loli version of Legend of the Galactic Heroes?

Wait. Matsuoka died? Pardon, his chara just... It's the first time that his... Pardon again, in Re:Zero he died already as crazy mage...

Anyway, this ep. had sure his/her seriousity and intensity, it must for Yuki sure a shock that she did lose her dear-best friend (just I do hope that Joshua somehow coming back...), this will sure her follow...

Well it seems the childhood friend or better said steward didn't last long but he did went out in a heroic way tho.
I have to say tho the fight looked rather convenient as in the withdrawing at the same time and no pursued battle or counter attack.

Anyway it seems the princess learned a lesson which she needed as princess tho not a nice lesson.

We also saw the other main character the one mentioned in the summary and she seems to be an enemy.

I thought all those death flags were just building tension and baiting us for the episode and was confident I was right when he got out and said he wasn't dead yet. And then boom the double bait.

This should be interesting. They actually killed Joshua this early. I mean the opening was focused on the two girls so I kinda figured it was possible.

Damn...that was a gutsy move. One I didn't expect from this show. I figured Joshua would just be the type that'd make it through. Something that seemed likely when he was pulled out after triggering that explosion. But nope, that's it. I suppose the focus has always been on Yuki and Stella in the OP and such but...wow.

Also still not sure how Yuki and Stella are going to cross paths. Yuki's not exactly going to be hanging around on the front lines.

I feel we should be very worried about that girl in the bottom right corner...Anyone sharing his relative position may not be living long. Really this kind of thing is effective to make everyone that isn't Yuki or Stella have a target on their backs.

What the actual fuck? I mean I figured there was gonna be death throughout the story, but THIS SOON and JOSHUA? I'm so sad 😭 he was so nice. I mean, if he was meant to die then I guess it's better they did it this early, so that the pain would be lesser, but still 😢 I was already rooting for him and Yuki 😭 ffs. This sucks. I'm still watching it though,to see if his death is even worth it.

I'm fine with Joshua dying so soon, since it will serve as a fine plot device in Yuki's character development. But I am disappointed that they haven't introduced Stella properly despite it being 2 episodes in already.

I think Yuki will take personal command in the theater of battle, and at one point drive the empire into a corner wherein she captures Stella as a prisoner of war, or you know their paths never really cross.

Better than last episode. Joshua's death came as a surprise. And here I was thinking of him as the main protagonist. That scene actually was pretty sad. Ending theme song is fine.

I don't know, I think it was pretty meaningless all in all. Personally, I think killing off a character is something a writer should only resort to if there's nothing else left to tell with them outside of the consequences of their deaths, otherwise it's just a waste of the audience's time and emotional investment.

On that basis, killing off basically the secondary protagonist of the story so far, when we're still on episode two, is kind of a bad sign as to how much creativity we're working with here.

RIP Youshua, we hardly knew ye.

I still don't understand why he would put him self on the battlefield in the first place. Especially if he didn't want Yuki to see how gruesome war could be. He should have just stayed by her side, they could have let her know about the war, and deal with it from there, but clearly all of her constituents are assholes who don't actually trust her enough to lead or let her in on what's going on outside of the space city until his death, including Youshua. For all of his talk of how much he loved her, he did the cruelest possible thing he could ever do to her, which is rush into battle like an idiot and get him self killed, so that the way she finds about the war IS HIS FUCKING DEATH BED.

Wow, I didn't expect this post to go on for as long as it did. Anyway, the other female protagonist doesn't look as interesting as Yuki, but that's mostly because it seems like her personality doesn't contrast Yuki's enough. Maybe the future episodes will change that, but I think I would have preferred the other princess to be more disaffected and, "Cool." In her archetype.

I can't really say anything about Joshua other than maybe he felt that it was his duty to serve both his country and the princess, quite likely motivated by the death of his father, even at the risk of losing his life. Otherwise, he wouldn't have volunteered to go into battle if he wasn't aware of the risk. He loved her that much and willing to die for her so she could keep smiling.

As for Princess Yuki, keep in mind that she's still child who's been sheltered her entire life. From what we've discovered here in this episode her kingdom is in very fragile state and the last thing it needs is a weak leader. Granted, showing her Joshua on his death bed might not have been the best thing for her, but something like this was bound to happen sooner or later. The harsh reality of the real world has now hit her in the worst place possible so now we must see how she's going to deal with it. Will she rise up to be a real leader, or will she simply fall apart and let her kingdom fall with her?
"You talk too much. Think too much."
"I don't care how justified you think your reasons are. I won't tolerate liars or thieves."
"If you're not going to be nice to me, don't expect me to be nice to you."
"I'm a soldier, not a superhero. Don't ever think of me as one."
"The world doesn't revolve around you. Get that through your thick skull."
"People who live by their emotions go nowhere in their lives. They only find misery.
"If you don't like the way your life is than do something about it instead of sitting there feeling sorry for yourself."
"You want something go get it. Period."

Have just watched the first 2 episodes

Thought this was going to be some typical 'Princess show'...now after episode 2 ,I see why they call it 'The Price of Smiles'.

Let's see if they continue in this vein...

I wasn't sure about this anime before, but now it has my attention. They didn't have to make Joshua so likable, or treat him like the protagonist to start off with just so we can get into Yuki's inevitable motivations for everything she does going forward, but here we are. I hope we at least get plenty of endearing flashbacks of him, I liked him and he is definitely what kept me watching these past 2 episodes. Hopefully his death doesn't make the series less appealing too, instead of really kicking it off.
