Wow, what a sight. The ice and scenery really brings out a feel of realism this episode.

Then, there's the penguins of course. Once again, we got a little more of background storytelling this episode too about Shirase. I also kinda like the bonding between several characters this epsiode. Seems that everyone is dressed up and ready to do some real exploring.

Very exciting!

Landfall at last! But first, a brief shoe-horned in love story and addressing the elephant in the room that is Takako. You know, the show clearly isn't trying to make me think this way but it has done a piss poor job of making her likeable so far. She left her young daughter when it wasn't 100% necessary and presumably died. Great mother right there. Well we still got a few episodes left for the show to get me to change my mind. Meanwhile, what could the mail from Yuzuki's mom portend?

Fantastic episode again.

I started laughin when that guy came up to Shirase and was like Suki desuu. XDD
Shirase's reaction that was absolute gold. xD

We even got a little blush from Gin during the interview, good good. XD

I loved the focus on Gin and Shirase this episode. Their little interactions years ago were really nice to watch and I like how despite Shirase saying she didn't talk to her all that much she still has quite a few memories of Gi and the things she's said to her. I kinda get what Takako meant by wanting to have Gin's spirit rub off on Shirase and I think it really did work out the way Takako wanted it to as Shirase grew up.

The ice breaking stuff was pretty cool to watch.
Were those Takako last words on the radio? :(

All the girls making the jump together was great but the real treat of this episode was of course
"IN YOUR FACE! IN YOUR FACE! IN YOUR FACE! Hell yeah, that was so satisfying and emotional to see. I teared up when the girls shouted it together and even more when the entire crew did it. XD
I really loved how the final scene showcases the girls overcoming all the people who admonished them and called them crazy. Pretty inspiring too.

Wonder what that mail at the end is. :o

After the more comedic episode last week, this was a more feels-y one. More backstory about Gin and how she had more in common with Shirase than she thought.

Got a bit nationalistic there in the middle, getting the rough end of the stick is kinda what happens when you lose a war, especially when you were the aggressor in the first place, but I guess I wouldn't expect any different if it was a show made anywhere else in showing their country in the best light.

The overall message of strength through adversity was well done, especially the "in your face" bit at the end.

I wonder what the email, in the post credit scene, from Yuzukis mum is about?

EDIT: Recieved my OP & ED CDs this morning :-D

Well, considering that every post credit scene till now was somehow "something bad/ominous will happen" and actually nothing serious or as bad as it was shown happened situated, its probably that she just want to congratulate the girls to make it to antarctica.

Let us hope ...

Wow Mari and Hina sure are passionate when meat is concerned. Though im surprised that the confession was actually for Gin and not Shirase. Still never thought that Gin can get embarrassed as well though considering how cool she usually is. The insight into Shirase's childhood and how she interacted with Gin though was pretty interesting as was seeing the impact it had on their lives in the aftermath as well. The analogy of using the expeditions ice breaker to represent Japan's determination to overcome challenges thrown their way was nice. And now they finally reached their target. That last scene though was hillarious. They proved to their detractors that they could get to Antarctica.

The new A Place Further Than the Universe was good. I have a strong feeling that the boy who confessed to one of the main girls will be sacrificed in the plot at some point. The last three episodes are definitely going to be a hell of a thrill ride based on what happened to the character that was lost in Antarctica. I hope it gets Made in Abyss dark, though maybe not as grim. I just wanna see all the girls fangasm over Antarctica for now.

This has, by far, been my favourite episode so far!
I've loved all the previous ones more than I can express with words, but this one takes the cake. Whilst I've shed tears during all episodes, I sobbed at the end here.
Such a beautiful show; it only keeps on getting better.

That message on the end has me worried. I doubt Yuzuki's mother is bearing good news.

Wow, that was a damn icebreaker-sized feels trip. Certainly the "IN YOUR FACE!" part was glorious.

Nice work on developing the relationship between Shirase and Gin and getting more insight into our tsundere captain. I don't have any idea on how will they close the missing mother's issue given that this was one of the starting points of the show... But I can see the feel ship breaking our hearts again. That mail in the end... I don't see anything good coming from it.

The one thing I found unnecessary were Toshio's romantic moments. They could have done without them and still get to the same point. Maybe it was just that episodes 5 to 8 were superb and made me expect every second of the show to be perfect.
The insert sort also seemed a bit out of place at that moment.

What puzzles me is that there are only 4 episodes left and I can't help but to fear a rushed ending or a "to be continued" ending... Which would be great on one hand, but man, I don't want to wait. These anime REALLY needed to be 2-cour...

I won't lie, I even got shivers! but somehow I had an inkling about it, now this is me just theorizing but Antarctica has more country fleets there, like say russia and all if it's like this irl. I'm wondering could Tamiko had found another country fleet? but then again if so, why wait... like why not send an email before to Gin and her daughter??? man it's heating up !!!! and I'm so eager to watch the next pisode

Shirase's "Zama miro!" sounds really, really, satisfying, to the point that i want to cry again.

Seriously, this show, in terms of tearjerking moment, might be comparable to Clannad Afterstory. It's been 4 or 5, i think, where i ended up teary after watching the episode.

Contrary to some of the other users here think, I actually enjoyed Toshio's misfortune in the romance area for him. The poor sod was desperate to try and find a way to warm up to Gin, but to no avail. Hopefully he'll bag himself a girlfriend soon enough. =)

It was also nice to see both Gin and Shirase break the awkwardness between the pair, since she does have regret for not being able to find Takako during the last expedition and hearing her weakening voice through the transmitter about the beautiful sky was powerful. Hopefully now they can talk to each other without worry or regrets. At the same time as that was happening, it was an impressive sight, even in animated form, to see the ice breaker ship constantly smash through the ice in order to reach its destination.

And when the ship made a small pit stop and the girls all jumped onto the frozen ice, Shirase sent shivers down my spine when she shouted at the top of her voice to everyone who doubted and/or dismissed her chances of reaching Antarctica. Then the others girls and the entire crew of the ship also shouted out "In your face!", which made me smile light a million-watt bulb. =D

The only thing that worries me now is the e-mail from Yuzuki's mother at the end. Although most small clips after the end credits haven't been too worrying at all, this one, for some reason, does worry me...

That non-confession at the start... :D

Shirase and Gin are so perfectly in sync, talking to their friends about each other. And so bad at talking to each other. And, really, just so similar.

Even more than Shirase being so good at rope jump, it's surprising how Yuzuki as an idol is so bad at it.

Penguins! The one thing always connecting Shirase and Gin. :D

Well, they finally get to talk, though, as painful as it is for them.

Icebreakers gonna icebreak.

So in a way, the girls' story reflects the history of Japan itself going to Antarctica.

That flashback to Takako being lost...

And we've finally made it to Antarctica! In your face! :D And yeah, seeing how much trouble the whole expedition went through to get even started, I can see why they would join in with the girls on this as well.

I don't think so... The writers would have to come up with a really good reason to justify why she didn't contact anyone in three years.
If done well, it could still go along with the series' message of never giving up. If done bad and done solely for the purpose of a happy ending, it could ruin the show for me.

I wasn't going to comment anything because I didn't want to make a mountain out of a mole-hill. But I'm glad that other people mentioned this as well, it's good to know I'm not alone in that opinion. Maybe I should, as unpopular and out of place it is.

It's kinda funny, the vibe in the middle of this otherwise optimistic show to suddenly inject some history about how Japan was being bullied. I just find that really out of place and passive aggressive, but it was handled really well on their part. It is a fact that they were being discriminated against.

That being said, I just don't like it. And how they spun it to how "they're picking on us, but we're awesome and gonna show them wrong". Good message but like all good nationalistic viewpoints, they're gonna only focus on the aspects that don't make them look like an ass. Which is what they did here, anyone unstudied in history is gonna walk away thinking, "oh damn, poor guys, why are they being picked on." When your country was a collective douche, no-one likes you. But somehow, we, the bullied, are meant to act above and beyond saints and not act hostile against an aggressor who left millions dead and the unbearably obvious lie to 'free the asian countries'. Sounds awfully similar to the US freedom slogans and now look at those countries being helped. Well at least US soldiers are held accountable such as the photos emerging from POW camps and rape cases. Japan had a newspaper printout of which officer could decapitate the most people. Nice.

Totally unnecessary to write in, but since they decided to mention it, just why did they feel the need to pine about being bullied when they raped their way down near to India, committing all sorts of crimes against humanity. Committing live human experimentation, practicing chemical weapons such as bubonic plague on millions of people. Death marches, live bayonet practices, largescale rape, racial superiority impunity, because they're the enemy, absolute cruelty is okay.

The Japanese made the Nazis look like kindergardeners, their cruelty harks back to Genghis Khan. But again, understandable, considering their cultural viewpoint and history teaching, but not acceptable.

I'm not trying to pass the blame unto the current generation, but I'm not okay with them trying to act like they were just being picked on for losing the war e.g. Germans after WWI. It's not that simple.

That being said, having a can-do attitude is awesome, especially once hatreds die down, working together again with one another E.g. JAXA and NASA.
