THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I have to admit, this episode got a bit weird. The investigation led them to thinks albino kid with a strange box.

Honestly, I think the whole case got more and more bizarre with each episode. The higher society also has their own plans. Not sure how I feel about the pacing now but this episode was rather bizarre. More dead people D:

This episode just went off the deep end? Do we have 3 dead characters now, running around thinking they're still alive, or that have changed worlds or something?

This was by far the most interesting episode till date.

There's so much happening around the place and everything only deepens the mystery.
More dead people, Myu's friend was put into some kind of curse box, Gamon listed as dead. Some higher up's discussing the events that transpired possibly hinting that everything was their doing.

Otaku detective is still the best character in the show, I love the way he interrogates people. It's like he talks in a light hearted cheerful mood but at the same time he has some deep insight and questions the person on the most touchy areas straight to the face. His interrogation of the Aria was a prime example with the way he began questioning her psyche and if she really believes in the occult. To top this off the part with him muttering to the so called devil on the road was very intriguing, Is he the one with real occult powers?

The people in the city are affected by something else now. :o

Based on the post credit scene, Is it possible that this entire thing is happening virtually? With the talk of bugs, First generation and other such terms I can't help but think this is some kind of Virtual Reality simulation. The curses could be the bugs they are referring too and you can pretty much relate the characters to something similar along those lines. Every death is probably the bug destroying some cell and the fact that the characters are still alive but are being ignored could possibly represent some kind of loophole in the system. Well, This is just something that I considered, I could be way off here as well.

What. Just. Happened?

Yuta's dead, but still running around like he's alive and well? All this talk about "First Generation" and stuff completely went over my head as well, not least because of the return of the batshit pacing of the first episode.

Wonder what'll happen now that Yuta has been officially named as one of the 256 corpses?

The fuck is this shit???
I'm starting to think they made this anime for torture purposes. I almost got a brain aneurysm by watching this ep.

Ok, they actually confirmed they are dead now, but I still don't know why the fuck and what the fuck is happening here. I don't think they will bring them back to life, and I don't see what meaningful thing could happen next... really...

The whole story seems to be getting more weirder.

So many things confirmed now:
1) Yuta having died; probably Touko, Sarai and Shun as well, if not the entire main cast (except Miyuu); ghosts/souls possibly can see each other, being in the spirit realm, but humans can't perceive them, only experiencing their actions as mysterious phenomena
2) An organisation at work; and their desire for pseudo-immortality, by living on as souls; the situation of our 9 main cast that "survived" the experiment is probably what they are actually aiming for
3) The Inokashira Park Incident being an experiment/clinical trial to work out kinks in the path to immortality, and also to dispose of phase I of the clinical trials; spreading occult ideas through media by the organisation
4) Chi-chan's fate :(
5) Ghosts can still influence physical objects in O;9 lore; not sure if they can ignore physical boundaries though (aka phase through walls)
6) Professor's involvement in the organisation; possibly tried to abort the experiment, and got offed by the organisation to silence him (and to get his research)

Interesting things to note:
1) Shun knowing about Kiryuu (and a whole lot of other stuff; seriously, how does he get his information?)
2) What was the albino boy's intention in handing over the box that easily? (I wouldn't hand over something I had so much trouble building like that, not unless it was part of my goal after building the box) What was his intention in building the box in the first place?
3) Kiryuu seemingly knows Izumin, and Izumin's musings after the gang left to look for the box
4) Assuming the living can't see the dead, this begs the question: who is Izumin? (Living? Dead? Some higher being?) Izumin also seems to be "in the know", which explains his actions somewhat up til now.
5) Remember when the Inokashira Park Incident happened (ep 4)? Remember how the editor-in-chief knew it was a crime, even though it was (and still is) reported as a mass suicide? Remember how he specifically called for Touko to be contacted? He may be another one "in the know" too.
6) The KEY. The GODDAMN KEY.
7) Kiryuu is an odd one, going by my theory that ghosts/souls can see each other but cannot be seen by humans. Kiryuu should now be visible to the main cast, since they are all dead, but that's not exactly happening. Possible explanation: Kiryuu's soul is in a higher plane of existence? Especially since his was more of a voluntary "out of body" experience, rather than death.
8) Miyuu might still be alive, since she can flag a cab to Anmeiji; either that, or her soul is somehow special and can be seen by living humans

That's a lot of info packed in an episode.

Interesting episode. As expected the characters are dead, but Ryoutas is alive and can interact with them, so she seems suspicious. They were killed by a mysterious organization because there were some kind of bugs? And what's with the kid and his box lmao so random. Can't wait for the next ep

All in all: nice episode; finally they reveal part of the deeper setting of the show, which is really what quite a lot of us were waiting for. And I'm thankful they didn't reveal it any sooner, or there wouldn't be any fun guessing.

Sarai getting flustered when Aria displayed her supposed occultic power is priceless, but I hope he remains the calm and collected brains of the group and takes the occult in his stride. Yuta, good job decoding your own name. Shun, enough last questions; you're not gonna impress any girls by being that pushy (though it probably won't matter now). Aria having her brother-complex analysed, definitely no-no. To Miyuu, my condolences: discovering your best friend is now a bloody pulp is not exactly pleasant. Ryoka, probably doing god-knows-what behind the scenes somewhere.

Now where's Ririka?

I think the pacing of this episode was honestly really bad. They introduced too many new concepts that I feel like it's a struggle to connect a lot of the dots lmfao.

Thankfully the information is interesting enough to make me want to watch the next episode. Despite a lot of this shows flaws I just can't seem to leave it alone and I'm actually really interested to get more answers next week. Like this story is put together in a way where I wish they slowed down, but the concept as a whole is interesting enough that my thirst for closure just keeps me interested.

I kind of feel like this is the series you watch in one go, because I had to go back to ep 5 to get why/remember they suddenly started talking about the box.

Really interesting theory. I feel like Ryu-tan or the shop clerk might somehow be involved with them just looking at their relative shifty behavior lol. I don't think the otaku detective is. He obviously knows something but I feel like he's too much of a wild card to be evil- just..chatoic good? lmfao

I feel like the purpose of that was to identify Myu. I'm not really sure why, but maybe he wants her to sacrifice and just needed to confirm it, or possibly just needed to identify her for other reasons.

He seems to care about the case and people's lives so I don't know if he's in league with those rich overloads who were discussing the incident. It's possible he is an occult believer, bc he definitely know something. Then again, I kind of wonder if the editor in cheif was sent to pay attention to the reporter (since her dream seemed to be a premonition of the incident) and maybe cared about her life too much and felt conflicted? idk

Same. I like that he is more skeptical of the occult and random theories, though I think he'd do good not to test people too much. I seriously thought Ryoka might have him gutted on the spot for mouthing off to that extent. I was afraid for his life LOL

This show is really hurting itself by not slowing down. If they had properly paced the beginning scene where they find the shrine and the scene between the detective and the occultic girl, those scenes could've had much more immersion and emotion. But the machine gun talk just ruins it and doesn't let anything sink in. The twist at the end though has me interested enough to watch the next one.

We learned so much in only one episode. The pacing is still very fast, but I think it's intended because I remember all the scenes. Since the beginning, I knew this anime was hiding something and now that it's reveled, it became so interesting.
The detective seems to be alive and dead at the same time.

No, the Science Adventure series is a series of visual novels developed by 5pb. and Nitroplus. There's Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, Robotics;Notes, Chaos;Child, and Steins;Gate 0. Only those occur in the same universe.

1000% plot :O geezus.

Most of the cast is dead as expected, but it as the doing of a origination not the occult.
The bugs they mention are the ones who are interacting with the real world in real time, the radio voice is probably ryo-tas.
But the white psycho kid and demon guy shouldn't' be part of that, they are separate factors I think.

The murder curse box was brutal, poor Chi-chan :'(
The white psycho boy is alive, probably controlled by a spirit.
Detective Shota rekt brocon spirit girl so hard XD holy sht.

Man the pacing is inconsistent. One episode will be decently paced and then the very next one will be like this. However, I still got the gist of what happened in this episode, with that weird organization being the cause of the 256 deaths, and Yuta apparently being one of those deaths. Although I still have many problems with this show, I'd be lying if I said I'm not interested in what'll happen next.

The secret organization is trying to preserve soul to gain immortality of humanity, but has problem of "the cage of time",Which I think is souls doesn't have same flow of time as reality or souls 's time just stopped the instance they die.

So the organization killing 256 people and experimented on their souls. And the experiment succeeded,i guess? Since their souls(main characters) is in sync with reality.

The bug that organization speak of maybe are those main characters~

The last girl in the end scene may be the only living people that are helping the main characters(dead one) to be set free from organization/reality?

There are still the mysteries of the white boy and the Boys love' s prophecy book...XD

For example the reporter (or whatever) girl who was ignored by her coworkers didn't have a reflection in the "glass" or a window. The young detective guy was ignored today too (not only by his co workers but also the out of body "devil" guy heard him but couldn't see him while in his physical body). And Gamon is Gamon, he's hearing some girl talking to him from a freaking radio lol. They're probably all dead lol except maybe the "medium" ones but they don't seem to realise the others are no longer alive.

Well, that talk about "bugs" was strange though so we might get an other twist later on.

Yeah, They probably know something. The radio voice could be Ryo-tas as well. The exact number of 256 deaths is also quite intriguing since it's a common number for computer storage, It could mean something like an entire memory block was wiped out or something. Then again I guess I might be over analyzing this stuff.
Chaotic good is quite the fitting description for the Otaku detective. XD

Interesting episode. Though I'm suprised to see several people mention how the main characters seem to be souls in sync with reality- to me it seemed to be the opposite. Our main characters, the titular "occultic nine", are most likely the "bugs" the guy from the organisation talked about. After all, he said they were lucky that the bugs didn't reach double or triple digits- meaning there were fewer than ten (and I hope I don't have to point out that 9 < 10).

It also explains why some of them seemingly have supernatural abilities (even though the meeting scene seems to imply that the occult/supernatural isn't actually real, but rather advanced (pseudo-)science, but the general populus is made to believe otherwise). It's because they are out of sync with reality- they are anomalies. In fact, most of the special abilities that some of the main characters have seem to relate to telling her future (Ririka through her doujin, Miyuu as a medium, Gamon through the radio voice, which I suspect might be himself from the future).

There might be some crucial fact that I overlooked, and even if I didn't it would still leave a lot of questions unanswered, but I'm fairly certain that my theory has at least some truth in it.

they are all dead it seems. thats why no one replies to them at the end and their coworkers and family are all out of it and crying. also just realized that in episode 4 when the megazine chick arrived at her job everyone actually ignored her, thats cause they didnt see her. she was a ghost. just go back and watch that part. they obscured it pretty well. but they seriously talk right past her the entire time.
at the end of the scene it sounds like the boss tells Sumikaze to go look. but apparently he told the other guy (who also reacted to what the boss said) to look for Sumikaze. cause apperently she didn't show up on the emergency meeting. that sentence could be precieved in 2 diffrent ways. pretty smart of them throwing us off like that.

at the end of episode 3 Gamon ran into a demon in the streets, and woke up in his room after dreaming of drowning. that was on the morning after the mass drowning.
in episode 4 in the park Miyuu also talks about a dream wich appears to be about her drowning. both cases where only shown in a flash so obcured pretty well, but now they start making sense.
this is getting rather interesting

This show is a fucking disaster. 6 episodes in and the pacing is so fast you have to be a speed reader to keep up with the subs. I understand parts of whats going on but I don't really care.

Nothing at all 'interesting' in this episode as people claim, just another clusterfuck of an episode. I actually think this is the first show I could rate 1.

Good luck Aniplex shifting their overpriced shitty box sets of this series

damn I really wasnt expecting that. I slowly started to realize what was going on after Shun was able to see Kiryu (the 'devil'). So the 9 characters are part of the 256 victims; It appears other people are unable to sense their existence; the exception to this rule appears to be the trans cafe owner guy.

We're also finally getting some answers to WHY these events are happening >>> some organization is developing a "New World System" to achieve eternal life by connecting to the spirit realm; and Hashigami's research gave clues on how to do this (and somehow Nikola Tesla is involved??). And the 256 were actually test subjects for their experiments, who they had to kill get rid of evidence.
