Yes, I'm waiting for a subbed version too.

The Funimation video portal is down AGAIN(!) so relying on their "legal" service has become a complete waste of time.

And good lord please don't refer to Ein/Elen as Eren.

The day they romanized Elen as Eren, I gave up on Funimation and started watching Neko and Inferno's subs.

Funimation just fails no matter how hard they try.

No subs as of yet... it's been a few days, but Funi's still down and no fansubs seem to have surfaced.

The new Reiji I can only describe as Pimp!Zwei. As with the end of the last episode, he's got a suit, a pink shirt, hip-hop theme music, and even a seemingly subservient woman. Somehow, I just expect that he's going to be dumping Claudia, though.

Also, we finally meet Cal! I didn't catch the deal with her sister Judy, but for whatever reason Zwei seems to have her in.

However... am I imagining things, or was that a glimpse of Ein in 13:50? Wish I could remember more about the gun types to verify the possibility, but it seems likely.

Overall, not the best episode (though a fairly awesome opening) but hopefully with the introduction of Cal we'll see some more great Phantom in the future.

I noticed. What the heck has Funi been doing all this time? So much for "within 24 hours of Japanese broadcast." I always thought that if they could clean up their sub quality they could have some serious potential in someday providing an international legal alternative to fansubbing, but this is VERY disappointing.

I think it's funny episode 10 is not up. They had it up at one point, all the "thieves" had already gotten it from the leak. What's the point of taking it down?

To add insult to injury, Funimation has now decided to include a region blocker for the video streams so, as I'm resident in the UK, I can no longer watch Phantom or indeed any other show on their site (although as others have already pointed out they have not updated the new shows for a while now).

And they wonder why fansubs are so popular with internet Anime fans....

Watching fansubs is the only way for me to watch anime. Waiting for someone to import it, or to license it and add Norwegian subtitles will take forever.

You're right! Didn't even think of that... and it really shouldn't be an issue now that ep. 10 has long finished broadcasting. It was subtitled and everything... so why?

I wouldn't feel too bad about it. Like you said they haven't updated the shows for two weeks now. The site is "down for maintenence" so often now when I go to check it's probably offline more than it's up now. Since nothing is ever any different after these "maintenance outages" the site is rather useless now.

True, but they still keep sending C&D letters to fansubbers and their servers. If you live outside North America (I'm not sure if they block Canada or not) and want English subtitles, this is basically like being flipped off and told that anime is only for Americans and Japanese.

Now, had they left it without a region blocker they could at least argue that they were making subtitles accessible to the English-speaking world, thus providing some sort of justification for the C&D demands. In the end, however, they have decided to restrict access, nullifying this claim. Stupid move on their part, too, as far as I can tell. They could probably set up markets in places like the UK with relatively little investment seeing as they're already making English-language products. They'd need licenses and a factory for Region 2 DVDs, and that's probably just about all.

If you live in an area you can't view the streams, I would imagine it is because you live where Funimation does not own the licensing rights to the series in your country. However, this also means they do not have the legal standing to make C&D demands or sue people, as they do not have any legal backing for controlling distribution in your area. IANAL, but this is logical advice, and it's how Underwater operates.

But that's exactly it, they don't own the rights outside of North America. However, they still send C&D letters to English fansubbers who may operate outside of the US, and they still threaten legal action against servers hosting fansubbed content. They don't necessarily have to own the copyrights in foreign regions, they just have to have an intimidating team of lawyers who can pull off a convincing enough threat.

just signed up to see if i could those out side of North America,

"(I'm not sure if they block Canada or not)"

if the location restrion is still up, then they haven't block Canada

if u live out side North America all you have to do to bypass funimation's ip restriction is download and use a program called 'Hotspot Shield' it will give you an ip address from the U.S. it also lets you watch site like Hulu if they have restricted you from their site as well. hope that helps.

Funimation titles are available in the UK but through third party distributors - i.e: Manga, MVM, Beez etc. Whether that is the rationale Funimation is working on to justify blocking UK and European regions is open to interpretation but since these are Funimation licensed titles but distributed through someone else, surely the difference is purely semantics?

Anyway, I agree with the above poster: I too am getting withdrawal symptoms and as flawed as Funimations' streaming was, it still gave me a way to watch the show.

Unfortunately, I live in Australia, and all the "free" services- whether it's Funimation's streaming or Gonzo's (such as Welcome to the NHK which Gonzo re-aired for free), we always miss out. We don't even have a bloody company which has licensed those titles (maybe, I haven't checked), so I don't see why we should be blocked. Madman entertainment (probably our only distributor in Australia) doesn't do jack.

PS> And we don't have any Australia-based fansub groups either. Everytime an episode is subbed by Funimation, I have to rely on the kind souls who would re-upload them onto a site without regional restrictions.

Interesting... I wasn't aware of this. Though it makes i all the more bizarre that they're blocking UK and European regions.

Also, Phantom ep. 13 is airing right now. We have gone exactly one week without any translation for this excellent show (albeit the unsubbed in question, ep. 12, kinda sucked IMO).
Not that we can really blame fansubbers... they're not paid and reap very few benefits (and sometimes actually lose money) for their work. That said, I don't understand why no one has done it. I haven't heard of any huge Funimation push, so....
Though who we really ought to be asking is Funimation itself. Again, not like we have any inalienable rights to it from them either, but it's still odd.

Good(?) news: Funimation has finally updated FMA: Brotherhood to episode 12. In the most optimistic of possibilities, this means that a subbed Phantom may be soon to follow. Crappy "Eren"-using subs, yes, but subs all the same.
(and though the streaming would still be North America-only, if Funimation does stream it, a thousand or so groups will steal the subtitles and torrent it off)

MadMad only really has FMA Brotherhood up on there site at the moment. It would be nice if the could get more up because Funimation being blocked is annoying.

It would be nice if there was an Australian based subbed group. I was just thinking that the other day wondering if there where actually any out there. I even considered starting my own one for a couple of hours but I wouldn't be able to translate anything because I don't understand Japanese and not sure of the actual work that goes into subs.

I am also going through withdrawal symptoms checking every few hours of every single day for the last week in every sub group listed hoping that episode 12 is up.

While i thought it was pretty good, i still liked the "ein/elen" arc much better so far. I don't see how this little blonde girl is going to replace her, nor do i think a zwei that doesn't care about anything at all is an improvement over the old one.

Oh, rest assured. Zwei will begin to care ALOT very quickly (ep13). And Cal (the blonde girl) will be awesome in her own right.

Game players tend to agree that the second arc is superior to the first. You won't have to wait long.

Or maybe that was someone similar, and they are just playing with us a little. :] I hope we won't have to wait for 13th episode this long.
