THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- It is really basic as far as story, characters, and themes are concerned. Still, it has nice visuals and it was an entertaining watch. |

Agreed. Had great animation production values, but diluted characters and story - very bland & trite. |

Bad imo. Story was really weak, the characters were just stupid especially the main character who is some annoying pussy who was the " chosen one", yet didn't do jack shit until the very end so it felt kind of asspullish. Music was also boring to listen to and it sorta feels like princess mononoke but a lot crappier. On top of that in general it was so painfully boring it felt like it took a day for it to be over. I'm so glad I bought this for only a dollar at a video store. 3/10 |

The movie was very good until it lost the plot towards the middle, with the whole oni also have a good reason to fight. The oni had spiders for heaven's sake and they killed anyone including innocent people in the capital. Also Tendo didn't make a good MC, he was conflicted and didn't seem like a chosen one to wield the orochi. The orochi was too big for him. I'm surprised at Raiko to become friends with a guy that left him to die. 6/10. |

I thought Mizuha had a VA that recognizable on my hearing However, i was wrong. Its different than i thought. Lol. Well, in my honest opinion, in my first impression, the show served as a good twist. While the monk guy, Gen'un, served as a real villain, then the 'oni' was a good side that needed to defend themself from the danger of Gen'un greediness. Other than that, its basic just served the usual cliche plot, classic MC's personality, generic storyline and direction. The idea of a time travel somehow just feel weird in the first place. But its okay when at the end the explanations had its good terms. This is not a bad movie, i found it pretty decent and enjoyable when everything happened. Still its not that great either. Well, to sum it up, i just short it out everything that i need to tell into this one: Story: Yes, its generic. Good versus bad side, while my MC boy need to decide which one was the right one. At the end, its changed a lot when the boy met the girls and pretty much changed it at once. Yes, its an obvious clicheness. Because afterall, the bad side finally revealed himself, and everything concluded in a fast way. Ofc its same with the development of the boy. I found it not so great, either its not that bad. Its fine. Honestly, it will be so good if the boy just stay there and not coming back to his present. Well, when everything started with a bullshit, why ended it up with a normal ending? Lets stay it with another bullshit, and thats happening. A happy end at your services, with the only bad thing was Mizuha's still intact in Raiko's side. This is the only thing that far away with a clicheness. Nice, 1 point up for the story section. 7/10 Art, animation, design character : all of them were okay. The battle sequences used some goof terms to alocated the right amount of animation. 7/10 for all matter on this movie. Sounds departement kinda generic. Its a 6/10 afterall. Characterization : This is hard. The boy MC held some negativity with his first appearance, and never got a good development until the final blown. So, at my understanding, his characterization was just so bad that the movie couldn't rely it into its potential. Everything just turned into a classic MC that could turned the table pretty fast, and easy to predict the outcome. Unfortunately, the same condition goes to the side characters too. No great impact with their relations, conversation, even its interaction. The whole decision its served to plotting only with no actual progression among their characterization. Everything just come out with non-existent. Oh, well, 5/10 for this one. Even the girl had zero development in the end by staying her alive and no last impact lines on her. Yeah, 5 just too generous score from me. Enjoyment is 7. If only the story could span into more detail, and try to explained what happened in the future and the past after the event, it would be much better. Overall scores is a mean rate over every score sections. Like i said, i think this movie had a lot of potential, but ended up with a generic direction, classic end, and a cliche MC. However, its not so bad, i had some good moments, especially when Gen'un changed his appearance. So, its a 7/10, then. Its goes like that just for the sake of my respect at their valuable historical theme on its approached of their story telling. Its sounds so good to me, about the whole origin story with the great war of oni and human, that started because of the greediness of one human. A nice twist of their storyline about the bad and good thing that quite surprised me in the first sequence. Its a good job, to be honest. So, yeah, its seems matched up on my personal enjoyment. A pretty good one to me. |

Really didn't like this one, one of the worst anime movies I've watched in recent times. Just reminded me of a bad Naruto filler arc. Also maybe if the "good guys" didn't want to be called Oni or be seen as the bad guys, maybe they shouldn't have dressed up as scary monsters and went attacking the nobles and terrorising the towns. I also don't know what the difference between the Oni and the "regular" people were. Like the monk dude recognised when an Oni came within the barrier, how did he know that? From what I could tell they were just regular dudes and he took their land, probably missed something important in the exposition dumps but who knows. Though on second thought, I guess they were magic users and could float and do other witch craft, I'd also be scared of them if I'm being completely honest. Don't know why they seemed to be the only ones able to do that, besides the monk I guess, but I would've thought of the monk being able to do magic as normal in this kind of movie. I fail to see why the monk transported the main character into the past or how the girl/Oni got out of the future as the Oni said they didn't have the power to bring people back into their world. I also wanna meet the dude who was in the big spider mask, as the other Oni's "battle armour" seemed to just be a mask, so who was riding in the big mecha-spider? Overall thought the main conflict of the main character dude not knowing what side to choose/trust kind of pointless when the one side was revealed to be the 'all evil dude who wants to conquer the world and become a god' at the end just so he can make up his mind and you know for a fact that he made the right choice. In my opinion it would've been better if the monk dude wasn't all evil and had a noble goal but was going about it the wrong way or something cheesy like that. Also time travel plots make my brain go ouchy, so I'm not even going to try and think about the ending as with every time travel plot, you just accept it. Even if the mc probably made the wrong choice in changing the past and inevitably changing the present as we saw in the ending. Hope he regrets it later when there's no Wi-Fi anymore (really wish they showed whether he had bars or not at the end scene). There were other things that I didn't get or thought were dumb but I'm too lazy to think about this movie for any longer. Feel like this movie was for people who are into Japanese folk-lore and history but I'm not knowledgeable on it so I probably didn't get some aspects of this film. If anybody comes across this post and wants to explain some things to me, go ahead, I welcome being enlightened. |

This felt like an off brand knockoff of Anime. As if it had been made in China or Malaysia or something. The Animation wasn't awful but it just didn't look overly great at times. The character designs weren't to my taste, a little overly simple. Almost like they were designed for CG rather than 2D. The story is very basic and not the least bit original. We've seen countless versions of a tale like this and this one did nothing to really stand out. Still it felt to me as if portions of important background info or just general explanation for why things were happening just got straight up missed out. As if they had been left on the cutting room floor to help lower the running time. I do feel as though, even if the story is somewhat generic, that we needed more character building, world building and just a more steady progression of story. The whole film is really rushed. Like yes we know where it is ultimately going after awhile but similarly I wasn't invested because I didn't spend enough time with any of the characters and the world to really care about anything. Like why should Jun care so much for Raiko? he barely spent more than a day with him, It just didn't feel genuine at all. As @DancingTheBa says this really does feel like a Naruto Filler Arc. And in the same way that none of those really mattered I don't feel like this film does much either. Also agree about the convenient villain making any choice much easier for Jun. This is something that Princess Mononoke managed much better with it's "villain". Painting Gen-un as just straight up Evil doesn't make for much of a conversation come the end. Overall I thought the film was a missed opportunity, if only in the sense that a good film is there even if it wouldn't exactly be anything too special. With extra fleshing out of characters and the world, along with some changes here and there I think this could have been solid. And honestly I didn't hate it. It's not good but I didn't think it was terrible either. Mostly just mediocre and I don't feel like I wasted 98 minutes, I mean it's honestly hard to really waste 98 minutes on anything and feel like I truly regretted it. 5/10 from me, it was Mediocre. |

The complaints about it looking "bad" are ridiculous, the animation is gorgeous and fluid without tainting it with ugly 3D, it's an achievement (and a testament to the skill of animators involved, like Hirotsugu Itoh and Hashimoto Shinji). Storywise it's more complicated than people give it credit for (and neither it's about man vs nature for god's sake), although it doesn't deliver on its themes as much as I'd like it to. So what are the themes? Well, it seems to me that the story is alluding to the conquer of the Ainu people and their lands by the Kyoto government back in those days. Even the monk makes a statement about his political goals and whatnot, and there're some passing notes about the aristocracy here and there. Now, I'm pretty disappointed that barely anything got explored further - the monk is defeated, everybody is happy? What about the lands? What about the other aristocrats? Eeeeh. Good idea tainted by imperfect execution. Returning to animation, I wish to reiterate that it was great, but the too complex camerawork was often unnecessary (e.g. those rotations), and might have worsened the experience for some. In any case, I don't regret watching the movie despite its flaws. |

Short anime movie so you can guess about how the quality is if you’ve seen one before. Really good sakuga moments and then really rushed story exposition. Very predictable . Soon as i saw a certain oni i immediately guessed where the plot was going to the letter. Having your mc just flail around for an hour straight is a weird choice. He just stumbles around scared and being berated by everyone for not picking their side even though they asked for him to be there . Also if they can travel to any point in time for a descendant of nobility why not get a descendant with a little more gusto and not some random nerd? Made zero sense to me. The main character really felt tacked on. We get to the 3rd act and the person that summoned him for “help” is so strong he doesn’t even slightly need the help. The story seemed to be setting up for making two hardheaded sides see eye to eye again and come together . Like we were made to see both sides. And then the “villain” goes so hard super generic villain and while the mc is giving him the benefit of the doubt he just says no im evil i did all this evil stuff and i don’t even like you guys like that actually. Like where did all that come from and why?? Movie set up a rival character that’s way too cool and supposed to be the coolest ever just to stick him inside a big wooden monster and take him out the story for the rest of the movie. Just really weird decisions in that third act that make it so boring . Second act isn’t much better . Shoulda got a training arc at least . |
