Wasn't that spectacular to me.
The ending was okay, but considering how many times I got bored... I'll give this series a 6/10

Looks like he died as expected.. but meh.

I dislike open-to-interpretion endings in general and this is no exception. I think it would be better if he died.

The author stretched the story longer than what I would've liked. How many times do they have to cry and say they love each other? I did not care much until Kou started having that headache. I think everyone knew what was going to happen after that. I was interested in the possibility of Takuma receiving the transplant and everyone going "aahhhh that's Kou heart". But it didn't happen :(

There's not much to say about this series...

( haha.. i NEED A HAPPY ENDING! my heart just can't take sad endings.. hahaha) and it seems that he died or something (meaning sad) so.. nevermind haha...

I'm gonna go a bit against the grain here and say that, although it would be easier to have a clear ending, the ending intentionally left ambiguous actually works better for this particular story. You can view it as reality, what Takuma dreamed would happen, what Mayu was envisioning happening...

Its almost like the end of The Giver... you put your own interpretation into the story. And I think that for a story like this, where you have so many people hoping the treatment worked, so many people hoping for the "realistic" harsh reality ending... I think having it end this way allows you to put your own spin on the story and decide what you think makes sense.

I think... he lived. But I think the future she shows us isn't necessarily what really happens, but what Takuma's dream was, hence the black background on all the pages. That would account both for the "dream like" drawn feel of the final few pages while making it extremely plausible he lived.

I like the manga in general, just because the ending wasn't to my standard, I liked the entire thing.

Oh if you have read the manga and liked it, I wouldn't suggest watching the live action one, unless you want to cry cause it sucks. (and its pretty sad, I actually couldn't bring myself to finish it)

I really loved this manga! I would still rate this 10 even if Takuma died but he didn't, so..yay! XD

The story really moved me and this is the only manga that affected me so much that I cried. It made me appreciate my life and to thank God that I was born healthy and that I should do whatever I can because I'm lucky enough to have the ability to. I'm just wondering what happened to Kou-sama and the others. It would've been really nice if there's a story about them in the end as well.

It's not a cliffhanger ending.

If he had died, it would have been a completely straight line. It never showed a flat line on the ECG, which shows his heart has stopped. What it DID show was his heart beginning to beat normally again, illustrated by the steady wavelengths on the ECG monitor plus a heart rate of 83, showing his heart had recovered.

Sure, the zoomed in part faded into white. I suppose that created slight ambiguity, but not strong enough in my opinion.

Also, the manga-ka built up suspense on who the father of the children was, then revealing Takuma, which just further confirms that he lived.

Even the manga-ka confirmed he lived in her interview.

So yeah, it's actually not an ambiguous ending, pretty cut and clear.

NB: In case some of you didn't get it, the pictures of Mayu swimming, being pregnant, getting married, their kids etc. at the part where she read the will was what actually happened, not a dream.

It's an open ending to me. One of my favourite shoujo manga though simply because the story is somewhat different. The thing I find irritating about shoujo manga is the constant hurt and tears but this manga was okay for me.

How is it predictable, when we cannot even agree on wether Takuma died or not? I think the ending is very "japanese spirited". Japanese poetry is the same... it is full of ambiguity, its suggestive, and leaves things to interpretation.

However, I am inclined to think he lived. The blank space between the surgery and the family scene is what we call in literature: Active Space (although I do not know if the term exists in English... I am translating it literally from the spanish term we us to make reference to a blank space in a story or novel which has meaning on its own. This space marks the passage of time, or the change of scenery. That´s why I thing the last scene actually happens, sometime in the future.

Then again, there are also arguments against my interpretation. But I think that ambiguity is what makes this manga different from others.

I didn´t mind the tears... tears in a situation such as the one portraid in the manga are justified and natural. Perhaps I would have made the characters laugh as well. The truth is that, even those of us who have a dying relative of friend forget at times, and we live happy moments. There are happy moments in the manga, but even such moments are tainted with sadness.

Anyway... I liked the manga. There are two scenes I found specially good, and made me cry... the one of the diapers, when Takumi is still a kid, and the one in which he takes a "happy" picture for his funeral, on the date of his birthday.

5/10. Some moments were good, Takuma and Mayu's relationship was cute, but otherwise, it wasn't that great. Many moments were pretty annoying and repetitive to be honest.
And, I don't understand why some even doubted about this ending, it was clear he survived :O

A story has no beginning or end; arbitrarily one chooses that moment of experience from which to look back or from which to look ahead.

I'm going to assume he survived and those dreams were fulfilled. I think he ending was ambiguous in some ways but definitely not...(cough) predictable. Shame we didn't get to see an image of Kou in the finale chapter despite what he's been through also.

7/10.

Normally, almost all of the time for any sort of drama, anime, manga, story with an ill character and an ambiguous ending, I think they died.

But I feel almost positive he lived, because the author tried to make it seem like he would die, from making the EKG fade, to the dark bed of clover that could be interpreted as a covering for a grave, which then turns into a hopeful scene: the clover field . Then she blanks out the man's face until the very last page. She could have ended it WITHOUT showing his face, (or even at the EKG machine fading out) and that would definitely be a truly ambiguous ending. But she decides to show the last page with Takuma, to "shock" the readers (because, let's face it, the majority of us thought he would die). Thus, the ambiguity of who the man is, is gone, and he is alive.

It was just like when Kou started having headaches right at the time they announced Takuma would need a transplant. IDK about others, but I was like WOW... how predictable, he's going to get Kou's heart, and sure enough, Kou collapses. But then he doesn't end up getting it, even though everything is set up that way. I feel the ending is set up in a similar build up, then surprise twist result.

Everything is set up so that you're so positive Takuma will die, then in the very last picture they show his face. Having him live is actually the unpredictable ending IMO (and based off this manga and other works by the author, she really loves putting in these random twists in the story, when you feel sure that something is going to be cliche and predictable, then bam, there's a twist).

I think he's alive.

Well, IMO Kou was the best character in this manga... I liked his girlfriend a lot too. Geez, just when he moved on... I knew what was going to happen since I watched the live action first, but I was sad anyway.

I don't really ~love~ shoujo and even tho I read it in two days I was rolling my eyes several times. There were times they were too immature even for high schoolers and argh... too many chibis.

There were really heartbreaking moments that were ruined by the overuse of chibis.

Well. I gave it a 7, but I may change it later. Not sure.

I think that ending was way too abrupt. I'm so confused since it wasn't a clear ending. I either wanted to cry my heart out or jump for joy by the end of this. Being in between the too just sucks. I feel quite sad that I wasted my time on something which doesn't have any real closure.

It was boring, I would give it 4/10. I hate the fact that the author just far-stretched the story for so long when it could easily have ended in just 20-25 chapters. There are a lot of cliche and cringy scenes too like when the male lead points Starting pistol towards his head in public and broad day light yet somehow only female lead manage to see him. Like I know dude you are depressed and all, but please try to control your edgeness.

-and the generic love triangle scenario. When Mayu starts going out with Kou dude and they start kissing each other, I felt really weird about that. It was like watching those NTR that leaves bad taste and I laughed when he breaks up with her or she breaks up with him which all happened in the background. It ended abruptly and felt unnecessary. This is why I hate LTs in shoujo because it just feels too damn unrealistic some handsome guy out of nowhere falls for the female lead, I prefer my Kare Kano, Mars and Lovely Complex which are free from such cancerous elements.

-As for the ending, so much build up and it ended it like that. Although, I know for sure that the guy died because of the ECG and the live action move too has a sad ending.

I'm going to go against what seems to be the majority opinion and say that this manga really sucked. First, I don't like how Kou's end wasn't fully elaborated (did he ever wake up, if not - how long did he remain brain dead before passing away?) although I don't mind that the main couple's love story remained ambiguous. However, I felt that the writer did a really poor job in tackling serious issues which would come off as really insensitive for people in those situations.

The drama felt contrived and the writing was poor. For example, the fact that Mayu was sexually harassed was almost completely brushed over - just to give Takuma a "hero" moment. The boys involved in pulling off her swimsuit were never addressed afterward. Even if they never received punishment - as most cases never do in real life - I would have appreciated if the writer took some time to depict Mayu as mortified by the event rather than rush into the romantic encounter in the infirmary. Furthermore, the use of side characters like their parents and Teru-chan were all cringe-worthy at best. I could've used my time better reading something else.

5/10 for an unrealistic drama and genuinely unlikable couple. Fellow readers may not agree with me but that's okay. We're all entitled to our own opinions and I, for one, prefer to have standards.
These faces are so cute that I might just leave them here (#`Д´)´∀`)・ω・) ゚Д゚)゚∀゚)・∀・) ̄ー ̄)´_ゝ`)

I'm really confused here. I finished the manga, and looked up if Takuma died, and it seems like the majority says Takuma lives. But I read the Wikipedia article on the Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu movie, and it says Takuma dies. So... is he dead or alive?

I enjoyed the manga. It was bittersweet and brought tears to my eyes. But I felt the ending could have been written better. I was confused at first whether Takuma died or not, and although PP had all the evidence that pointed to a happy ending, I actually thought a sad ending would be more realistic (so sad lol). But I'm still glad he lived so I'm ambiguous on whether I like the ending or not. But this is perhaps the best ending for fans.

I didn't mind the tears and crying because, hello, the person you love is dying. One particular thing I especially like is that, all the characters are likable (except maybe Teru). I especially like Kou and am so sad that he's the one who died, which I did not expect at all until the car accident. There's no single villain-- the only villain was time/the heart disease.

Looking at the last several panels, i fully believe that he survived and it was a happy ending, i heard the movie has a sad ending, but there are hundreds of series where the manga and film adaptations have different endings. And there was some comments below that said the author said its a happy ending and he survived, I personally haven't checked for that quote, but i'm choosing to believe with the panels as proof.
