THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Only Oshii would have references to Truffaut in an anime episode. You have my respect, Inu-san.

Indeed. Hearing Jacqueline Bisset's name in an anime (and seeing her drawn in it too) was slightly surreal.

The bit with the cat that wouldn't drink was pretty funny.

LMAO. That movie is pretty hilarious, accompanied by the sound efx, Im really laughing how messed up the production was already and how terrible their movie is(if you could call that a movie). I feel that guy shouting in the end, I was asking the same thing. Great episode for me, gave me some pain in the jaw.

It's BACK!

14:53 Did they really have to take it from the top? So long as the tray didn't move, they could've kept their first shot of Mai leaving the tray by the door and do new takes from that.

19:59 Oshii, you madman

Sure it's hard to make a movie, but well at this point xDD the many movie references were great.

The film story was simple, but a lot of fun hijinks. It looks like Saki was trying some weird auteur art-style film which made sense to her alone.

The nods to film history, eg the MGM logo with Oshi's dog and the Day for Night title, were nice to see.

"Because that is what's demanded of a director"

Who would know better than Oshii. He's also based enough to make movies regardless of whether the masses would understand them or not.

A little trip into film history and the difficulties of making a film

The funniest episode in this show yet. I didn't think all of it was funny but Chihiro blowing up her scooter, the cat not drinking the milk and just the final scene of Bamba just shooting Katsuno made me lose my shit.

Also, does anyone know why they keep censoring mushroom clouds ? Is it not allowed in Japan ?

So the opening this episode was referencing Tomino's openings for "Turn A Gundam" and "Brain Powerd", among others. And we got back into Oshii reusing UY routines, with Maki playing Megane. (But UY did Felini movies, not French New Wave".)

All-in-all, a great episode!

How exactly? I'm not sure I see any references to Turn A (idk about Brain Powerd) in this show's OP, unless I'm missing something? Although we have Romi Park playing a role here, which is nice.

Idk in what sense do you think Maki plays Megane but I noticed a few animation callbacks to UY in earlier episodes with "Megane mad laugh" (from Jinko, though). As for Fellini, Oshii paid homage to his "8 1/2" in his "Tetsujin 28 1/2"
