More aerial combat except this time, we got to see some action from the guys too.

They tried to make the battle look as dramatic and some ways, it kinda works. However at this rate, I'm not impressed by the storytelling anymore unless it step things up. Also got to see some anti-air guns in action so the skies is never safe.

They protected the town but failed to protect the aircraft, tho that last part wasn't their fault.
It seems the one in charge of the aircraft isn't to smart tho the way his aircraft got stolen seems almost impossible not to mention rather strange.
And it was also clear that Emma has some serious hatred in her.

There's a classic and nostalgic feeling to an episode like this. Gotta love the bad guys this week and their corporate LARPing. The series continues to be my favorite of the season.

Nice episode again.

I'm loving this soundtrack during the tail fighting, has a very classical vibe to it and feels like I'm watching something unfold. xD

In the end they protected the town but not the plane, but at least they gave the townspeople the will to fight again. :)

It was okay, I guess. Though I would've preferred the vigilante shooting down some planes. Unnecessary fanservice at the start (If that's called fanservice.) I'm still wondering how they manage to incap the planes by always hitting wings and the like when in military themed movies, hits to the pilot and even explosions aren't uncommon.

The only fanservice we have only appeared briefly with Zara, so those so called Elite Industries wants the Raiden or the Mitsubishi J2M

In the end them towns folks used their 11 Type 97's, which btw looks more like the Nakajima Ki 27.

I am trying to like this series. I am not really concerned with the story at this point as it is more of a "dog fight of the week" anime. That being said, the animators do a great job on keeping to realistic maneuvers and paying attention to the engine power vs. weight ratio and climb rates of the types of planes.

However, it is disappointing that the girls seem to have a fire control computer that allows them to hit wield seems, engine ports and fuel lines with each shot. Several times now they have taken on heavier planes that the .303 ammo they are firing would take such precision shooting and they have no problems.

I would like to see a little more world building, or at least an explanation of why the pirates can field a flight of 40 planes but need to raid to survive.

The formula "a little bit of story then the rest is dogfight" could only work for so long. I'd rather have an episode just dedicated some of the main characters and few fanservice(i'm talking about them showing the planes and maybe doing maintenance because you watch this for the planes not the cgi characters).

I'm perfectly content with this formula. I've said it before, but if there's a good dogfight every episode i'm happy. The worldbuilding is lackluster, and the story arcs are pretty disposable, but that's fine.

I have noticed everyone's improbable ability to miss the main fuselage of every aircraft and never hit a flesh target despite aiming at them... But i guess it keeps it bloodless and family friendly. But realistically speaking, taking non-fatal shots like that so consistently would take an obscene amount of extra piloting skill and carefulness, meaning you could end up getting screwed over because failed to take the shot. Oh well.

This episode did far better with the more practical aerial maneuvers, and not just tail chasing and straight-on aiming all the time.

Emma's tantrum speech to the mayor really pisses me, made me wish I was there to answer her stupid question and statement. But I'm glad she saw the wrong in her, unlike some characters here who just blurt out nonsense for the sake of it.

Damn I'm not liking these characters at the moment, they make me enjoy the plot less with their stinking attitudes.

I really hoped they had dropped the 3D characters all together, since there wasn't any shown up until the OP. but alas, well I gave it a try but this is a dropped show for me, the constant back and forth between 2D and 3D characters is just killing everything for me.

The sound design blows me away every time, as do the crazy maneuvers from our kotobuki squad god damn.

The end of the episode insinuated that they would attempt to recover the plane, but idk if we'd really continue on this story. Episodes 2 and 3 were both like self contained missions for our crew, and this town doesn't seem to have any story significance. It was nice to get some more insight on what a typical town looks like in this world.

Still curious on where this story will go tbh. It could be episodic just following our crew on missions and shit, but I'm interested into what the writers can whip up for this world they have created and give us some good plot.

Oh yeah it's also nice to see our squad isn't invincible and can actually kind of fail a mission. Now the last part was mostly cause of recklessness from the mayor, tho it helped Emma perform a safe-ish landing after being hit.

I was really disappointed by this. Even the dogfight scene was quite dull, tbh (like some flight simulator game from years ago, plus the ridiculous "we hit everything we aim at" stuff). And the overall story/worldbuilding went nowhere. Everything looks so wooden and...cheap, in terms of the animation. I'm unimpressed.

So this time it's....

11 vigilante + 6 Kotobuki + 1 Mayor + anti-aircraft batteries VS. 30+ pirates

Seems kind of bad this time with one of the squad actually being shot down. I wonder how they would get back the stolen plane on the next episode?

.303 ammo? I would assume the first thing they did with those planes when they got them were swap the .303's out for twin .50cals. The IJA done so as soon as the Ho-103 entered mass production.

I just jumped in at this episode and found the overall episode slightly entertaining, Pretty good dogfighting scenes...which I found more entertaining than all the dialogue that took place prior. Taking on the nimble early design fighters wth a Raiden...something to keep the overall plot moving, I suppose. Found it mildly amusing how the "one shot lighter" maxim was maintained.

I am just going off of what was said in episode 2 with their guns being called pitiful. 50 cals were standard armament of the time and .303 was what was originally mounted so I am taking a guess. If they just had something like a Fushou Akiyama Yukari no Sensha Kouza for this show we would know.

It has no plot and inferior characters. Just because plane moves when doing maneuvers that does not make the anime better LOL

Far superior in what ?!

No plot and less likable characters makes it far inferior to Girly Air Force. I'm not even saying that Girly Air Force is great show or anything, but it just better than this trash.

I'm entitled to my opinion. If you hate this "trash" so bad why are you watching it? Don't you have something better to be doing with your time than coming here and letting us all know what superior taste you have compared to the riff-raff who are enjoying the show. Do you get some kind of weird sexual jollies whining about shows you don't like? I think you do...

Repetitive for 3 episodes now: supposedly vet old guys as comrades first fight enemies, barely make a dent and die off as flies (this episode they made 0 kills before Kotobuki came), Kotobuki always late and save the day. Well the funny twist is Mayor and their democracy, and him basically giving the Raiden away.

The dogfights still got cool maneuvers and sound. The company themed enemy was refreshing. Mayor with the fastest plane just hovering stable under the enemy so long that Boss had time to exit the cockpit, land on the hood and open Mayor's canopy then sell his painting... just a bit too silly and jarring compared to the realistic dogfight.

Emma & Leona's nice kind of balances out the Chika/Kirie.

Depends. I'm watching both. In terms of worldbuilding and originality of characters, Kotobuki is unquestionably superior.

On the other hand, in terms of character development and general plot development, Girly Air Force has the upper hand. They might be so generic that the character growth and plot development can be seen and tracked from across the damn solar system, but it's plot and character growth nevertheless, and it makes the audience (kei aside; he's a plot device) invest themselves in the characters. All of them have clear desires and wants (apart from Kei, of course).

I can't say the same of Kouya no Kotobuki. Sure, the sense of world is fantastic, but there's no real driving force or motivation for the characters other than Kylie (who seems to live for pancakes). Girls und Panzer had the girls saving their school from being closed, but there's not yet (a quarter of the way in) any overarching plot other than "let's show the next IJAF/IJN aircraft."

To make matters worse, the combat is simply too formulaic and too clean. It worked for Girls und Panzer because of the limitations of tank combat (GuP's director is directing Kouya no Kotobuki), but the same formula used for air combat makes it feel far too slow, to the point that it removes all of the tension.

The combat is still better overall than GAF (which actually caught up this episode), but there are things that occasionally just don't make sense. For instance, in the last episode, Ki-61 Hien pulling a sustained turn with the Kotobuki Squadrons' Ki-43 Hayabusa, a much lighter and more nimble aircraft; the Hayabusa flown by the Kotobuki squadron actually has just two thirds the wing-loading of the comparable Hien.

"Elite Industries" - rather clever. Was there really any difference between Mitsubishi and a crime syndicate?

Like Girls und Panzer, I love the transitioning between first person gun or cockpit 'mounted cameras'.
The sound effects really pop! They're very punchy, more so than in other anime. Really good.

I'm pretty puzzled by negative comments here. What are people expecting, War and Peace?

How sad to see no improvement in the part concerning the plot: the characters remain flat and with no room for improvement, until now. The speech changes when the air fights start, the acrobatics and the action are quite engaging and make the viewing of episodes pleasant. The animations are still at unacceptable levels given the times. I hope you improve this anime, after all it is not to be thrown away.

My satisfaction here only to seeing Leona and Zara nice body. Because the main course one, the aerial battle, seems lack of excitement to me, because, yeah, they failed. Atleast they try to show us how the city had its own defences, so the sky pirates won't be a thread in the future. They succeeded to increase the moral of the city squad. Thats good for them, referring how bad their relations in the previous episode.
