Well, it's a bittersweet-drama episode with Rei and the chemistry between him and the girls.

The bits of comedy is quite amusing in this series imo. Segment of the day chasing Momo is hilarious. Loved the way they expressed the character interactions though and ways to show emotions. Rei plays a big brother-like role for Momo which shows a bit more of his mature side.

Felt bad for Rei's past though considering what happened to his family after a tragedy. However, I think the series also did a good job at getting the viewers to familiarize with Rei's character and how he began shogi.

Such a powerful episode. Not only do we get into the mind of a boy who has PTSD. But we also understand Rei a bit more. The development with the family is great. Nothing that isn't understandable and its very real in fact. I dont want to make anyone look like the bad guy because honestly they are children and they are very emotional at that age. Still know it seems like we understand the whole molestation incident. Sadly he was also physically abused. Not a big deal everyone gets slapped but it seems like the emotional trauma is what got to him. Even though we got to see a glimpse of his real family it brought me to tears as much as it brought him. Cute seeing Momo lie. I love how they highlight her as such an innocent little cutey. The change in art style when she says something upfront is adorable. The flashbacks really came marching like a lion hitting him constantly as he walks home and tries to fix his sweater.

This episode as a whole is probably the best directed one yet. Visually, Narrative, Style, everything about it was soo good.

The tragic backstory episode, and tragic it was. Well at least the cats and Momo are adorable. This episode definitely spoke to my inner anti-dog, pro-cat stance. Even when just trying to be friendly, dogs are too much to handle.

Amazing episode, Very bittersweet but yet so powerful on characterization.

The part where Rei remembers his sister as he tries to treat Momo's injuries and eventually ends up crying is so inexplicably sad. I teared up too. T.T
Momo was really cute when she lied.

I really empathized with Rei when he said he always prefers a room for himself after coming home from school so that he can relax. Nothing like that personal space man.

Rei's past is so bittersweet, It has these really sweet moments but at the same time it's really tragic. He really loved his family.
The way that sister acted at the funeral was despicable, That moment when Kouda walks and offers to take Rei in was really sweet. You could see how happy he was to meet someone he was familiar with.
Sadly enough he was physically abused by Kyouko after going to the Shogi house, The peek of all this emotional sadness was when Rei identified himself with the cuckoo. That was one of the most poignant comparisons ever.

Very interesting portrayal of how Rei began Shogi, It wasn't passion or love but just a lie to survive.

I'm really glad that Rei met the sisters. At least now he can experience the warmth of family again. :D

The episode was quite tragic, but they still managed to sneak in a hilarious scene with Kobayashi Yuu voicing a random dog.

So I guess MC was raped by his sister, and we just found out why.

Kiriyama, slayer of families.

Really loved it, although I'm not a big fan of drama. But you could really tell why Kiriyama is the kind of person we see him currently in the anime. He lost his whole family and nearly destroyed another family.
He's pretty lucky to have been picked up by Akari.

Loved this episode and I'm loving this show but it still could be so much better if it didn't constantly attack its own pacing. Like it could have been 'easily one of my top favorites' level. I'm a bit disappointed in Shaft.

Pretty dark episode yet the most enjoyable so far. :( It's hard for me to really get behind the shogi playing aspect but I really love the stories when he's with the sisters. Like the highs and lows the show presents it really does remind me of Fruits Basket.

You took that scene too literally. Rei reacted that way because he felt it was perfect analog to how he felt when he played and won against Kouda in the first episode, who just looks a little different because he's older and combed his bangs back.

Besides, even if he did - do you seriously think he'd be able to attend official shogi matches or even walk around freely without any sort of means to disguise himself or some sort of alias?

Rei's backstory is sad as fuck. His family was killed. A shogi family took him in and gave him a reason to get immersed into something so he can forget about everything that happened.

The dad is really, really harsh though, it's his fault IMO that his family went to shit. Rei lost himself in shogi.

The fact that Rei never liked shogi kinda makes me think of how Taichi in Chihayafuru relates to karuta
Poor Rei, being better than someone at something can be hard especially if your surroundings can't accept it, in the end Rei feels guitly and it affects him. As if he hasn't suffered enough

Mmh... I understand why Rei would think he is a cuckoo, but to my mind Dio from JJBA is more of a cuckoo than him, lol.

Rei's aunt is a b*tch. The kids from his adoptive family were obnoxious (well, the boy did nothing in this episode but for some reason I didn't like him at all), but the father has a big part of responsability.

By the way, in case there is some one wondering why Rei gets called "Zero" some times (like when Kyoko slaps him and in the first scene of the first episode), it's because zero is pronounced "rei" in Japanese.

Well that was an intense & sad episode.

Poor Momo falling over, but Rei was able to help her with the pain.

Woah Rei losing his whole family is so tragic.
Argh that Aunt doesn't even care about Rei.

Kyouko punching Rei is not a nice thing to do. That is terrible.
Poor Rei had to leave his adoptive family or else they would break up even more.

What a sad past Rei had. It must have really sucked for him to try and cope with the fact that he fucked up his adoptive family when he had no intention of doing so.

I really hope they keep this pace, things are going to get 10x better, there is alot of scenes I want to see so badly. Although I was hoping the music would be sadder showing his family scene, didn't have that big impact I thought it was going to have.

This anime is off the walls good. 5/5

Pretty heavy episode but also interesting background they did finally show us what we already knew...

So it was his step-sister Kyoko who was abusing him afterall.. even though there is still bit of the story untold as there was something going on between two of them sexually as we were shown before.

I wonder if he ever gets to meet both of his step-brother and step-sister again on better terms, let's hope the time, healer would set things right. But he'll probably meet Kyoko (now 21) at one Shougi tournament if I have to guess, let's see. Who knows what happened to them after he had left, that part of past was still unrevealed.

On the side note, the part with Momo was nice. It's great to see that he can finally cry and that Akari can lean to his help when needed. I wonder if she ever meets Kyoko too as they are probably of the same age right now.

Great episode, both halves cleared a lot of things up and brought the drama of the series to a new level. Now I'm interested in a potential confrontation with the siblings of his shougi family.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

That was a phenomenal episode because it also showed Rei's relationship with shogi:

1) Started playing shogi to spend time with father
2) Had to play shogi to be apprentice of his father's rival
3) Because of his shogi talents was destroying his master's family
4) Quit school in order to play shogi so that he can leave his master's household as soon as possible

TLDR: He was essentially forced into shogi from the very beginning and it's ironic due to his natural talent at the game.

Damn.

Fantastic and powerful episode. Rei's backstory is truly tragic and heartbreaking. We get to see how he became the person who he is today which will provide a better understanding of his character for the viewers down the stretch. His monologues are astounding and captivating. The writing for the thoughts in his head is superb and easily paints a picture in my head.

That cuckoo analogy was used perfectly and Rei's realization that he was the cuckoo was great. After becoming the cuckoo, Rei decided to go independent after inadvertently destroying his Shogi sibling futures and acceptance from their father. That is a heavy burden to bear for a teenager, thus why he is the way he is now on top of his family dying.

5/5- I'm extremely impressed by this show's use of analogies, motifs and dialogue. In a literal sense, this is nearly a masterpiece with Rei's narrative and inner workings within his mind. I was completely absorbed in this week's episode.

So Rei has had a pretty sad past. His family died in an accident and all his blood relatives care about everything else except for him. His aunt is busy getting the family hospital and the others are busy talking about how bad she is. The only person who come to Rei is his dad's friend. The only reason why Rei picked up shogi was because it brought him closer to his shogi playing dad. And because of that he got closer to that friend. Shogi saves Rei from going to an orphanage as he's taken in at the pretext of being an apprentice. And the apprentice outdoes the master's own children again and again. Lol that daughter was such a sore loser. She wanted to become a professional lol. No professional beats up the person they lost to. Rei breaks down the two kids with his amazing shogi skills. He goes to live alone, away from them, to prevent further damage to that family.

What was surprising was that Rei cried upon remembering his imouto when he saw Momo's hurt arm. Didn't he say something like crying out will do nothing so he doesn't cry over his loss of family? He didn't remember his parents when Hina was crying. Guess his time with this family is affecting him.

What a wonderful flashback episode. Rei's past was very tragic and I loved the way it was presented. My favorite parts had to be when Rei lied about liking shogi just so he could survive and when he compared himself to a cuckoo. The lie about liking shogi really relates to me as I did something similar when I was young. I pretended I liked avocado just to impress my mom and seem like I was healthy. It worked out pretty well for me though, as I've grown to like avocado over the years. Though, in Rei's case, he just became super good at the game. This is definitely one of the best things airing right now.

Rei's past just gets more and more depressing the more you end up hearing about it. To think that he had to lie about liking shogi just to be able to survive and not end up at some orphanage, where the bullying he was already suffering was only likely to get even worse than it already was. Also, it seems like Kyouko was the one we saw undressing Rei in bed last week, and the way she treated him here seems pretty illuminating in light of that fact. I suppose the thing about the cuckoo is one of the main things still affecting him even now: his own family died, he essentially destroyed another and now a third family have kinda taken him in. If his reaction to Momo's scratches was any indication, that's a connection that Rei definitely made again and he is probably afraid that his presence could cause it to happen again, even if everything we've seen so far indicates that such a thing is virtually impossible with the three sisters.
