THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Meh, this felt kinda average. We got the introduction of the main premise while there's a good degree of realism but I'm not really sold on what they're trying to do with the cheerleading themes.

Meanwhile, I think the show's got some funky music lol..
The way I think the storytelling done so far with usage of scenes from the past to connect with the present is somewhat clever I guess.

Sugita's doing a lot of characters with glasses this season...

Anyways, it was a good episode. Haruki and Kazuma are likable characters, and the cheerleading premise is somewhat interesting. It has potential for now. And the OP's pretty good too. I wonder how Haruki injured his arm though (well I mean, it's probably from judo, but how exactly).

I've watched a good amount of sports anime, but I've never watched anything about cheerleading so this will be interesting

I can definitely feel the bromance

The ost is surprisingly pretty good

You don't listen to an OST like this everyday. One big reason why to watch the show.

A cheerleading anime is interesting by itself, the motions looked nice. The third guy who came in is great xD

This episode was average and the animation too, though the cheerleading parts were done better. I like the cast, especially the Glasses guy. From the opening it seems there'll be a lot of guys (not just 5 or 7), so I'm looking forward to it. I think this is going to be the happy and calming series this season. 3/5

I actually enjoyed this episode much more than expected. I thought the character designs were very ugly before, but after seeing them in motion I don't really mind them, they looked fine. The glasses guy feels like a total clone of Rei from Free though, not that I mind!

Since when did fucking donkey screaming create the potential of becoming a cheerleader. You say chants and all in cheer-leading, but as much and it doesn't have to be screaming like how the guy technically screamed for his sister lol.

Other than that, the episode was very average and it has a lot going for itself considering the concept of the plot and how it revolves around cheer-leading (now that's something we barely see in the sports genre!) even more about how it's boys performing this sports (which I won't lie but I was laughing at this concept for awhile lol) Oh boy, there is going to be some heavy ass bromance in this lol, prepare yourselves.

The animation was superb and the OSTs are good. The characters so far seem quite empty and have nothing to define them. The glasses guy is very archetypal but I hope I see more characteristics to him.

3/5 so far :)

i actually liked this a lot more than i expected. since it's only the first episode and all we really got were character introductions, i'd give it a 4/5, but there were a lot of things that were surprising and delightful!

- gender subversion. the whole male-only cheerleader team thing aside, you also get mc's sister who kicks ASS at a super physical sport without the usual anime cliches of her being super masculine and/or ugly. as well as this, you get mc's best friend wanting to follow his mom's dream rather than his dad's. it's a small detail but once you notice it you'd be surprised how rare it is in media for good mother/son and father/daughter relationships to appear, let alone for the kids to 'take after' them/be inspired by them, etc. (i suck with words but hopefully you know what i mean.)

- nice animation that stayed pretty consistent throughout the episode

- NICE PLOT PACING!!! i love sports anime but you gotta admit even the best of them are fast-paced, corny and unrealistic. this actually felt pretty genuine. it's nice that it's set at a college rather than a high school, too.

- as others have mentioned, cool ost! kind of reminders me of kiznaiver's op, in a way. i love dance music.

- i feel like i was going to make some more points but i've blanked now, lol

overall i'm pretty excited for this! i expected to want to drop this after the first episode, but i guess i'm in it for the long haul.

I would say, if this doesnt go the shitty "Prince of Stride" route or is not too fujoshi.....ish like the previously mentioned Anime or "Free", than this could be a decent Anime with an unique idea actually.
Even more interesting that men actually want to form an all-men cheerleading team (like cheerleading actually started) instead of the Anime going the easy route with women and easily using fanservice until your eyes bleed.

I'm pretty sure this is going to be one of my favorites this season. There is little I didn't like this episode and the fact that we have a show about male cheerleaders is something I can't help but be interested in it.

Really like the pace of this episode. I'm happy we didn't jumped directly to the member recruitment part but spend some time giving the main duo some characterization. It was a nice touch. I guess Haruki's fear of heights will play an important part further in the plot. Glasses guy was a bit boring so I hope his character gets fleshed out a bit more later on.

So far so good!

I don't watch many sports anime bc it's not usually something that interests me, but a male group of cheerleaders? Sounded interesting.

I actually enjoyed it way more than I thought I would, and the three characters that already showed up were very likeable imo. Kazu is probably my favorite, and I like how he has his mom as a model.

Cheerleading is different so i'm wondering how deep they're going to go with that.

funnily enough i was JUST mentioning him to a friend! he's quite a refreshing take on the character archetype. you don't usually get weirdo nerds; they're usually more in line with rei (free!) and iida (bnha) from what i've observed. also his voice is pretty cool too; i actually just came back online to see who voices him haha, since i don't think i've heard his voice before (in anything i've seen, at least). edit: welp, turns out he's been in like... everything, lol. He actually reminded a bit of Rei, but he's way more awkward and less athletic. Most of the megane boys I've seen lately play the serious type. But while Rei was a bit of a dork, Mizoguchi is taking it to another level. I really wanna see more of him.

It took me a while to recognize Sugita's voice even tho he's one of my favorite VAs. And yep, the dude must live in the Studio because he has many roles in every season. It seems like everytime I start something new he's there.

University kids! Mizoguchi cracked me up though, what an awkward guy hahaha.

Love Hiroyuki Asada's character designs. I could stare at them all day.

Glad to see more sports anime - and non-traditional sports at that! This and Yuri on Ice breaking the sports gender stereotype (for the otome? lol) is great too. See how Kazuma is following his mother's dream and Haruki's sister is strong(er than him) and pretty. Little details and things that make a difference. :)

This really surpassed my expectations tbh I wasn't expecting to care so much but they made these 2 main characters seem very likable and have some good motivation for wanting to start a cheering squad. Hope they get some more members soon and help the MC out with a bit of a confidence boost. Also nice to see a sports anime that's not set in highschool for a change, this was fun.

worth a try seeing how i'm a fan of Sugita and fact that it's cheerleading is quite different male only seems like it's more for the females though never heard of a male only cheerleading team, only one guy on a female team on the other hand is a thing and i think that would be pretty funny to watch.

Well said!

Really enjoyed the first episode. Sure it's not super exciting or anything special, but it's really nice. It does well in the slice of life department. The music though, it's beautiful, I love inspirational/upbeat-relaxing type of music, and it works well with a series about cheerleading.

I liked the interaction and relationship between Haru and Kazu, they're such good friends, and as someone who likes BL once in awhile, I didn't feel anything undertones at all. Their relationship feels natural. And lol, loving Wataru. What a dork, he's probably my favorite out of the all the serious megane dorks out there in animanga. Sugita is such a perfect fit. Their motivations for wanting to do cheerleading isn't random either, at least not for Kazu, and wanting to try something different and new is also a good reason. So the other main character, Shou, actually starts out on a different team, huh. Wasn't expecting that. I wonder how he'll end up with Breakers.

But anyways, so far so good! The art style is quite refreshing as well, I love Tegami Bachi's art :> And also, college students, it's always nice to get away from high school setting.
