86--EIGHTY-SIX (light novel)
| First off, like everyone else said, that's just Reddit. It's like the rule with positive versus negative comments in a restaurant. 100 people go there, and 70 love it, but 10 hate it, while the remaining 20 are neutral. you might get 5 compliments and 8 complaints in this scenario. This means that about 7% of those who like it speak up, and about 80% who hate it speak up. Reddit is that 80%, and they will latch onto anything they can hate while virtue signaling on some AITA post. At concerts and comedy shows there are thousands who loved it, but one douchebag who didn't like one individual part will go online and try to rally a bunch of other people who weren't there and have no clue to their cause. But overall, idiots with a common hatred speak loud and spew their garbage anywhere they can. Go to any post/thread/commentary of an anime, movie, TV show, etc. and you'll find people who went there solely to say they didn't like it with no real explanation. If social media and the internet have done anything, they have given morons with shit opinions a place to feel like they matter.  |

| I gave up visiting r/anime about 9 years ago. If I recall correctly, it is a bunch of cultists. An unpopular opinion within the group will result to constant attacks. MAL also has the same issue when it comes to battle-shounens. I stay away from battle-shounen forums nowadays. As you mentioned, I don’t understand why AOT fanboys like to compare XXXX to AOT. I don’t really compare fictions unless there are a lot of similarities. Comparing AOT with 86 is ridiculous due to how different both fictions are. The only fiction I believe that can be compared with AOT is Muv-Luv Alternative due to the amount of similarities. Not surprising considering AOT creator is a Muv-Luv fanboy. For 86, the closest comparison I can think of is Macross? I don’t know. XD Shin and Lena development in the light novels reminds me of the characters in Macross. |

 Well, This anime was popular after all so it tends to have some haters, I saw some on MAL before but I don't think that many people hate it. But you're talking about Reddit, there are many keyboard warriors over there so yeah don't worry about the hate there :) |

| Just like others pointed out, first mistake you made is visiting Reddit and expecting a coherent take. It's filled with "all media is political" and "media literate" crowd, who are guided by motivated reasoning and are actually projecting their own biases rather than objectively analysing the media. |

| Never understood the mentality of needing to express how much you hate a certain anime. There’s a weird culture of contrarian elitists in the anime community. I personally don’t think 86 is very good, but if other people enjoy it that’s fine by me. |

| Despite the fact that most people would agree with you (cause people really liked the Show and there is actually not much hate, generally speaking) I think it's pretty overrated, in terms of writing, characters or even how it looks or feels^^ You mentioned the comparison to AoT, which is exactly what I mean when I use the standart term of "overrated" AoT CHANGED the Anime landscape forever, spanning over decades, creating Characters even my grandmother knows about. 86, in comparison with that, is just a cute, bittersweet Short-Story, with way less effort put into. I think that is were people CAN get toxic ^^ The fact that we just lump an industry legend together with the new hot thing, that was popular for a moment there It's like if some new actor pops up and does his first, small movie and we go: "Oh yeah, he's just as good as DiCaprio, if not better" People actually compared it with AoT and meant it, back when it aired xD You know what I mean? |
