This is a review by someone who has fully read the manga and just finished episode 1.
The art is good, same as in the manga. Minus the censorship of course. Censoring/skipping the nudity/some scenes was understandable (volume 0 skipped, but it was really R-rated stuff) but what is not understandable is the gore being censored. They seem to have tried to turn this seinen manga into a mix of shounen/seinen anime. So of course as a manga reader this is disappointing. Take cyberpunk edgerunners for example, it had gore and was well-received.
Animations are great, people complain it being too slow, but visual fidelity/clarity is nice to have, especially since this animates a very old manga. Most importantly there is no weird CGI, something that ruined the berserk movies.

So the story starts at volume 1, and it completely skips volume 0; for two reasons: First because it's R-rated stuff, second probably because they decided to start in the chronological order. Time will tell if they actually animate volume 0 later on.
This looks like just a revenge story, but the plot deepens later on, so don't worry. The story is really well-thought, but I won't spoil it.

Voice Acting is great, the MC and his companion both play they roles well.

Music is great, witcher 3 vibes.

This is why I rate the TV series 9/10. It would receive a 10/10 if it had not censored the gore from the manga. Again, censoring nudity is understandable, but there was absolutely no reason to censor the gore for a dark fantasy medieval genre.

Looked good to me, but I don’t do manga so I’m not aware of how true the omission and censorship complaints are. The episode page is full of hate and disgust, when that happens I read it as ‘this is great, I must shit on it to appear more superior’.
Anyhow, I’m in for the whole thing.

Kids can handle anime gore nowadays so no. 10-year-olds watch stuff like tokyo ghoul.

I thought it would be best of the anime of winter 2025 because of manga
and censorship really turn off the whole feel of scene and Gore and action is big part of it hence it might be below average anime for me which is disappointment
yet im not even talking about nudity censorship

seinen ✘, r17+ ✘, shounen ✔
maybe another target audience switch where original is seinen and anime shounen. they even fully remove any sign of sexual theme. i will wait at least 4eps before deciding.

You guys should've expected the censorship tbh, why do you think Berserk isnt going to get made. And if you look at the OP, theyre not going to skip the earlier arcs just rearranging them. I thought the first episode was decent just fast pace and just introducing characters.

They didn’t skip all of volume 0 just the first three chapters. Those chapters I believe had the most extreme explicit content so I kinda understand why they decided to do so. They also skipped chapter 3.5 which is a flashback story but I feel like they could insert that one anywhere in the series and it would work so it might not have been skipped but just postponed instead.

I was apparently not entirely correct about it not skipping all of volume 0. Japan’s version of the volume consists of just those three chapters plus two flashback chapters while the U.S. version is actually a combination of volumes 0 & 1. So technically it did skip all of Volume 0. My mistake.

@fincayra12 Yea, they can add the backstory later on. Also looking at the OP they didn’t skip the previous arcs, probably rearranging it. Maybe as a flashback.

@Luc36 It's seinen because manga was published in seinen magazine Big Gangan. https://myanimelist.net/manga/magazine/705/Big_Gangan

@bastek66 sorry if i am not clear enough, i am not talking about manga part, but talking about this anime which seems getting toned down to make it available/switch for shounen target demographic based on what they toned down and remove. even shounen not this tame. And also this manga is about dark fantasy mature manga so i think toned down to this level is just too much.

Main character looks like Goblin Slayer without helmet. There is something familiar in his armor and weapon.

i saw some others complaining about the animation and starting point but i didn't really get it. the animation looks fine to me (unless you just wanna be a nitpicker about it) and where it picks up actually seems like a good starting point to me. at least story wise. there's always a possibility they add the skipped stuff later too.

I reject everything you've said, and I embrace everything you reject.

Yeah, I knew something felt different. I'd read some of the manga several years ago and I recall seeing a lot more gore and bewbz than what I saw here. Boy, oh, boy, times have changed. 🤣

Oh wow the pacing and restructure... this doesn't look good.

After watching the episode, I walked over to my bookshelf and grabbed the first two volumes (0 and 1) to see how many chapters they've rushed through in 1 episode. Turns out they covered 4 chapters of volume 1 and, like many already wrote, skipped volume 0 entirely. So we skipped over the intruduction of Ato and Rosen. Yeeeeeah, I'm not a fan of that decision. Also the four "heroes" Keinzell had to fight in the beginning of the story and the plot twist at the end of volume 0 before the flashback chapter was completely ruined. That plot twist convinced me to buy the first 10 volumes on a whim.

When exactly do you guys think they will show a "flashback" to where the story really started? If the gore and r_pe themes are a problem since they're aiming for a shounen audience (for whatever reason), they might as well never give us a flashback of the real beginning. It will be super awkward later when Ato and Rosen show up, already knowing Keinzell, while anime only viewers have no clue who these people even are. And how Keinzell got his questionable fame.

This saddens me. The OP song is quite good but the pacing... not so much.

Personal side note:
Sadly, Altea will not get the hate she deserves after asking Keinzell for a... very "questionable" payment to help him cross the border. The man has a child's body. I think she would deserve to be hated for that alone. But the anime completely hides how disgusting that woman is. When I first read the manga I hated her immediately. She looks like a decent person in the anime, which is just wrong.

@Luc36 Manga demographics are outdated manga-only thing. They should apply to anime and anime fanbase should move on from using them as indicator of quality or age rating of the story.

@bastek66 why though? in entertainment this information still important to decide what content in it and what allowed or not. this also relevant to what target audience like/dislike and their level of tolerance (i am not talking about overseas that had different tolerance level). btw i am not talking about age rating in seinen because i know seinen target demographic is not always for mature content, but in this case the manga/source material is set for mature content and people refer to this.
And i doubt it's outdated because this data even still used up till now in many stores especially store that have all range of age rating product. this also can be used for user to search something more specific (content and other factors).
Dlsite still separate it too.
