Heavy ep. That wasn't actually her mum tho right? Like the ghost just thought that because she could see her and called her "mother" but I felt really they were unrelated, but Aira kind of played the part of being her child in the end so the spirit could rest in peace.
The murder/kidnapping was pretty gnarly tho and darker than I was expecting from this anime!

It's pretty much a lesson in how to make a dramatic, touching mini-story with the lowest amount of necessary effort to have an impact, basically 20% effort for 80% result. But after watching it, if you think about it for a moment, the flashback seems to be hard to believe.

The anime's story takes place in modern times, so that woman's backstory is most likely set in the 2010s, in a country among the top 10 with the lowest crime rates in the world. It's not Afghanistan or some African country, such crimes don't simply happen in Japan and stay forgotten, moreover, there's no need for a typical Japanese woman to sell her body, especially a beautiful woman who can easily find a man willing to support her. In first world countries, the vast majority of hookers are there for easy money (it's way more reliable than OnlyFans), not because they are forced by circumstances. A single mom working any basic job in Japan would have enough money to support herself and one daughter. For this to be more realistic, we have to assume that her husband was some low level yakuza guy who was in big debt. If I were given the task to "improve" upon this flashback I'd add that the woman required a lot of money to cure her daughter from some disease, thus the debt, working as a hooker, etc. In the end, the emotional impact was kind of decreased by how my brain didn't feel like the premise was very believable with how it was told.

Honestly, I had completely forgotten what Aira's backstory even was before this. I think I started reading Dandadan too recently for me to get all that much out of this because even after this well-done touching episode I was just like "Oh right, she got her powers from that weird sex ghost thing". Not to give huge spoilers or anything but as strong as this episode is, it kinda just fades away as the story goes on. Aira isn't an exceptionally strong character honestly.

@LotteGiants Lmao. I'm not even in a first world country, but a second world one and even here 95% of hookers just want easy money. Source: I'm a former sex worker myself (I did erotic massage) and talked to a lot of them, even hooking up with some (for free). IDK how it's in your country, but in my a hooker earns around five times more than average doing half the work. For some women sex isn't a big deal. So maybe you should speak to actual hookers instead of relying on your fantasies. For the other 4.9% it's a result of very bad decisions.

Japan is definitely not a country where an average mother of one child needs to sell her body for survival (which seemed to be implied in this episode with how it lacked mention of any other circumstances).
