If we follow the usual 3yr once pattern, next Shinkai movie should drop 2025. Here's the catch. Shinkai has already tried all combinations possible: like Older girl - Younger boy in Your Name; Boy/Girl same age in Weathering with you; Older Boy - Younger girl in Suzume. What else is left anymore? I came to know Suzume was supposed to be a Soft Yuri movie, but the producers rejected that idea for "obvious" reasons. Even the Natural Disaster theme is getting repetitive. The major reason behind Suzume's blockbuster success is it's direct reference to 11/3/2011 Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan. Relieving the PTSD of affected Japanese and concerned Foreigners who were aware of that tragedy

You know he made other movies other than "the big 3," right? Most of them romance? There's more to romance stories than age and gender combinations.

I agree that the natural disaster premise is getting a bit old, though. But even there, I feel like there are many more angles to explore. For example, what if it takes place post-disaster/post-apocalypse? Or the disaster somehow pulls them apart, rather than bringing them together?

But to be honest, I would like to see him try something different. Like a children's movie, a mystery thriller, or a full-on fantasy epic. Or a romance without any supernatural elements, imagine that.

I’ve heard Suzume was supposed to be a girl-girl story, but then decided to drop it because it might not appeal to a wide audience iirc, but it’s prolly cause of smth else. Maybe the next movie might be like that, though I doubt it.

Wasn’t something announced about a live action movie ? Or one if his movies getting a live action version? I don’t remember clearly but it was about Makoto Shinkai and something live action. If this is the case, maybe there won’t be an anime movie next year 🤔

If there's a new Shinkai movie then they should really focus more on the writing aspect since the overall writing of Suzume was really weak. Many viewers like me don't understood most of the movie's themes other than the disaster aspect.

Also the romance part was really weak as well. Like Suzume just met that guy for a few days and she's ready to risk her life for him? That's kinda felt stupid and forced tbh.

Before Weathering With You, isnt Shinkai always use older girl - younger boy relationship?
I thought thats his fetish.
Both WWY and Suzume got older boy - younger girl, so i just assume he want to reach more general audience.

Anyway, i hope he do another banger next year.

Weathering with you is my favorite Shinkai film. Being a big fan of rain, that entire movie was just pure aesthetics for me, and they did the slower parts of the movie really well.

if Shinkai is indeed releasing another in 2025, then I hope it's a well paced slow burner. A good epilouge after the climax of the movie would be nice.

exactly... I even think his works before your name were much better in the story than those after your name, especially suzume...

Creators can use different narrative elements and character relationships to tell stories without going back to a personal “fetish”. That’s a weird way of looking at things
