If you wanna hear their British accents in the dub, I'd say season 1 is worth watching. I think it's funny, there's good VAs and amazing OST, and the old art style is charming to me. But I only found out after rewatching season 1 several times that after episode 15, it completely diverges from the manga and has a wild ending--I don't think you need to watch those episodes.

As you probably picked up from my review, you'll never need to watch season 2. It's not canon. My recommendation is to look up the manga-canon watch order, watch those, then pick up the manga from there. The manga-canon anime content follows it closely, and only misses a few bonus chapters. You'll also have skipped the manga at its art-style-developing period (not that it started bad, but it gets a lot better).

I recall hearing that ZZ's early comedy stemmed from the higher ups at Sunrise pressing Tomino for a more innocent tone in order to draw in a new audience and sell more toys. Also, Tomino apparently has a tendency in his previous works as well to follow tragic shows with more comedic ones, so it could also be attributed to another odd Tomino-ism. I can definitely understand why people would have complained about those early Shangri-la episodes, but I think that criticism lit a fire under the writers asses to come up with a real direction to the plot, which is why it starts moving like a more typical Gundam show after they leave the colony. On the topic of characters though, we may just have differing opinions, because I think Haman is a stellar character, and Judau's nature as her foil created what I found to be an extremely moving message in the end.

Nice to see another Sunrise fan. Sometimes Sunrise doesn't get the respect that they deserve because of normies' or weeaboos' hate crimes against the mecha genre.

Science fiction anime doesn't exactly get the respect that they deserve either.

By the way, I don't get Star Trek.
