@nicoxas You're a hero for this response 🫡 also that is a fun fact, and I noticed in the beginning & ending of the video that they were looking at the manga and the MV gives off the shows vibes as well.

Slight let-down after so much build-up. The world seems neither destroyed nor saved. I watched ep. Zero immediately after and I'm curious to see what relationship it has with the finale.

Poor Tokyo. Never seems to come out well in these things. The explosion reminded me of Akira.

@alpo42ab The Fable? I dropped it after a few episodes because it was boring. Does it get better?
@StateofOhayo For me The Fable is an amazing character study.

Being a fan of Sonny Chiba from the 60's through 2021 I'm all in for a slow burn Yakuza story.
It never really bored me and ramps up nicely. Akira and Yoko do the bickering brother/sister act well and they are both pros.
Yoko will give you a more insane female character then Revy from Black Lagoon
The most interesting villain I have seen yet in media would be Rei Utsubo as the former Yakuza to owner of a detective agency that extorts the rich.

It might not be your cup of Sake but I do think it delivers what it sets out to do.

This show deserves soooo much more attention. After watching Episode 0, which left me confused, I pretty much flipped a coin as to whether I would continue watching because nobody was talking about it. Turns out this is AOTS for me, sorry Alya, Stepsis, Dumped Heroines, One-Woman Harem, and Crossdresser Guy.

I can’t remember the last show I saw where so many characters died all at once. I mean, about 10 just kicked it. Brutal. And peak at the same time.

This episode felt nostalgic, from the descending hand to the pillar of light. It felt like a scene from the world of Evangelion.

This was such a great episode!
When the guy with the bowl cut said that this isn't the future that he saw it's making me wonder if episode 0 wasn't necessarily a time skip, but rather him looking into the future. So then when Oba came and created a disturbance in the sequence of events, it could have changed the future that he saw maybe?
Those bubbles could also be what causes the end of humanity as we saw in episode 0. We'll have to wait and see next weeks episode.
So glad I decided to pick this show up, it's so good🤍

@Daikktn the entire episode felt very evangelion, not very surprised since one of the writers worked on digimon and digimon was always inspired by mecha and tokusatsu (and evangelion in particular being the obvious inspiration of digimon tamers) and honestly it felt very fitting for the show to have evangelion imagery, one of my favourite additions of the anime

I'm just very confused as to what happened and why everyone did what they did. I didn't think Ouran had her memories from the previous timeline, did her brother? Don't get why he drove into the city. And really confused as to what the hand and bubbles were.

@MenchiK1 the story never confirms it, but seeing Ontan's behaviour and how the timeline shift works it's very likely she remembers some of it but not exact details, or that her memories are fuzzy since she has two consciousnesses
Her brother doesn't remember anything and I think he drove outside the city
The hand isn't explained, probably something related to what Kenichi said about an higher power wanting to eliminate both humans and invaders, maybe even the invaders leader, the bubbles are part of the energy the mothership works on and as it's destroyed it leaks out

As an avid fan of this manga, I’m LOVING how many of you are blown away by the twists and turns of this story :)

Reminds me of my first read-through. I was stunned by the chapters that were adapted into this episode. It was almost as emotionally taxing as the part where you find out Kadode committed suicide in Oran’s original timeline. Such a fantastic story. You did it, Asano-sensei🥹

@levibigass it happens in the manga too, although with the themes and how the kiss is presented I am not sure if it's romantic

Manga spoilers for the last 10 chapters that probably will be changed in the anime due to the fact it's an anime original ending and it's one of the main criticisms (personally I think it wasn't bad but the reason it worked for the manga is the reason it won't work for the anime)

The first 5 episodes were there pretty much to slow roll the setup for the show and its tone but once real bad guys start up the show kicks into high gear. It’s hardcore gangster stuff kept grounded by the derp parts. I totally get how so many people dropped off early but I’m telling you the show is AWESOME

@Alkimia most likely no since Makoto wasn't going to Tokio, so he still has it.
@Vizvezdenec Was it actually not Makoto? He looked dangerously close to the explosion despite his parent's house not being close by. I think he went to Tokyo to catch another train, but then was caught in the explosion, but I could be wrong

The episode was pretty good, this anime went the LGBTQ route since the introduction of that trans/crossdresser guy and I'm not a fan of it, and now we have a lesbian kiss but that's ok, it's not the end of the world, this anime is still great even with the LGBTQ crap in it, I just wished it didn't have it.

Anyway, maybe I forgot but I'm still wondering, the mothership arrived a couple of years ago and stayed in the air for a long time, why didn't the aliens try to communicate with the humans? because eventually the humans had enough of it and started making weapons to get rid of the aliens, so why didn't the aliens try to communicate with the humans? or maybe they did and they were still getting killed by humans so they stopped doing it? at the beginning of the anime, in the news or something they said that they tried to communicate with the aliens but the aliens never responded back, or was this a lie? they were simply manipulating the media or something and they were killing aliens in secret?

This is what happens when I watch weekly animes, I kinda forget about some details, it's better if I just binge-watched it.

@xZabuzax the reason that the invaders probably didn't communicate with humans is due to a set up by the invader government that sent them to reduce population, we know they have the ability to communicate but probably it was on someone's interest to ensure they don't, or it's just their superiority complex, don't forget they came in thinking humans are dumb and will be their slaves and pets
Overall it's just a sad case of governments not caring about their people

@Guilmon1 Yeah that makes sense, the governments of both sides (humans and aliens) didn't care about their people, I can live with this explanation.

What an episode

First off, no fucking way they still used the Prime Minister as a puppet despite leaving him behind... Their ship deserves to get nuked for trying to cover the whole thing up and leave everyone behind

Wtf did those bubbles do to those poor birds 😥

I knew Oba wasn't going to stop the explosion. There was no way it would work, but wow that still sucks. Did they know someone would try to stop it, so they rigged it to explode if someone put in the password, or was there really like a chance that he could've stopped it...

I was so anxious watching this episode. I was fully expecting the explosion to hit as Ai's brother was talking on the phone since the 15 minute mark hit right there... But you know what I think what actually happened might be worse 💀

Even as the mothership is coming down, and the aliens are just trying to get away from it, the military can't just let them go... They had a chance to get away. Oba managed to get away. They could've made it in time.

And then that huge explosion to close off the episode. How many characters did we just lose? I spotted the teacher, Oran's brother, Futaba, and Makoto 😥 How was Makoto there? I swear he went to his parents place. Did he change his mind and decide to go back to Tokyo instead? That was so fucked. He and Futaba looked so afraid😭😭

And now what? The future that the bowl cute dude saw was wrong, because of Oba? What's going to happen to those red bubbles coming down? They're still scattered around the world aren't they? Is Japan safe? Is time travel still in option? Is the fallout still happening? What is coming in these last two episodes... 😨

Anime of the year is right here for me. I really can't think of another show from this year that has kept me this invested.
@Alkimia what, oh wait, have you watched episode 0? That would explain it.

Which reminds me, the anxiety of the explosion, omg. Like I knew it was going to blow up and still was at the edge of my seat, like maybe Oba makes it so that the damage isn't so bad. I guess in a way episode 0 does spoil it does blow up and now I can see why it might have been a better idea to skip it.

ALSO IS THAT FUCKING ASSHOLE A SHIFTER TOO??? Or is he just a chuuni, why did he say "the future I saw"

Also the first thing I came here to say, THEY DID NOT JUST FUCKING KILL THE BEST CHARACTER...NOT IN THE ANIME, IN ALL FICTION. THE BROTHER BRO NOOOOO!! He was even already getting away ffs. I mean I guess it's fine, only one episode is left but, holy shit.

I usually don't care if the ending is happy or not, I'm always like "why is it always happy, why don't you surprise me" and now I was rooting for Oba so fucking much, I really wanted everyone to be happy. The little brothers of the girl T_T. Also let's talk about the choice of song in that epic scene with the explosion, I can somehow picture people saying it doesn't fit, but it just gave me goosebumps, it was so good, specially with such a colorful execution. The hand of god at the beginning was cool too. I'm so confused at what those bubbles are...like am I crazy, those shits just show up and have nothing to do with the spaceship, and the explosion sort of blew them away, which is what the fucker knew it was going to kill many people, so he really does know! I'm so confused and so sad I always forget about the show and watch 2/3 episodes instead of weekly, but at the same time I'm glad I have the last episode here already, can't wait for the conclusion. Amazing work by Inio Asano, I will definitely read the manga later to spot differences, plus the confusion I had with the stupid subtitles from earlier.

@Kismet69 No I didn't watch 0. I was really confused when I saw it in the episode list, and then I read that it adapts the last few chapters of the manga so I decided to skip it, because idk it just seemed really dumb to start there. Instead I started with 1 and watched normally up until here, then I watched 0, and then 17

And yeah he couldn't do it, not completely anyway but humanity is saved? That piece of shit survived again, he deserves hell. I knew we were gonna get some yuri stuff at some point given their relationship. Hiroshi though, didn't make it. Really good character. Not sure if this qualifies as total train wreck but it sure feels close to it. Where to start with the issues?

- the unresolved and hesitating 'savior of the world'?
- the branching narrative focusing on countless side characters?
- the not so intelligent uber intelligent aliens?
- the questionable and fallacious message of the story itself?

At this point it almost used up all of the credit it built up in the first half of the season. The above listed are just major flaws, not mentioning all the small annoyances. The narrative sure feels heavy handed, almost preachy, the closer it moves to the end.

The more the author doesn't want to declare what he believes in concrete terms, the heavier his preaching becomes. A sort of passive aggressive avoidant need to communicate with us, but is the message worth hearing? The more I hear the less I think so.
