| I think the new uniform looks better ngl. Tho the old one with the helmet and goggles looked good too. But it looked a bit too goofy and the new one looks more natural. Tarako Tarao is such an obvious parody of the mangaka Fujiko F. Fujio, the author of this show, Doraemon, Perman, and many others. It's a cool little way to include the mangaka in his own work I suppose. The story of this episode was focused more on Bon and Yumiko saving the girl who was almost sacrificed than him. Interesting turn of events. Too bad they can't stop human sacrifice tho. Ig if they had that power they would've already stopped it among other things like slavery. But it's not that easy. Crazy how things have changed and Bon started being the mentor like Ream. I still miss Ream. But Yumiko is growing on me. But it is a bit strange how Bon had to go through so much shit to become a patroller including the risk of being erased from existence. Compared to that, Yumiko had it pretty well as she didn't go through any of that. Oh well. |
| I thought that teacher character with his beret looked familiar from the first cour. Part of this episode is set in 1978, the date of when that Japanese teacher tourist died in the original timeline. Since that is the original year the manga came out, I wonder if the date was changed and is different in the original manga. It ran until 1986 and since we're in the second half of episodes (assuming they're being adapted relatively chronologically), it could be from a later event in the manga meaning it would have come out in the early to mid-80s, but still, 1978 would have been only a few years prior, as compared to now in 2024 when the anime series is releasing. It just gives it a different feel if the past and past event portrayed took place two or three or five years ago compared to real world dates as opposed to 46 years ago like the way it is here. I like the difference between the state of the Mayan archaeological ruins in 1978 though when they're actual ancient ruins as compared to 1,000 years prior when they look brand new out of the box. I've never traveled to Chichen Itza or any of the Mayan pyramids in Mexico, but I've been to several sites in northern Guatemala (Tikal) and western Honduras (Copan Ruinas) and it recalled to mind how stark the contrast is between the crumbling faded stone staircases and the replicas they freshly brightly paint for exhibition purposes. Also, I've been wondering what was the motivation behind the decision to make Yumiko's character a Time Patrol agent. I don't mean in-universe as we saw those events leading up to it play out last episode. I mean the actual character as a character from the writer's perspective, since it seems like earlier on the dark-haired girl was introduced as more of a prominent main character and implied to have a closer relationship with Bon and be the main female friend in their local neighborhood friend group. Whereas Yumiko seemed introduced more as just an extra and object of crushing on by the other boys. |

She was created solely to become an agent and was a mere stranger to Bon originally. They changed it here to make here appear in season 1. I think she's a much more fun character than Ream though, and the best problem solver out of the three When I watched the Doraemon movie I thought the girl who was with Bon was Yoko. I was a bit surprised to learn that it was the popular girl Yumiko. Tho I suppose that's more interesting. |
| ofc conveniently they can save the sacrifice, despite even explaining why they wouldn't always be able to save everyone...except actually they can because the tone of this anime won't allow them to let someone die. So the whole explanation they give ends up feeling pretty hollow. also it's easy to look back at human sacrifice (especially unwilling) as something objectively wrong, but at the same time it feels kind of offensive or least insensitive to write off an entire cultures beliefs and practices because they don't fit into modern ideals. Plenty of religions practice stuff that is objectively immoral to this day, and always have. Anyway what I'm trying to say is this ep doesn't exactly paint the most flattering picture of mayan civilisation. I feel like a lot of people often view ancient cultures through a weird lens, and this made me think maybe the creator(s) of this were also guilty of doing that. I'm not saying they shouldn't show the bad, but I feel it could've been portrayed with more nuance than "these *evil* old dudes are gonna sacrifice this *innocent* young girl against her will". Maybe I should just learn to expect less of this anime, since it's not always great at serious depictions of time periods, cultures and civilisations. To me it definitely fits more the goofy romp through time rather than trying to be serious/historical. also still finding that girl super annoying, but could just be the english VA's performance idunno yet, rather than the character herself. s1 I think barely scraped a 6/10 for me, which although I still feel like is worth watching to me, was a little disappointing due to the series' historical status and maybe some expectations I'd set in line with that. I can't see my impression of this season being much better unless it gets a lot more entertaining in the coming eps and latter half of the season. edit:an afterthought I had tho, after feeling like I typed too much again lol about T.P. Bon, it made me feel that at they very least the fact that it's episodes can stir these thoughts in me and makes me want to comment in this manner says something very positive about the anime. Many anime leave me with very few thoughts to reflect on after watching, T.P. Bon has proved on multiple occasions that it's had me thinking deeply about what it covered and how it did so. |
