I recently watched the movie and thought that the plot was kinda ass. However, I did think the animation and soundtrack were amazing with the directing being the biggest highlight for me.

Disappointment - is how I'd describe it.

Plot is 2/10 at best IMO.

Visuals saved this garbage. Hopefully Makoto won't repeat this crap with the upcoming movie in 2022. I may lose respect for the guy.

I liked it more than Your Name, but both of them aren't the best.. The movies were structured and paced beautifully though and the visuals were top notch so it was an enjoyable watch regardless.

It's a 7/10. Animation was as usual, beautiful. But I was disappointed with the lack of development between the characters and how ridiculous the plot is. I even think Your name is better even tho it also isn't that good.

Just gave it a 6/10. Animation is top notch. Voice acting was good.

But it felt like a shortened movie version of a full season of anime. Characters are not developed. There were some plot points that aren't addressed (everyone overlooks the supernatural powers?). The worst part is that the ending was underwhelming.

Fantastic visuals. That's all there is to it.
The plot is undeveloped. The characters are static. Whatever Shinkai wanted to say, the envelope (the cinematographic one) turned out to be very weak.
For me personally, the movie was boring as hell to watch and was a big disappointment for all the praise it gets.
Edit after 3 days: it is also completely forgettable.

It was a great film and is quite capable of provoking emotions. Only sometimes I was confused about how the story is told. There were so many jumps and characters that never really paid off. I kept expecting there to be something more. The love story was really sweet though and the decision at the end reminded me of Shadow of the Collossus.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, though I have some issues with regards to the ending.

First, the positives. Breathtaking visuals and fantastic OST by Radwimps. Nothing unexpected here coming from Your Name. I think the characters were likeable and personable enough that it made me care about their relationship, and I think the first acts as they go about first meeting and then using Hina's job as a sunshine girl were lovely. The climactic falling scene was also brilliantly done.

But then, once the serious part hits and this is where the movie kinda dropped down a notch for me. Given the way the whole weather maiden concept has been set up, I don't see how the show could reach a satisfactory ending. In the sense of the premise of the show, the ending was a good ending, but it felt hollow. Is disrupting the lives of millions and destroying so much really justifiable for this single relationship? It very much felt like a "victory, but at what cost" scenario to me. I want to feel happy that our main duo managed to stay together, but yet I can't. Sure it leads to some emotional, climactic lines, but I can't bring myself to justify the means to achieve this end.

Perhaps it's arguable that a bittersweet ending like this isn't a bad thing, but I can't help but feel confused by the end of it all.

Oh yeah, also why were guns involved in this movie again? I don't think it actively harms it by any means, I just found it really odd.

Just my two cents, feel free to disagree!

Felt like sappy and contrived bs towards the end and the plot as a whole was just dumb for me. What a visual feast, though! I would recommend it as a lazy afternoon watch but it ain't a masterpiece.

Visually amazing, no doubt about it. Apart from a few walking animations at some moments feeling not to convincing, it more than delivered there.

The story has several great moments, and a good dose of funny bits here and there, with the cat mimicking some movements, and how Mr Suga's niece acted during the interview about weather girls.

The moment that Hina was gone and lost the ring was definitely one of the emotional highlights. Hodaka's quest to reach her again had some good suspense, but it was never explained how it was possible that Hina just came back with him. They could just easily undo the sacrifice just like that, without any struggle, and it simply reverses the situation back to how it was? But things even got worse, despite that Hina after coming back, no longer used her power to bring out the sun again? It feels like the writers dropped the ball a little here. Things would have been far more compelling if he would not have seen her after waking up from coming back from the sky. And then a few years later feeling drawn to go someplace, perhaps that same rooftop, and find her there again finally, for example.

Still gave it a 9, since the parts leading up the finale were really good. With a more rewarding ending, could have been a 9.5 or maybe...

Visually amazing, but that only makes the absolute dumpster fire of a plot all the more insulting.

It baffles me that Shinkai Makoto was capable of producing a masterpiece like Kimi no Na wa (10/10 for me), before completely barrelling off of a cliff for Tenki no Ko (1/10).

On MAL, he holds both my highest and lowest movie scores, an impressive(ly bad?) feat to be sure.

God, I hope he didn’t forget to add a coherent plot to Suzume no Tojimari….

Yeah, good visuals, animation, characters per se, but really meaningless. Plot is just messy, incoherent and filled with holes.

5.5/10

P.S. Still tad better than Kimi no Na wa tho... :)
