I just finished episode 18 and I'm just in utter shock as to how the writer has glossed over the fact that a character was physically assaulted... Not just any character btw. A high school kid got slapped straight in the face by a college student... It even left a bruise as well.

Did I just interpret that scene wrongly or...because that is so far from okay. And the other characters reacted to it like nothing happened as well...

...huh? I don't remember this. I guess the author's not the only one that glossed over it, because I watched this anime, loved it, yet I genuinely don't remember seeing this.

@Daviljoe193 Well, it happened in episode 18 and it's kind of hard to not notice lol. She has a bruise in the next episode and no one even mentions it! It's bugging me so much...

I haven’t watched the anime in a while, but shoujo is often rushed. I remember this holding more weight in the manga.

I feel like my brain is broken. I know this anime so well, but I just don't remember this scene existing either.

I don't remember it also that well but wasn't that her ex boyfriend?.. ๐Ÿค”

I wouldn't call it glossed over, just that it isn't that important for the overall story.

Sawako and Chizuru, for example, don't ask her about it because.. well, I mean Sawako can be pretty oblivious about a lot of things + she's very shy, and Chizuru isn't a very cunning person, to say the least. lol

I also don't remember well, probably cause there's not much attention to it in the series, but I'm pretty sure it's her (ex?)boyfriend who does it
I think they didn't want to enter too much in it cause the boyfriend doesn't even appear so it would kinda shift the focus from the main storyline
I agree it's very fucked up tho, maybe the manga gives more attention to it? idk really

It was just a weak slap from a weak man, and she stopped the relationship right there, it was meaningless for her to even talk about it. The point there was that she grew out of the crappy relationships she was used to.

I don’t remember that happening. I guess it slipped from my memory cuz it wasn’t as impactful as other moments for me personally.

Just read this scene in the manga and it got glossed over because Yano wanted to gloss over that chapter of her life. She meets with her ex boyfriend to break up with him, in his frustration he slaps her and it just solidifies her feelings towards him. I guess the slap is to demonstrate Yano doesn’t stand for any bullshit and cuts off abusive people right away.

@FreedomKME Clearly not weak because it left a bruise smh. There simply is no way to normalize this. I get that Yano doesn't want to talk about it, but Yoshida who is pretty much bullish and isn't that much aware of social cues, I thought she would at least say some line about how she's going to beat up the ex-boyfriend or something. It just felt so jarring to me.

kimi ni todoke came out in 2005 while the anime started in 2009 ๐Ÿซก even if it doesn't seem like a long time i can assure you things were different back then and people had different priorities, even if now it's weird to look at, at the time it was some sort of tool to demonstrate how tough ayane is.
and i don't wish to spoil you any further but there's more questionable stuff in the manga too so... yeah, different times.

I mean, that's a 'you' thing to fixate in the wrong things. She wanted to move on from the garbage, giving it, giving him, a single more though is a waste of time and an annoyance, that's the point of that little arc.
Don't worry, in the coming new season she gets fleshed out some more.

Domestic violence gets handled in Japanese media differently than western media. I don't think the slap was glossed over but seen with a different focus.

Characters do take notice of it, though. Everyone looks shocked when she salks into the classroom. They just feel awkward about asking her about it.
