goodnight punpun is a manga that doesn't need a anime adaptation
its made in such a way that it wouldn't fit being animated

Ain’t happening.

Risk is too high for any studio to actually pick it up.

If the anime for Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction does well, his other series might be viable.

"If so what year" Who the fuck would ever know that 😭😭
I highly doubt it will ever get one, it's the one series everyone who's read it agrees it will probably never get one

I doubt it will ever get an anime the style is very unique and I would say different from the anime style that any studio would find it quite hard to animate and I think it would most likely be a movie if it was ever to turn into an anime

Not getting an anime, should not get an anime

Some manga are just better as manga and arn't fit for an anime adaptation Oyasumi punpun is one of them, Vagabond too.

If theres any highly appreciated manga that should get an anime adaptation, thats 20th century boys, i personally think it would make a great anime too

Just reading it you can immediately tell that it'd be hard and probably a pain to animate in the first place. The risk of fans being annoyed is probably pretty high too. Plus this is the one manga that I think shouldn't get an anime the most, the artstyle and everything is perfect in manga form it'd end up being like Tokyo Ghoul

As many people already said, i dont think it would work as an anime, but i think a live action adaptation could be interesting. The Story would have to be cut down obviously, but punpuns and aikos story would work nontheless. As for punpuns design, he does not need to be a bird, a creative person could work wonders with different effects over punpuns face to hide it and show his mental state. What do you guys think?

This manga doesn’t need an anime. The manga is pure perfection, and needs to be left alone.

DONT MAKE MAPPA SEE THIS DONT GIVE THEM IDEAS

its as if anime fans nowadays have ADHD attention span so you shouldn't expect dialogue-heavy mangas to get adapted

if it ever did get an adaptation I think it should stay in manga style and have punpun be the only one who doesn't talk. maybe make it like an animated version of the manga with his dialogue popping up like it would in a silent film, similar to how it's portrayed in the manga.

I hope not. Punpun is a manga so unique and specific that it cannot get a good anime adaptation that could feel the same like the manga.

If I remember correctly, Inio Asano has said that he didn't want Goodnight Punpun to ever get an anime adaptation.

However, I think that if Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction gets a succesful adaptation, he could change his mind.

"One of my regrets about Punpun is how I alienated so many of my readers. With every dark turn the manga took, sales dropped. The first brutal image comes in the Uncle Yuichi flashback, and sales took a dip there, hard. And then Punpun kills someone, and it takes another dip. It’s a story that I really worked hard for to reach the end, so I wish people would try reading it all the way through. It might not leave you in a great mood, but hey. (laugh)"
Whole interview here.

^That said, and even though I'm not entirely its biggest fan, I still really want an anime. I bet it would not work well, but I want to see this community's reaction to the extreme nihilism. -g-

Was asked a couple times here over the years, so I'll just quote myself.

That said², I would appreciate a Holograph movie much more than preachy Punpun, though. -g-

MAL is far from being my primary site for literature, which is why I’ve stopped doing single-chapter updates. Baka-Updates and two French sites are far superior—more detailed, complete, and less restrictive. They're perfect for manga, light novel, and book collectors like me, making the process much less stressful and tiring. -g-

It’s been a decade since it finished so probably not, and quite frankly I’m not sure how well it’ll do, personally there’s no need I think it utilizes the manga format amazingly.

This right here lol. I’ve been noticing more and more especially with the somewhat recent wave of new age anime from Demon Slayer and JJK, that a lot of anime fans have been getting adhd as hell like gosh damn you really can’t help looking at your phone if there’s too much dialogue or nothing going on for a few episodes but soon as a fight starts your eyes are glued to the screen. I’m speaking with personal experience with a friend and some people I saw at the ds movie lol.

It could definitely work and be a wonderful adaptation, but it's definitely risky. If we ever get I wish they keep Punpun completely silent like in the manga, not even a narrator saying his lines, just a cut to a black screen with text like old silent movies.
Goodnight Punpun is a very unique manga, so the anime would be kinda experimental
Btw a live action definitely WOULDN'T WORK. Punpun, his family and many face expressions only work because they're drawings, it wouldn't translate well to live action.

While I wouldn't say it is impossible, it is very unlikely, and with how the story is, I highly doubt that any large studio would pick it up. It would probably be a pretty obscure one. It's just a very risky move from any studio.

I keep hearing that it wouldn't work as an anime adaptation, but why? Is it just because we never see Punpun talk directly like every other character, but the narrator telling us what he is saying? There are various ways to deal with that, I don't see the issue. You'd need a very good director, of course.

The huge issue that prevents it from being adapted is that it's too dark, I mean real darkness and not superficial edginess (which I even like, I'm not criticizing works relying on that).

Unlikely and a very hard task due ro how the story is told, plus it would be mostly filled with dialogues and monologues, even more so than the destruction manga that was adapted of Asano.

The directors could work around the sex scenes and the melancholic bits but it would lack engaging elements for a common audience, despite it being a extremely popular, very well known manga.
