If shounen ai is absolutely not your cup of tea you probably should not watch this.
That's just my opinion though.

Thanks for letting me know. Will stay away from it. It would be nice if someone updated the tags of the anime so other people don't get bamboozled.

Less angry people saying bad things about the story I love, yes. But there's nothing there yet to prove that this tag would be truly necessary.

Haven't said anything bad about it yet. Just that it's not my cup of tea and that I'll stay away from it. I'm not into gay stuff. But each their own. No judging. Would be nice though if the tags were updated so people don't get scammed into watching it.

I did not mean you, you were a perfect gentleman. I wish myself that there was a tag so people who tend to get agressive would not badmouth this story, even based on fan comments only, because that happens sometimes. But there is actually no direct proof in the donghua that the relationship in question is not platonic, so I can see why they haven't tagged it. This might yet change, or not. But it is still undeniably a special bond between two men, and knowing nothing about you as a person I won't take the responsibility of giving any guarantees that you would not regret watching it, after all.

If it helps any, Revolutionary Girl Utena, despite being THE staple shoujo ai/yuri anime, is not tagged shoujo ai or yuri on MAL either. Neither of the extremely gay seasons of Sailor Moon (the 3rd and 5th) are tagged either.

MAL pretty much requires people to kiss multiple times on screen before it will tag a series as shounen or shoujo ai or yaoi/yuri, which is absurd.

TLDR; MAL tags cannot be trusted for LGBTQ stuff.

"if it were a bl" ??? lol

Although Tian Guan Ci Fu (the novel) is not as explicit as MXTX's earlier works, I would recommend reading it if you want the uncensored relationship between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng.

It does have a manhua with quite gorgeous art. Story-wise it's a little ahead of the donghua.

holy mother of God the subs were way too fast, I didn't honestly understand that much but it was G O R G E O U S x___x I seriously can't understand how something like this that doesn't seem that popular, or from a big studio, can get such insane animation quality compared to popular anime omg. I'm not complaining! I'm just mindblown in all aspects lmao from colors to animation to the music... WOW.
Still, in order to understand something I think I'll first read the book (from my understanding it was written by the creator of MDZS so I'm looking forward to it!) uwu

It's actually crazy popular in China. Manhua was at 1st place on billibilli even before the first chapter was posted.

nice first episode, didn't really get what was going on. I haven't read the novel.

all I got was dude who got banished 2 times already decided to join the realm of gods thingy then he gets sent on a mission to kill that demon that has been taking princesses recently, then plot twist, he knows the dude that has been doing this all along from back in the day? may be wrong here.

Does anyone know why Xie Lian has two henchmen if no one likes him? or am I asking too late.

The two henchmen has their own history and their own reason why they doing that, but you won't be knowing it for now because it will be revealed much later in novel, since this season 1 will only cover up to book 1, you wont know much about them.

The thing with tgcf is, you just have to be patient and wait until you gets further into the story and they will revealed more until you get the whole damn thing lol.

After finished the novel for the first time I even go back n reread tgcf novels bc going thru them the first time I had no idea what the Fuck was goin on lol after reread it for 2x times it becoming more clear. So for first time watcher/reader it was like an information overload so pay attention, theres gonna be hint throwing here and there, dont be confused to each detail/expression/reaction between each character because the way the act and talk all have their own reason that will be much more clear later on(tho you wont find it on season 1).

I don't know if it's just me but even though I really liked this episode it has left me very confused, especially the in the end. Should I read the novels before watching the rest of it?

It can be confusing for first time watchers, especially if you are not used to this kind of world building/setting.

You could watch this season then jump to the novel or go straight to the novel if you want more details and explanations of the characters and the world then come back to watch the donghua. The choice is yours.

I'll just say that as a novel reader, I am enjoying this adaptation.

Initial thoughts: I love the visuals and character design. Animation is lacking but I feel like it would not have bothered me much if at least the voice acting and OSTs were much better but that's unfortuantely not the case. The voice acting feels very underwhelming and the soundtracks don't fit TGCF's vibe either. Also the pacing is indeed quite fast, especially for all the dialogues. Anyways I'm only one episode in so we'll see where it's gonna go!

Be somewhat careful: the pacing goes from fast to slow, and there's going to be some underwhelming elements, which will be particularly irritating for viewers unfamiliar with the source material. Because of this, I highly recommend you to read the original novel or to at least get a better sense of the story on the TGCF wikia. It will definitely aid your viewing and enjoyment. Have fun!

Maybe avoid the wikia... It contains spoilers. Definitely +1 for the novel though.

I've always been interested in the bureaucratic nature of the ancient Chinese heavenly pantheon so this is very cool in my view. I'm getting some yaoi vibes but since I initially saw some of the cover art I was not entirely surprised. I'm still interested in the story and the art style is very nice so I'm gonna watch this till the end.

If MAL synopsis is to be believed this is his third ascension into heaven at the beginning of the episode. the first one was narrated near the end. I'm interested on what happened between the first ascension and before his third ascension, as there were some vague references and scenes to it on the narration.

so it was a double episode?

solid start. kind of confused though hahaha. the ruler of that city became a prince in heaven. that sounds like the mc (a prince in heaven) that everybody hates. but it also said the prince, before going to heaven, saved a child who fell from some building. and that child was wrapped in bandages like the mc. so is the mc the child? and did the leader of that city become the wrath demon? i don't get it

don't actually answer me. i'll figure it out as i watch more episodes. i hate spoilers

7/10 first episode. i think it's got good potential

Art, design, animation all very good. Fight scenes were cool.
Lil lost, hard to remember the names, but I got the gist of the story.

The prince was once a ruler then ascended and the "monster" is the boy he saved?

I've heard quite a bit about how good the story and the characters are, so today I finally finished watching the first episode! The art and animation look very beautiful, and it certainly fulfilled my expectations. Especially the scene in the last part of the episode was executed so well, Hua Cheng escorting Xie Lian out of the forest while holding his hand, the blood dropping off the hanging corpses... it has a horrifying yet beautiful tone to it. The insert song was the cherry on the top, it built up the atmosphere and described the background story of Xie Lian, about how he met Hua Cheng in the past and rescued him. I'm neither a novel nor a manhua reader, so all of my impressions are solely based on the donghua, but I'm very excited about the further development of the story and especially how the two protagonists are going to interact with each other. It's too bad that depictions of homosexual love is restricted in China, but I'm fine with it. If the story is catching my interest, I might consider reading the novel in the future.

Because the Japanese version (that with Japan Op-ending song) that I watched (it's from bilibili) have some many scenes that being cut. It's is because the first episode to long?
