We don’t need to know 🤫
It’s fine if you don’t know everything, that’s what makes the magic.

it doesn’t matter. It’s an allegory of personal development (going past the wall)

Water on fire, lands of ice, snowfields of sand. The people who saw these things were the ones that obtained the greatest freedom in this world.

half-half I'd say. Some implications are less obvious and some of it is self-interpretation. And also because the Anime is so calm and spiritual with characters that look like angels, I just went with the interpretation that I cam up with

all of what you've asked is up to you to determine. one of the most wonderful things about this show (at least in my opinion, anyway) is that much of it is left to the individual's interpretation. I myself have several different interpretations. but, by and large, I view this show as being one that's about forgiveness (particularly the forgiving of oneself), community and rebirth.

I wonder if ABe even knew what the walls represented. It's there to think about a 1000 different ways.

We don't even know if they're:

A) Somewhere remote on Earth (Seems extremely unlikely)

B) On another planet somewhere in our known universe (Also seems extremely unlikely)

C) Another dimension

D) In purgatory or a purgatory-esque realm which is a subset of or connected to the afterlife and only accessible upon death and to those allowed entry by God/gods/other celestial beings, similar to something like the realm portrayed in Death Parade, except that that was even more of a temporary waypoint

C and D can kind of be one and the same.

This is one of my few 10/10 series and I've thought about it a lot, but there is only one complaint I can conjure and muster against it. Which is that it leaves things as they stand by series' end a little too vague and open to interpretation, and I wish that there were just at least a few more answers, or established definitive hints toward them written in. At the same time, that open-ended subject to individual interpretation approach, as frustrating or unsatisfying as it can be in a way (easy to feel a little blue-balled by the ending) is perfectly in line with the nature of the mystery aspect and magical realism of the series.

Because when you think about it, in a way, the greatest questions of the series for the characters are "Why are we here? What or where were we before? Where are we going after? What is the true nature of this world and its purpose?" Their questions are just the questions to life's mysteries and the nature of existence and the universe itself. Their questions and dilemmas are our own questions and dilemmas. So there is in a sense no true sufficiently satisfying way to answer it because we don't know and haven't arrived at the answer in our actual real world.

Glie could just be seen as a microcosm or alternative image of of our own world and if we're being honest we're all equally in the dark as the characters themselves; as Rakka and Reki and Nemu and Hikari and all the rest. Any author who could write an ending which would make perfect sense to everyone and elucidate all the hitherto unknowns would maybe have to be an omnipotent being themselves beyond our limited perspectives and constraints.
