I'm no longer here for Light, he's executed people who have dedicated their lives to fighting crime and were innocent.

I'm here for L.

Light views this as a war. Killing criminals is his justice. Killing L and the FBI is protecting his justice. At least, that's his perspective.

I loved that scene where Raye turned around and Light was stood staring down at him, the colouring of it all looked great.
Honestly at this point I'm just wondering when we meet Misa

This episode has always confused just as much as the manga material that it adapted, because we were told at one point in both the anime and manga that Light cannot use the Death Note to make a person kill other people, yet that's exactly how Light used the Death Note here - he had Raye write down the names of his fellow FBI agents and killed them through Raye.

Some people would argue that Raye didn't know what he was doing, but that seems irrelevant since Light did know and he was the one who specifically wrote that part in the notebook when he wrote down Raye's death scenario.

I was feeling sorry knowing that Ray was going to be murdered, but then he started talking and all the shame for his machismo went away...
If Maki is a better detective than you, how are you going to put her to work at home?

"when we will make children on our own..." are you sure? Yeah, episode 5 and Ray Pember is already out of the picture. What Light did to him (with such a little suspension of disbelief... he didn't remember his voice?) was ... i'm out of words.

"i will execute Kira myself" LOL (poor sweet innocent Sayu, honestly)

L has no choice to finally reveal himself, but not yet.

I've skipped this anime ever since I found out about anime, because literally everyone kept asking me to watch this.

But now after finally giving it a chance I'm starting to feel that maybe the hype was actually genuine. Hopefully it stays like that.
Also ray dying was sad and just showed the fake "justice" light has been striving for.

I would say this is the episode that Light cross the Moral Event Horizon or at least nears it as he kills a bunch of FBI agents who were not criminals (That fake L from the second episode doesn't count since he was a criminal) While I can't feel too sorry for Raye because he was on that tradwife shit, it was still pretty hard to see him suffer on the ground like that, realizing that he had been killed by the very monster he was hunting.

I feel more sorry for his wife, Shoko and the end teasing L's reveal was pretty damn hype.

My favorite moment was Raye's death, fucked as it was.

Light can hack into his father's computer as well as the data on it. If Light knew that his father had met with L, or his father had told his family that he was working with a great detective, called L, then Light could tear off another sheet of paper from his Death Note and give any reason (well, Light is very smart) for his father to have L write his name on the paper (like Penber did to his coworkers). That's probably why L said to keep anything about the seven of them (originally eight, but one opted out, right?) to just the seven of them.

To be honest, compared to the battle of wits and timing between Light and L, I was more nervous about how Kira, aka Light, would deal with his father, who is the head of the police force and is in charge of his case. His father is a true justice, but is he capable of arresting his own son? Light seems to cherish his family, but he will also kill anyone who tries to arrest him.

For L, I really want him to turn things around. He's already "lost" to Kira in some cases lately...

Episode 5 of Death Note ramps up the tension and stakes as Light Yagami continues his deadly game of cat and mouse with the authorities. This episode is a masterclass in suspense and strategy, with Light demonstrating just how far he's willing to go to maintain his anonymity as Kira. The narrative deepens as we see more of the inner workings of the task force trying to catch him, and the introduction of new characters adds fresh layers of intrigue to the story.

What really stands out in this episode is the brilliant execution of Light's plans—he's always one step ahead, and the level of manipulation and psychological warfare at play is truly impressive. The pacing is tight, and the episode keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what Light’s next move will be.

The episode also begins to explore the personal stakes for those involved in the case, adding an emotional depth that balances out the intellectual chess match between Light and his pursuers. As the story progresses, you can't help but feel the tension rising, setting the stage for what's sure to be an explosive continuation.

Overall, Episode 5 is a gripping installment that showcases the brilliance of Death Note's storytelling. It's a must-watch for anyone following the series and leaves you eagerly anticipating what comes next.

meh, i didn't like Ray anyway, he was a sexist pig, telling his wife she'd forget all about being an agent (a job he made her quit) when she'd be so "busy" with the kids they'd have. good riddance
@gswelcome Yeah, I was feeling so bad that he was going to be murdered just for doing his job until that scene with his fiancé. Probably saved that woman from an awful marriage.

@T-PainBeDamned That said, I believe light is a piece of shit. Anybody with that kind of power, no matter how good their initial objective was, is bound to be corrupted. I knew it when his initial reaction to its success was him trying to become a god of justice. And it was further solidified when he tried to kill L for standing against him.

Its really got to suck for rey, because of him both his coworkers and he himself died which is likely going to result in the deawth of his girlfriend. He likely was doomed for failure the moment he showed light his id but had he listened to his fiance then he at the very least would've been able to at the very least save his coworkers.

Light is not a good person. He killed 12 innocent FBI agents who were good people. Light aka Kira is a sick person who thinks he has morals but doesn't. The character is a psychopath, a murderer and a villain. I don't know how he stands among anime fans, if he's a hero for them or what, I hope he's not. Great character, but he's a villain. I could still kind of swallow that he was an antihero when he was killing murderers and rapists, but now he decided which side he would take. Now he has an enemy in the woman whom Ray killed. Light's father is also there now because his father is in charge together with L and what will he do now. If he kills those five who stayed with his father to hunt him down, will he kill his own father because if he doesn't, L being smart will start to logically deduce who Kira is. Ugh, so many options.
