| I loved this first chapter. Which says a lot because when One Piece first came on TV in America, I thought it was a joke. I'm glad that I was wrong. Usually animes screw up the manga, but yea I agree. If the anime had started off like this, I SO would've been hooked on to it. |

| Very good beginning and, I hate to say it, but I agree that this is a much better starting point than the anime. Of course, the anime later does this back story anyway..so it isn't quite that big a deal. I don't remember the scene where Luffy cuts himself though... |

| I don't know why the people around him aren't trying harder to stop him from becoming a pirate. He's basically saying "I want to rape, murder and rob my way through life! :D" and the only one that seems to have a problem with it is the mayor. But I suppose he'll just be a pirate in name and just rob other pirates or do odd jobs or something, he wouldn't be the hero if he were a real pirate. |

Remembering being surprised that it wasn't adapted when I was rewatching first ep of OP searching for this :< Shame on them! |

| This is one of the greatest introduction chapters. Just one of the examples of why do we love origin stories. Great origin, magnificent art and an upcoming adventure that will probably be as great as the origin itself. I'm not too too excited but since it's a journey story, it will probably be good. By the way, the way mangaka introduced characters just amazed me. I didn't see any panel design or any introduction like that. |

| Finally started reading this after my sister bought the first volume in Japanese. Wonderful first chapter to the start of a great series. Luffy learning what is to be a true pirate. Seeing Shanks risk his arm for the new generation of pirates. The little Easter egg here and there from watching the anime is going to make this an interesting read. |

| Now that i'm caught up with the manga, i'm seeing why there are people rating the manga more highly than the anime itself. My journey begins yet again ! Even though the last time I read One Piece was about more than 10 years ago from 7 volumes that I used to own. Also i'm surprised there aren't much comments here. |

| A good start to the series. I don't get WHY he's so concerned about being brave but his motivations in regards to being a pirate at least are clear. |
