Whenever I check out a new Science Saru anime for the first time, I always roll my eyes at the ugly and off putting designs created, to the point where I'm actually anticipating ugly ass characters in their next upcoming projects.

It's like they're passive aggressively telling everybody that "hey, we don't need good looking characters and bait characters in our stuff like all the other studios, come on over and have a look", like they're throwing shade at everyone else for having nicer looking designs. It comes off as very pretentious to be honest. You're not better than everyone else, just because the vast majority of your main and side characters look quite ghastly.

Slightly off topic, but still somewhat on point, this whole "daring to be different" vibe they have going on at the moment, may impress some that are easily swayed, but I feel like it's coming off extremely forced and the lack of a good compelling story and/or plot is what matters most in non slice of life anime, which Science Saru LACKS in spades.

It's brand identity at this point.
Doesn't mean you have to like it (I don't like it either) but I don't think they can change it unless the management goes for some aggressive rebranding.

I don't find the characters and the design ugly, I actually find it pretty and it's great to see original character designs!

At this point I prefer calarts over their "avant-garde" BS designs.

Saru just has a purposefully narrow demographic and you probably fall outside of it. I think they genuinely want to design characters that don't fall into the normal appeal, and I'm glad they bring some variety even if it's not always a hit. Yurei is definitely a flop, visually and in terms of writing, but that's due to them not being weird enough instead of being too weird. It feels bland to me because it's half-assed in Yurei - the setting is just vaguely out there, the characters feel lazily "odd" and the plot is a little exciting in concept but not nearly bold enough to follow through.

Berry's design is pretty cute, and Hacks is okay,

Finn ... is ridiculous, Hanks is hilariously stereotypical, smily is .. creepy loli and the grandma is a generic grandma, but in a robosuit sometimes.

it's wack for sure

Character design is definitely a strength of Yurei Deco. The person in charge of it gets how important a character's silhouette is for them to stick in your mind. Every character, even the minor ones, really stick out and you'd never mistake them for anyone else.

I wasn't really a fan of Eizouken character designs, but I personally find Yurei Deco ones pretty nice! I especially like Berry, Smiley (not her creepy smile without the mask tho lol) and Finn ones.
