The blu-ray sold in total 960 copies only in the first week. Which is kinda low right? I thought the WN and LN were very popular there. Then why is it selling poorly? Now I don't know if we will get another season or not. How sad

Poor animation cause of low effort. That’s why.
As much as I love this anime cause of the plot being intriguing as fuck, I wouldn’t buy the blu ray either, they did the adaptation dirty. Not talking about the content, but the animation is just off putting

the solution is clear, buy more novels
"I like young-girl sexual creations, Lolicon is just one hobby of my many hobbies," he says.
I ask what his wife, standing nearby, thinks of his "hobby".
"She probably thinks no problem," he replies. "Because she loves young boys sexually interacting with each other."

Context matters.

The 960 is gotten from here: https://www.someanithing.com/12273

The admin literally states in the first sentence "Please note: Volume 1 sales are not the best, or even a particularly good, way to evaluate a series’ performance."

Keeping that in mind, look at when Volume 1 of Kumoko started selling - April 28. Wonder Egg Priority which has 2 more started selling on March 24, almost a month earlier!

Also, remember that not all anime BD/DVD's are sold at the same price. Spider is sold at a premium of ~$200 USD for the first volume. For example, Re:zero BD/DVD's are being sold at ~$50-$70 USD

A lot of people are saying the poor animation is off-putting, making the series not popular, etc. But if you look at the streaming numbers, in Japan it is no worse than top 5 for this season, and in China it's basically top 2/3.

Obviously there's also merchandise, LN, and future volume sales to consider, but gun to my head, right now season 2 is very likely.

It is popular and the most important thing will be seeing if the LN sales go up, rhall tell us if it's a success or not.

It was never gonna sell super well because it doesn't have many "waifus" to sell it and Ariel and Shiro wont be very active in this season

So the anime is preforming extremely well in Japan and China?? That is reassuring. I hope we get more of this

I wouldn’t say extremely. For me, that’s reserved for things like MT, JJK, ReZero, etc. This isn’t exactly a super strong season after all.

It’s doing well in terms of streaming (I don’t have TV data, if anyone does feel free to share), although the site where I source isn’t perfect (none are unless you’re the production execs).

As for BD/DVD sales, we’re gonna need to wait a bit more to see.

Why is the price so expensive at $200! As much as I'm a hardcore Kumo Desu fan, even I'm not buying it at that price! No wonder it's not selling much~

If it gets another season, I hope they will change to another, better animation studios. So sad to see such great a series gets ruined by animation studio. *cries in episode 14*

You can't really evaluate a sleeper on first week sales.
Kumo Desu Ga, Nani Ka is the type of story that tends to follow the sleeper pattern.

Why is no one buying the bd I wonder?

Meanwhile here you can regularly get a full 24 ep season on bd for $25.

Really? Collector's edition bluray sets go for that low?
The Kumo Blu Rays available now are collector's editions, not ordinary ones.

To be honest, if they had included Kumoko plushies in the sets, they would have sold quite a few more.

They dont even make regular bd volumes, the collectors edition isnt even that great, a few characters sheets and a box insert on card stock, and a poster by the looks of it, maybe if it came with a small figure or a plush as you said to somewhat justify the cost
Early buyers get a vinly/rubber keychain as a promo but its not included in the box, first come first serve

It's just a problem with JP anime bd's, horribly overpriced and piracy is starting to become more of a problem, im not sure for what reason 2 or 3 eps on a bd with a $75 price slapped on it is acceptable.
At least by the time is gets over here its alot more affordable and usually can buy the entire season for about half that price.

they cut out a ton of important moments bad animation quality so yes sales were going to be low that's what you get for butchered adaptations. the first wasp fight was completely taken out, the entire section where araba showed up and kumoko was forced to hide was reduced to a 5 second scene even though it as practically an entire half of the novel.
they cut out so much of the human parts it's not even funny the reason most don't like the human parts are because how butchered they are. they cut out the Mercy skill shun had. they cut out the entire reason Karnatia Seri was able to break out of the mind control. they cut out a section where kumoko was saving humans in the dungeon. which in turn resulted in a expedition being launched to subjugate her which was the actual reason that wizard's party was after her.
they cut out kumoko's mother fighting that fire dragon which is how it got injured. they cut out kumoko's mother mind controlling her during the dragon fight as well.
they cut out another fire dragon fight that took place before that fight. where a younger dragon was commanding other monsters to hunt kumoko.

and thats just the few off the top of my head. it's NOT a good adaptation.

moshoku and this series were my all time favorite isekai's

so i'm kinda pissed this series got shunted off to a studio that cared more about a pay check then doing a good job.

Do you realize that they have to cut all of that in order to get to a certain point before the end of the season? Otherwise it would've ended at a middle of nowhere.
Mushoku Tensei's adaptation had a lot of cut content too.

a good place to end season 1 was her leaving the labyrinth. the araba stuff would have been a perfect season finisher if they didn't rush the hell out of it.

Then the pacing would've been too slow, plus there would've been no interesting cliffhanger/point of interest. It may work for the LN/WN, but anime is totally different. Plus, Kadokawa may have demanded to adapt certain number of volumes.

This.

Volumes 1-3 are fairly slow and focuses on laying the foundations of quite a lot of the mysteries in the series. If volumes 4-5, where most of the payoffs starts and mysteries start to be unraveled, were saved for a season 2 instead, anime-onlies could be waiting for a year or two (assuming we're lucky to even get one) before every piece gets put into place for them. The problem is, if anime-onlies had to wait that long, they'll either have likely forgotten most of the details in season 1 or will care less when the mysteries are being revealed.

As much as I wish Kumo Desu had a more faithful adaptation, especially the human side, I think the anime's pacing is fine considering its main purpose is to get people to buy and hop on over to reading the light novels since it's going to end on a massive cliffhanger on the human side when the anime is complete.

You claim the story was rushed.
Others claim the first 12 episodes were too slow.

I think they did a very good job of hitting the major plot points without dragging things out with a lot of exposition.
The missing aspects aren't critical, are mostly related to side character stories, and are hinted at.
While it might have been nice to have more backstory on Shun et al, that would have stretched the first 12 episodes to 18, and left the first season without any good ending point at 12 OR 24 episodes.
