I'm enjoying this show, don't get me wrong, but the cartoonish aspects that the manga has would've spiced it up a bit. The Shimarin-esque facial expressions compliment the internal monlogues really well, and give Koguma more "life" as a character to me. Actually everyone seems to be a bit livelier, which I think the show could've used. Thoughts?

It’s a matter of perspective or preferences.
You are correct that in the manga the characters seem more lively, that’s because in the manga the characters are the most important, while in the Anime the Honda promotional and advertising is the main goal.
Regarding the LN, the depth and complexity in the characters (Less light hearted approach) is the main appeal.
It’s 3 different ways to tell the same story. They could have purposely being made this way in order to tell the plot through 3 different mediums while still being able to enjoy it regardless of which one you chose at the end.

Makes sense. Sounds like I'll have to try the LN sometime if it's more complexly character focused because I really like that sort of thing. Do we get more insight into Koguma et al's home lives?

I heard that Koguma in LN/Manga is even more cold-as-ice mode as the series progresses. Unpopular opinion but I'd take anime version if those are true.

I still haven't read the LN at all. I've gotten just a touch bored of this show, but Koguma (and everyone else) doesn't have enough personality to have any less... oh well. I feel like this series doesn't actually know how to have fun, I think. It's kind of dry.

I just flipped the pages of the first chapter and... nope.
Typical fanservicy manga.

I can't say anything about the source material, but the OST is playing a very important role in setting the atmosphere in the anime.

Fanservice? Did we read the same thing? Different strokes anyway, I think the characters are better depicted in the manga.

I looked a bit more and yes, there's typical cheap manga fanservice.

This is a similar situation as Keion, the team got a mediocre manga, kept the base line and trimmed everything that could dirty the vision they had for the anime.

Fair enough, I stopped reading the manga too. I really want to like this series in some form, but it feels bland no matter what I try. I still feel like the characters in the manga had more personality, but not a ton even then. I do love Keion, though, the anime, not the manga. The keion manga is kinda pants.

The characters in the manga may appear to have more personality, but they don't. They're cheap characters in a cheap manga, they don't feel like "humans" like they do in the anime. The anime is not "bland", it just has a naturalistic style and Koguma is a quiet type. They actually have much more personality, true personality that it's expressed in a more realistic way.

But we should compare the anime with the manga, not I know that this series originally comes from a Light Novel. Each one have very different interpretations and I believe the anime is much closer than the manga that includes that cheap and obvious fanservice to sell.

[/quote]I don't find it naturalistic, though, nor do I find them "human" in the anime. To put it another way, I feel like the best written character is probably Koguma, but the writing gives most of the characters a very strange interaction style that feels to me like it was written by someone who doesn't interact with other people very much. That works well for Koguma, but it makes everyone else seem off to me, and what I read of the manga before I dropped it appealed more precisely because it wasn't going for so much realism, which to my mind clashes with the show's oddly written dialogue and unrealistic elements.

I agree. Also the manga art style is cuter imo

It depends on whether lively is what you want or not. It isn't, generally speaking, what I desire for me in my series.

I like the fact that this has a more subdued atmosphere actually, which some would describe as visibly grey and bland. There is a kind of sleepy, comforting monotony to it all.

Rock on. In retrospect, I think it's more that the characters bored me than the lack of excitement. I like sleepy series like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou or Flying Witch or Kamichu! plenty, but I found the characters charming and engaging, and the little stories the show told more interesting. Koguma and Reiko never did it for me. Koguma in particular I kind of find off-putting. But, you know, different strokes.
