Just some English teacher who likes cartoons, Japanese and otherwise. I can come across as a harsh critic, but remember, these are all just opinions that I have. Yours are your own and are just as valid.
I feel most people dislike Shinji because they forget that he's a literal child and not some gung-ho shounen character that's meant to be constantly kicking ass. As with most fictional characters, I also feel that some viewers use Shinji as a self-insert. So when Shinji does something illogical or is pathetically passive they find it easier to criticise him rather than look at him as an individual character.
San-gatsu is definitely on the tamer side of things if we're talking about "seinen" or the psychological side of things. While I do appreciate the slow-paced nature of the show and its side characters, I also find the MC to be very somewhat lacklustre and underwhelming.
Absolutely, Evangelion when I think back to it now is honestly just depressing/edgy (for lack of better word) for the sake of it. I guess that isn't necessarily a bad thing in itself, but the incessant 'whining' and 'self-pity' of its characters does become pretty tiresome after awhile.
I was in my mid teens when I first watched Eva, so I probably thought it was a masterpiece; no doubt because I was likely in my "sad boi"/"in my feels" phase". I should probably give it a re-watch sometime soon seeing as I'm now in my mid 20s and my views have most likely changed.
Really enjoyed reading your Evangelion review. Although I've rated Evangelion much higher, I actually quite agree with you on many of the points you've brought up.
