THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------

Well, much like every week beforehand it's better what I feared, but it's not as good as a full panel by panel adaptation would be.

I'm surprised how many things they managed to fit in this episode, yet there are still some smaller beats that I really miss in it. And well, with this pace, the series works but it is stripped off it's emotional impact. It's hard to feel what the characters are supposed feel when they flip flop their emotions so fast.

It's decent, it has all of the key points, but it lacks depth and time for the events to sink in with the viewer. I'd say it's very clinical, technically every single important thing is there, but it's so sterile you do not really experience it in full even though it is there.

That being said, when episode titles were first revealed I feared episode 4 the most, predicting it will be the worst episode of this entire series. And well, if this is the worst episode of the series, it's still pretty damn good.

I'll leave this episode with a 4/5 again. I think of it as a 3, but I am also clouded by an insane amount of bias against it, so I'd say it is only fair to up the score by one to balance that out

This was easily my favorite episode so far! The pacing was definitely better than last episode as it adapted 7 chapters instead of 8 I believe, but either way there wasn't much cut content at all. This episode's usage of music legitimately made me a little teary at times, 5/5 episode.
Silva hype next week!

I haven't read the manga but I feel like things happen really fast no?
Well, the fight wasn't bad, but all the spirits end up evangelized 😂
Anna crying was the best part of this episode (´ ∀ ` *)

I have no problem with this pacing so far, only 3rd episode could’ve been two instead of one episodes, but this one really works! I am content with the adaptation, but again, I’m not a manga reader - only watched the old anime.

Am I the only one who doesn't really like Shaman King so far? Reading everyone else's comments makes me think that. I just think that literally nothing has happened so far and it's episode 4 already... the plot isn't really going anywhere and we still know as much about the characters as we did in ep 1.

Think I'm gonna say adios to Shaman King. Might pick it up again when there's more eps

I'm really loving this more and more each episode. I have zero issues with the pacing so far, and man, I burst out laughing when Ryu went up to hit on Anna. Yep, now I remember the funniest running joke in the manga: Ryu is a pedo. I'm glad that was kept in, it always made me laugh.

I loved that this episode is already remedying some earlier issues in regard to episode 1, and how Mosuke and Amidamaru didn't seem like they were friends, but here, we got another little flashback. And it even included the previously skipped over Ren vs Ryu bit from the last episode; again, not everything needs to be in the same place as the manga.

Ryu is much more interesting as an addition when he's off to the side as an antagonist, unlike the first anime, where it showed he was a decent guy way too early.

Just goes to show you that not every episode has to be self contained and characterization can continue onward into multiple episodes. I remember everyone complaining about that before, and yet it still continues.

Great anime. This episode was a 5 for me, for sure. I enjoy this every week.

Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.

Welp, they sure put that out of the way fast. It was way more emotional in the OG and it also took more than one episode. I don't mind, as long as the quality stuff will be slowed down.

Ryu trying to hit on Anna may have been "fun" in 2001, now it just looks creepy.

Anyways, nice episode overall. The way in how the anime tried to justify an unscrupulous murder was actually interesting to see.

It was always creepy, that's the point. I'm glad they didn't puss out for the sake of being PC like they did with Chocolove's lips.

Remember back when people could distinguish fiction from reality and it was just funny? Yeah, I miss that time.

How is it out of character at all, when you barely know a thing at this point past that she is a stoic bitch who doesn't put up with anything? That's called 'exploring a character', IE, depth, and not being solely one-dimensional. Obviously, despite her outward appearance, she actually truly does care about Yoh beyond wanting him to be his Shaman Queen. That's not out of character at all, it only tells you more about who this character actually is.
Never actually seen anyone complain about a character not being one note enough.

I find character comedy funny.
Just like real people, characters can have traits you can like, dislike, relate to, or not, and it's always both amusing and interesting to see as many sides of them as possible, to try and fully explore who they actually are. That's never not entertaining for me. The only bad characters in my mind, are poorly written ones. Not ones that simply have traits I personally agree or disagree with.

I'm tired of watching this. This is a ok adaptation so far, but the pacing is just too fast. Yoh, Manta, Anna, and Ryu are reduced to the barebones, 'one-word-summary' versions of themselves, and a lot of smaller character moments have been cut. I'm a manga reader, so no clue how this looks to the anime-only crowd, but this anime just seems so generic so far.

I know it's a meme, but the manga is honestly so much better, and I'm gonna go reread that instead. Hope y'all have a better time with this show than I did.

Terrible episode for. Didn't enjoy it one bit. I didn't watch the original, but the first half of this episode felt rushed beyond belief, almost as if I'm watching summary of a story rather than the story itself. The second half was nonsensical and boring. The sword got literally destroyed in one attack? And what happened next was some talk no jutsu and nonsensical development. Maybe if the episode was longer or there was an actual fight I would have swallowed this development but with this? It just feels unbelievable for me.

Again, feels like watching a summary of a story rather than the story itself.

Co-habiting together in a haunted house for 1000 yen rent, I'd guess it's THAT cheap if no one's gonna live in such a decrepit house for Yoh and Anna.

Heh, the gangster lead Ryu just couldn't yet any luckier anywhere, his best place sure is anywhere but flimsy. Having his soul being taken over by Tokageroh to exact revenge on Amidamaru...he's a weak amongst the weakest, with the only weapon he had (Harusame) that makes him stronger and on par against Amidamaru.

The "power of friendship" between Mosuke and Amidamaru (or the possessed Ryu and Yoh) kinda lacks substance due to the overuse of the trope nowadays, but I've gotta admit that it feels fresh back in the day.

The pacing will always be fast, and Tao Ren doesn't know when to give up.

No I know it's not a a battle shonen and I'm tired of people thinking the only problem with animes nowadays is only the expectation. Destroying the sword that's hyped so much and that he stole (off screen by the way) in one attack then talking no jutsu the guy in few minutes is bad storytelling. If you have given it some more time for the development to happen or at least made Tokageroh put up more fight before they talk him into becoming good again would have made it make more sense. For the moment it's just pure nonsense for someone like who didn't watch the original and doesn't have background to cover the gaps. This feels like characters changing their views over night.

Another conflict was solved with nakama powers, presented with a slideshow. At least they didn't go the might-makes-right direction like the last episode. I didn't care about Ryo dying or living, or his friends. The only thing I knew about him was that he led the half-baked gang, didn't steal because he didn't want to make his mom cry, and he is in love with a 13 y/o. Not surprised the rating is much lower than the original.

This was quite an emotional episode, Yoh did another unbelieveable thing but his trust paid off. I like the guy. Anna crying was surprising but I guess even a strong minded girl like her will cry when her loved one is in danger. Also her getting embarrased later was cute.

What happened to Ren thou, he became even edgier.

A rating based off literally 4 episodes of 52 vs a series that is now 20 years old and completed is a pretty hasty comparison.

They are trying to adapt a 300 chapter story within 52 episodes, that's an average of about 6 chapters per episode when a good average is 2.5-3 chapters for a Shonen. Also the story was made over 20 years ago when the story telling conventions were fresher and more common.

That's exactly what happened.

Over all a decent episode. The big issue will likely remain to be the pacing, fitting two episodes into 1. Looks like next episode we get into the good stuff.

Good episode, Anna is definitely my favorite character so far easily. Though this episode like the previous episodes so far, could have hit harder if it was given a bit more time, but it's not bad at all. I guess it's fine for these introductory arcs though, maybe once they've introduced all of them they'll start to slow down a bit.

Oh, and this was another episode of Manta taking L's lmao. I guess Tokageroh will become Ryu's ghost now based on the OP and ED. I really do love Tao Ren's voice though, Romi Park goated.

I really want to like this show, but it's really not good
Episodes 1 and 2 were rushed, but passable. Episode 3 had bad characterization, directing and editing.. And here once again we have a newly introduced character with a 600 year old grudge, having a change of heart in a matter of seconds thanks to some platitudes from Yoh. In retrospect all 4 episodes so far feel very formulaic as well.

I haven't read the manga, but this show really makes you appreciate the liberties the older version took with adapting the story and the vastly superior directing it had. Watching the first episodes of both back to back, is like night and day.
This version seems to be enslaved to the manga but isn't clever enough to make sensible changes to adapt to the new medium and its episode count.

I agree, that it's hard to remember Ryu is only 17, but he still looks like a full grown adult, and the author takes it further and further, obviously highlighting it more that Ryu is into the underage girl type. There's flat out a panel of an adult woman trying to make a move on him and he flat out shoos her off with "No thanks."

Then you get his later obsession with Lyserg (no doubt because he thought he was initially a cute loli) and yeah, Ryu is definitely a lolicon and it's played for laughs.

Really like this episode based on "Ryu" Wodeen Sword character, The Best Places is one of my favorite things of Shaman King, in the old version they give more time and used a lot.

I' don't remember Ryu chasing Anna, a view again old version the last year, it was very good,
but in the end have a lot of "Lily's five Filler" episodes.

I' don't remember details of the manga because a read like ten years ago, the diferences where a lot of
more blood, details of bisexual Ryu and "new 3 arcs".

It's funny how Ryu chase whatever is in his sight lool.

Anna crying and trying to murder Ryu was one of the best things.

The next episode with Silver can be Awsome is they do right.
