Correction, Production started in dec 2019, not pre-prod, but doesn't change the circumstances, and tbh, if pre prod started in dec I would've lost all hope

If the production started in dec 2019 then thats more than enough time to produce 12 great episodes. So the schedule isn't that fucked after all. You can outsource 4 eps and make 12 eps in house problem solved. It usually takes a year to create 12 eps season
Source https://youtu.be/Ip_GuLQErVg
also, despite the schedule being 'one year' , Cao has mentioned they had other ongoing project too (dorohedoro) when working on AOT production, so they literally working on multiple projects at the same time and they probably have to prioritize the work for Dorohedoro cause it's airing soon back in Jan 2020 and when Cao join AOT team , he just started to work on Dorohedor ep 10 production so yeah...the workload is really straining + Covd hit... so 'one year' really isn't enough for the staff especially they are totally new with the making of AOT...😓

I was one of the BIGGEST AoT stans.....
This is ridiculous...
Start of the episode, back to eren. I see Tybur falling from the sky.
Eren catches him. I'm HYPED AS F...
Then I see Titan Eren looking like he's straight out of a Tom and Jerry episode, eat Tybur in the MOST comedic, cartoonic way....I cringed.
Then after that, I see this dude sit there watching as he's too scared to move...
I see Eren's HAND DRAWN face...
I get hyped again. I see Eren charging him and RKO'ing the living shit out of him.
I GET HYPED. MY ADRENALINE OFF THE CHARTS AGAIN
I see the warhammer titan, hand drawn transformation. Im like, damn this can be salvaged....
I see Eren knock the living shit out of WH titan and punch her like Chris Brown punched Rihanna.
I get HYPED cause Eren was in the zone
It was like some UFC fight.
That.....was my mistake...
I thought for a second it was salvageable...
Nah....MAPPA deserves to be Cancelled.
For the people saying its ok and different....Did we even watch the same episode?
You remember those old days?
Levi ODI Gear scenes. Beast T vs Levi, Eren vs Annie,
Levi standing in the building as Beast T throws boulder and that beautiful SLOWMO Scene...
You telling me you see NOTHING WRONG?
Bro.....WH Titan looked like it was animation from when Animation was first discovered...
WTF IS THIS....
Bro...come on. This was supposed to be THE show.
Sooo glad I bought all the AoT merch. Manga, spinoff, light novel, before the fall. all Box sets out to this date......IM SOOO GLAD I DIDN'T BUY THE BLUERAYS
I could have never finished the entire show....

When Eren pulled out the WH titans hardened core off the wire or w.e
Did you hear the sound effect?
THAT SHIT WAS STRAIGHT OUT OF A CARTOON LMFAOOO
NO this should be illegal.
Studio Clown did a better job with Tokyo Ghoul

I have no complaints with the other episodes but.....this episode sucked ASS. LMFAOOOO

The thing is people don't want this to be a GOT S8 kinda situation where the ending of a great show is ruined. Granted it will be ruined because of different things but the status quo is the same. People are desperate to not see this fail and clinged to any hope they got before the episodes aired. Now that they have aired and they're out for the world to see, they make up excuses and even worse boycott any criticism or opinion. Now some people react in a different way. They accept that this season is inferior but to compensate for their anger and disappointment they harass the staff. They can't get over it. They haven't moved on. Some people like you and me have moved on and are able to see clearly. We are sure disappointed but we don't go harassing people because we're not that pathetic.

You are right. The show is kinda ruined for me. The director said to keep your expectations low. But i was desperate to not see this fail so i still kinda had some expectations. After the ep aired i was very dissapointed, but the idea of harassing the staff never crossed my mind. Some people were saying the cgi was amazing but I'm not that much of a fanboy so I know cgi attack titan is as bad as cgi can get. It was kinda hard to move on. But after i made peace with the fact that it is not gonna be as good as previous seasons, I enjoyed the ep quite a bit and moved on. I'll fall as low as to harass people for a cartoon.

I see your point of Money>health but he wasn't talking about himself so your one line "All studios could care less about you" doesn't make any sense unless you are talking about staff as you have already said that caring about staff is a weak thing anyway so you might be saying that.

"I think I wanted to attack something. Like betraying people or hurting people. And, well, it's not exactly nice, but hurting the readers too... In all honestly, I feel that's what I really wanted to do. For me, as a reader, when I think, "this manga will remain in my heart," it means, for example, it phenomenally hurt me: It's those kinds of experiences I'm after." - Pajime Hisayama (My favourite hurting author).

Yup anyone who like clownass cgi attack titan is a mappa fanboy. Because that thing is...... Uuhh cant find words to describe it. Action sequence are ruined, previous season had miles and miles better action sequence. Cgi scouts you gotta be kidding me. Do you remember kenny squad coming through the street to hunt levi that scene was beyond amazing. Now compare it to this ep and say it to my face that it was at the same level. I get it the episode was good and the story is carrying it. But you gotta understand its a downgrade.

In your opinion, it’s a downgrade but not to everyone else.

WIT pulled off S2 in a year (entirely in-house with freelancers and such) meaning MAPPA with better management could've likely pulled it off with outsourcing like what WIT did in S1 (9 episodes) but oh well.

Btw spoiler tag your Levi comment. This thread is meant to be spoiler free

should we really keep praising MAPPA or this same mediocre adaptation and overworking condition of their staff will keep on happening?

i recently happen to read this argument and it applies to the whole Anime Industry as a capitalist or business, the same mistake of mediocre adaptation and overworking of their staff will happen if fans blindly praise this people especially the executives or upper management of MAPPA and the production committee

do you agree? but ye never harass the ordinary workers or staff of MAPPA and any other studios for that matter since ultimately they do not have the final decisions on big decisions its always the upper management or executives that have those
As someone who read some of the manga after watching the anime first to call this adaption medicore is just wrong. They adapt his story well while fixing all of the rough art. Now about the other thing you mention, it's a good question to ask but I feel people like yourself just want this to be perfect as you and others have invested so much into this series. You just want it to be treated well. I don't know what is going with Wit Studio but they haven't made an anime in a year. The production issues are becoming too much if you ask me if it took us four years to get a season 2. Granted some of that delay was due to greed on both the creator's part and Wit Studios' part(Their anime that rip off AOT). Th row in two live action movies no one asked for and some bizarre kiddie spinoff, and I'm left asking myself this, "Why isn't this series bigger?"
I haven't updated in years but now I have changed that. I'll be free soon.

Great Pretender...... Anyways they're working on an original releasing next season.

Idk how the fuck the live actions are meant to be related to WIT

The kiddie spinoff was done by IG ...

If that 4 year delay didn't happen there'd rather be multiple 2/3 year delays. (Isayama expected the manga to end earlier so considering that the 4 year break with yearly adaptations after made sense) S2 was greenlit early.

Just for your information, things will be fixed in the Blu Ray version. Here's the message from Ep 6 director.

I don't think Western people and people in general look so ugly. And anime art doesn't look like Asian to me. It looks like unique anime style to me that cannot be found in real life. Last I checked, real people don't have such large eyes.

Also that excuse of not getting used to the new art style smells like bullshit. They're saying this as if they worked on the previous seasons and now that there is a new season with a new look they're having a hard time adjusting which is as we know is not the case. It's literally a new project for them. Then why didn't they have problems with JJK? Why don't other studios have the same problem then? I'll tell you, because such problem doesn't exist.

Moving on, the director indirectly confirmed that they were lax during the animation process when they mentioned that they have to fix the issues and couldn't fix on time because the number of issues were huge. This also confirms that Mappa themselves believe that what they delivered is not up to par. Now fanboys can't defend them as the defendant itself has confessed to it's mistakes.

So here's the clarification, the original post is shown below, what happen is that there's a popular chinese youtuber channel that feature on AOT stuffs, the youtuber is aware of Cao's involvement in the ep 6 production, so they PM him to ask him some questions about ep 6 issues, this youtuber couple is pretty famous among chinese community for doing explanatory videos of AOT series and Cao is a big fan of them too so he willingly answered some of their questions below

and please note the AOT chinese community concerned more about the flawed character designs issues in EP6 compared to CGI, especially towards the plump looking of Floch & Jean and Mikasa looking like Mankasa😑 they make a really big deal about the scouts character designs looking bad in this episode🙄, that's why the answers replied by Cao is directing towards the chinese fans concerns , he is not addressing this towards the western fans or other international fans problems with CGI or other issues....

Translation :

Q: Good morning Director Cao, I watched the AOT interview before that Tomohiro Kishi sensei handled the character design for this final season. However in Ep 6 when the 104th Survey corp scouts return, many fans (the chinese) said the characters all look weird & fatter😅 , their faces all turn round-looking lol 😂
Do you mind to reveal a bit of why it looked this way in this episode?

C: Well there could be 2 reasons of why the fans may think the character looks 'fatter'.

1. The fans are not used to the new character design. It is true that our new character designs lean to make the characters more realistic and solid-looking. Tomohiro-san character design has more of a westerner look and body built, it's a total different art style compared to the previous 3 seasons, so it's normal for the fans to feel weird about the new looks, the discomfort is likely the results of the change of art style.

2. There are issues during drawing and colouring process, part of the animations went off-model, we've been trying to fix those flaws in later stage but in the end there's too many of them to work on and we couldn't complete all of that, it's a shame & a big regret here, please bear with the TV version for now because in Blu-ray version the staff will usually fix those off-looking faces back.

dont mind off-models bro that can be fixed in the blu-ray, if we get some quality key animations (sakuga) then I give a shit about cgi, we saw in season 2 episode 7 scouts cs colossal titan how godly cgi and odm moments can work, look at mikasa vs warhammer that was fire

the production schedule will keep on tightening in the middle of episodes of any anime so this is expected imo

do you think chances are high spend some time to hand draw 1-2 fights in the bluray? I mean when the final season is finished there is no reason to rush it and they could fix even some fights with more 2d
Attack on Titan ended with chapter 123 and 130/131 is the epilogue

No way, that would be way too much work, also they would't even have time since the blu ray release is not very far from the end of the season

I don't understand why it must necessarily be bad to have so many Ads? The last episode of the second season had even more and I don't think it sucked. You are pessimistic inside if you already judge the episode on mess, I would have been more worried if it was a dialogue episode but with action episodes like this it is perfectly normal

the mikasa/warhammer was not impressive sakuga in terms of 2D though there are no super animators that done any sakuga on the last episode afaik

except Sakai that is just an effects super animator

Ok but how can you be sure that overall the episode will be bad to see? You can't have it only for the 11 ADS, you can speculate on the state of production ok but it could still be a beautiful episode like Hero that had double that even, despite having the colossal in CGI

did i say its guaranteed? i just hope it wont melt because that is the usual case on other anime with lots of ADs

lots of ADs is a sign of a troubled production thats it

plus this is a different team than WIT has

Shinichi nozaki( one of the AD) seems to have quiet a lot of experience with previous season s. He has worked on season2, 3 and season 3 part 2..

dont have to be with every episode, wdy think hayashi mean that not every titan will be cgi? We know all mindless are 2d, so could he mean some shots between 2 shifters, "that" fight or the end fight (chapter 116-119)?

Looked through the staff list. Easily the most talented so far imo. Production health not so much.

I think 2 of the CADs are MAPPA staff or Hayashi contacts (Garo, Taisho Samurai, Rage of Bahumut. 3rd one recently worked as CAD for Kaguya Sama S2.

ADs are interesting considering one of them was CD, CAD and AD for Vinland Saga and Anicient Magus's Bride

Another one has heavily worked with AoT as well. In S3P2, Key Animation in Episode 54 and 59, 2nd KA in 55, 57, 57 and Assistant AD from 52-56

Hiroko Komatsu is the only one who's worked as AD for this season and working again on this episode.

Multiple ADs seem to have come over from Taisho Samurai now

This episode either becomes a meltdown or a beautiful mess which will look much more improved in the Blu-ray.

Ofc that's hoping the damn blur isn't overused for once. Dunno how CGI will be this time

Can we expect the quality to be even worse during the final battle in WFP arc than it is already ?

well looks like they are talented ADs here though if they have the Vinland Saga ADs and CAD joining them

so hopefully the talent will overcompensate again for the lack of time

but ye im still worried since more ADs is a sign of a troubled production on any anime

what is WFP arc? lol i feel like im not much of a fan of this franchise by not knowing acronyms and jargons like that
