I’m the anime only, and i felt this episode was a masterpiece, they totally got me with all the mysteries. It was so sad Puck finally cancel the contract, and now Emilia have to stand with Subaru.
I know it would be too soon, but Re Zero make a superior standard for Winter Season, lets see for the other anime who can do with this pace.

I can already feel how much pain this season will have, but so far this episode was fucking amazing, it already pretty much surpasses the entirity of the first part of the season !!
Finally, the second part of season 2 is back. Part 1 was so good that I have been waiting for part 2 for a while now. Episode was 1 was great and I am really hyped for the rest of the season.
Sigh, good episode but boy did I place my expectations too high. Since it was a new cour, I expected things to pop into action and there to be a major turn in the story or at the very least, a significant change to the overall narrative of the first cour's plot-line, but it was just more of the same.
Great development with Emilia, but it just honestly wasn't what I was hoping for or expecting with this new cour.
The subaru bet scene was a bit weak tho , it always surprises me whenever Subaru goes full smiles with roswaal while only 10 mins before he was cursing him.
Otto chad is all i can say , although the animation feels a bit off doesn't it

It was far better in the Novels and had more impact, the stakes are still there and it's higher than ever though. I thought the animation was an improvement over Cour 1, what did you find off?

ye there's always the problem of it not being adapted well ,prolly due to the LN

Ah i felt like the animation was'nt smooth , ye but S1 always had the better animation ,this might be as well have better anim which we can test from the action scenes

The next 2 episodes which will be finishing off Volume 13 should have really good pacing so look forward to that.

Season 2 really suffered in terms of production, I recently watched a video about Re:Zero Season 2's Production and it seems most of the staff that were part of S1 did not come back for S2, and the virus wasn't the only factor as to why S2's quality is lower compared to S1, and it seems the rest of Cour 2 will have around the same quality as WhiteFox prioritizes consistency over fluidity.
Xdes said: Great episode, though it was tad fast paced.Disappointed with the lack of mention of the soul-binding contract, would had raised the stakes far more.
Roswaal still makes the soul-binding contract but he does not inform Subaru about it and it is revealed in the end instead.
WNchad said: Oh yes, it was! The soul contract allows for actual stakes. The bet doesn't carry over anything, Subaru could just start over and lie again. And he did it with scarce info as to not abuse his rbd as Satella wished. Why do you spread such misinfo? Did you actually read the LN?BECAUSE IF YOU DID THEN

Your replies baffle me. Fav character doesn't equal to waifu. Is Subaru your husbando? Adding to that if you can't understand why that scene was shown and instead stick to the outdated plot of 2014 (WN) then maybe you should drop the novel?

not a big prolem tho , i never expected re 0 to have some ufotable tier animation.
Omegeria said: Holy crap 100 pages of a novel?!? Well that explains why the pacing felt so damn rushed. What makes you say the next 2 episodes will have great pacing?
Because there was a leak about the pacing of the first three episodes. So far the leak seems true based on the 1st episode. If the leaks for the next two are also true then EP40 will be adapting 51 Pages and EP41 will be adapting 68 Pages, and EP41 will be the end of Volume 13. Leaving 9 more episodes and 2 more volumes to be adapted.
9 episodes for 2 volumes? I think we might get a season 3 announcement when this season ends, as it seems likely it will end with the prologue to arc 5.

I actually think they are going to give 5 episodes to either Volume 14 or 15(Hopefully Volume 14). The ending to Arc 4 is really climactic and I wouldn't want it to end any other way.

I'm talking about a possible after-credits scene when
they receive Anastasia's invitation to Priestella.
But we just have to wait and see how will they adapt it.

Oh my, I would never forget that! Isn't that the scene that breaks all the fundamental rules of contracts and creates a massive plot hole that shattered the LN's credibility?? I'll never let that go. It's like a magnet latched onto my brain. I sleep but I toss and turn just thinking about MUH SECRET contract and all the people who defend it, still buying the LN and giving the hack editor more money. Yes, I would never EVER forget. *sigh*
You say I haven't read the LN, have you did either? Volume 15 isn't translated. If some fan translated it, PLEASE send it to me. So I can have a good laugh then return to the superior WN.

Why would I drop the LN when it has provided me the most laughs?
If the WN is outdated, why does Tappei keep continuing it?

I fail to see how it is a plothole. In fact, arc 4 WN had a plothole which was corrected in LN.
> giving the hack editor
You mean, Ikemoto. Chosen by Tappei himself. And let me tell you that WN is more advanced than LN. But the scenes that are corrected (not removed) are canon. Author will likely follow that path too. Adding to that, sometimes LN adds more lore and character depth than WN.
WNchad said: You say I haven't read the LN, have you did either? Volume 15 isn't translated. If some fan translated it, PLEASE send it to me. So I can have a good laugh then return to the superior WN.
Volume 15 isn't translated in English yet. It is translated in Korean, Chinese, Polish, etc. Plus you can always buy it online and machine TL it.
In fact, the Tieba community also translated many important scenes of LN to English.
WNchad said: Why would I drop the LN when it has provided me the most laughs?

Keep continuing it? Tappei continues the future arcs of WN which will most likely follow the LN since there are scenes that are altered from WN that act as plot holes to the story.

Sigh...
You know there are translation to languages other than English, right?
WNchad said: If the WN is outdated, why does Tappei keep continuing it?
1. Tappei said he won't abandon WN fans.
2. He treats it as a draft version he can later polish in the LN.
swirlydragon said: I fail to see how it is a plothole. In fact, arc 4 WN had a plothole which was corrected in LN.
It's a definite plot hole. If Roswaal can make a secret contract anytime he wants, why didn't he just put a secret contract on Subaru and make him follow all the gospel's orders? He Would've achieved his goals easily and the story would end right there.
Plot hole in arc 4's WN? No such thing. Mind showing me it?
Yes, him. The guy who's embarrassing the series right now.
You mean, Ikemoto. Chosen by Tappei himself
How do you know about the selection process of editors? And if Tappei chose that guy, then he made a huge mistake. It doesn't matter really, Tappei's rolling in Rem bucks right now.
swirlydragon said: And let me tell you that WN is more advanced than LN. But the scenes that are corrected (not removed) are canon. Author will likely follow that path too. Adding to that, sometimes LN adds more lore and character depth than WN.
Yes, I do no know that, and I appreciate it. But I cannot ignore the mess that is arc 4 in the LN. I'd much rather prefer the WN than the adaptation that adds a bit of depth but has gaping plot holes and massive storytelling errors.

Yes, and that's why I hate the LN. I would sleep well if the LN was bad but didn't affect the WN, but it does. That pisses me off to no end.

Ok, if it's a draft, so what? It still has a story I prefer much more than the polished version and I believe I have every right to have that opinion and back it up with logic.
mozgow said: Sigh...

No doubt there is, and I know you've read those volumes too since you make those awesome arc 5&6 LN threads (Keep doing it mate, hope you enjoy volume 23). He hasn't said anything about being able to read it in volume 15 in Polish, and he hasn't said anything about being able to read Polish, but I digress.
this anime has never disappointed me. I'm so heavily invested in how Subaru and the gang can counter the sanctuary dilemma that they are in as of now. I'm also loving the friendship dynamic between Subaru and Otto; makes me wonder about having true friends that wont sugar coat things nd stuff.
from the bat Re Zero came to us declaring why its one of the goats

Letting aside the "plothole", I feel the LN version of the scene is less striking and does a poor job at setting the mood for the rest of the arc like the WN did.

Yeah, even ignoring the whole plot hole ordeal, it lowered the mood that it started. I couldn't find the words to say it, so thank you for explaining it for me. :)

Now this is massive spoilers so anyone other than WNchad, PLEASE DON'T READ IT! SPOILERS from volume 15 which is not translated yet.
Puck: "Because of the vows, the period when I can't leave the Crystal Stone is fixed. At first, I thought it was just a little earlier. Alas, because Lia closed her memory, it might be better for me not to speak. However, now I am sure."
Halfway through, Puck's voice became a little deep. It is usually hard to imagine that his voice will change due to emotions, but now it does carry deep anger.
Puck: "You used my vow to prevent me from protecting Lia. You should have performed the spell on Lia after we returned from the capital. Because that child is very sticky to me."
Rosswal: "...Strictly speaking, it is you who can't be without that child— right?"
Puck: "It's very uncomfortable to be said that, I can't deny that I am a stupid dad."
Puck shrugged, Rosswal did not deny, but closed his blue eyes.
Rosswal: "Fortunately, Emilia-sama is depressed because of the quarrel with Subaru. Therefore, before going to the "Sanctuary", it is easy to get involved in your contract with Emilia-sama."
Puck: "The contract between the spirit and the spirit user is basically inviolable... It's not that simple to do things from the outside."
Rosswal: "It was like that, but I have lived with Beatrice for a long time~ Oh. Anyway, I am very good at exploiting loopholes in the norms.-Although that child is a bit stubborn."
When speaking about the contract, Rosswal suddenly showed a distant look. In response, Puck drooped his eyes slightly and held up short hands.
Puck: “You hope Lia is always discouraged. "
Rosswal: "Yes. So, you are obstacles in the way. The action to restrain you and Subaru can be said to be the most painstaking part. Subaru is the trump card, and you may be the only strong enemy who will lose in a head-on fight."
Puck: "Although very unhappy, you seem to look forward to the Subaru just like me."
As you can see, NOTHING WAS EXPLAINED IN WN about why Puck (who literally can one shot Petelgeuse) COULDN'T help Emilia. In Betty SS, it was also shown that Roswaal was very happy when Subaru and Emilia had a fight. Now I know SS is released after WN, but LN PERFECTLY explains that Roswaal planned all this including why Puck couldn't help Emilia.
In LN Volume 15 Chapter 6.

Tappei Nagatsuki (Author of "Re: Life in a Different World from Zero", hereafter Nagatsuki): I want to do something new! I always talked about Mr. Ikemoto (laughs). Since the release of the WEB version, I have often interacted with readers through impressions, activity reports, Twitter, etc., so I felt like I should involve the readers as well.

Actually no! LN is more refined and you haven't read it so you don't know anything about it. Those "plotholes" you talk about are explained later.
WNchad said: Aight, mate. But did you read it? Do you know any of those languages to be able to read it? I'm not being snarky here, I'm genuinely interested if you read it or not.

Letting aside the "plothole", I feel the LN version of the scene is less striking and does a poor job at setting the mood for the rest of the arc like the WN did.
Well WN has word limits but I still believe LN is better overall. Plus if we talk about your personal preference, wouldn't you agree that LN emphasized Satella more than WN? Of course the anime just skimmed through all of it which was disappointing.

I didn't read the LN and I can barely remember what the WN version looked like since I the first half of Arc IV (WN) in 2018 when I had a burn out because of school and job, so I can't really say Satella's emphasis was better in the LN or not, especially with the anime that cut a ton of content in ep 13.
I usually just inform myself of the LN changes after I notice some change in the scenes from the anime. I don't want to be "that guy" who complains because the anime is a poor WN adaptation when it's a LN adaptation in reality.
I'd be curious to know what changed with Satella in the LN though.

I see.
In the LN,
Subaru's love for Satella was emphasized more than the WN
Here is the scene:-
He called out to her, but his voice would not come out. His voice could not call her…Satella.
If he called her that, he wouldn’t be able to reject her any longer. He would lose to his wanting to accept her. His soul kept on screaming at him, asking how he should deal with that emotion.
The sky was falling. The earth was splitting. Light flooded in, and the scene around them had already completely changed.
All signs of the Witches had vanished, too. The world consisted of Subaru and Satella alone.
There was a vanishing. And then, there was a beginning.
—Still unable to speak, Subaru stared at the Satella right in front of him.
“”
Suddenly, the curtain of darkness lifted.
The subconscious veil that had hidden from Subaru what he had not wished to see became transparent, making visible what rested across it.
And then, when he saw the face peering at him from below, Subaru drew in his breath.
Looking at Subaru, Satella made her silver hair sway, narrowing her violet eyes. And as tears coursed from the corners of those eyes—
“And someday—you will come to kill me, yes?”
The LN emphasized more than WN here. In LN, it is explicitly mentioned that if he even uttered the name "Satella", he wouldn't be able to let her go or reject her any longer. This scene was not in WN nor was it emphasized this much.
Jaereku said: Nope, he just wasn't actively forcing his way in. We can assume he puked lots and got roughed up before we saw him walk up to Emilia, hence how he looked at the end of the episode. Also I apologize, apparently this technical stuff is explained in next week's content so this is somewhat of a minor spoiler, but I have a feeling White Fox will skip it since it's not super-important so...
No problem! I've recently catched up with both seasons and the OAVs (and fell in love with the whole Re:Zero franchise), I was used to watch 9-10 episodes in quick succession and could figure out things by myself easily. This is the first episode I watch weekly, so I still have to adapt to the different pace. This show has been explaining (almost) every single detail in different episodes, so I should have thought this would have been the case as well.
Thanks a lot for the explanation! I'm in the process of retrieving at least all the volumes of the LN currently published in my language (Italian), I really want to know much more about the world of Re:Zero.
Yeah no worries, Arc 4 is very heavily layered & anime makes it harder to retain information compared to books. Also I remembered how Patrasche entered the Tomb despite not being qualified to pull Subaru out in Episode 38 & got hurt because of it, too.
AlwaysHidden said: They ruined Emilia's character in S2 part 1, hopefully they can fix all the damage they did. I also hope this season really picks up in the second half, it has currently done nothing to stand out from all the flood of other isekai besides the blood and gore which... who cares about that?
It established a multi-layered conflict that directly challenges the core concept of the series (RbD), with a complete new character arc for Subaru and a dive into the universe's lore. I get surprised when people finished Part 1 and get "it's just gore" out of it.
WNchad said: Source? He hasn't said anywhere that it's a draft.

All right. This continues where part one left on, and things are now more interesting than ever. I love it that Subaru is determined now where he got help from his friends. Sad to see puck to leave now :(
Re: Zero is back and it's like it never left. Legit, that 3 months went by so fast, it's like I just watched the last episode a week ago.
Every episode so far of season 2 has been very intense and fantastic for me and this one is no different. I am sure those Emilia flashbacks came from Frozen Bonds, I really need to get around and watch that.
Otto proves once again that he is best girl. I liked that they played Straight Bet when Subaru was proposing a bet. Looking forward to the next episode.
Right, let's see if I actually understood the last few minutes of this episode: after promising to stay by Emilia's side all night, Subaru intentionally left her to make her run away and cause a ruckus in the Sanctuary to get a chance to speak with her alone about her past, presumably to give her no option but to tell him everything this time. As part of this, he predicted that Garfiel would go to the Ryuzu room and placed Otto there to keep Garf busy in the interim, due to how likely he is to interfere with Subaru's plans. This doesn't explain where Shima disappeared to, but I think it explains the rest of that well enough.
That aside, though I'm sure we're going to see more loops going forward, I'm slightly disappointed that Puck came back into the fray only to immediately break off his contract with Emilia for some reason. It forces Emilia to not keep relying on him for protection and breaks the seal on her memories - presumably to make it easier for her to face and eventually pass the Trial - but I'm still convinced there's more to it than just that, given that he's been absent in each loop prior to this one where Subaru seemingly asks for his help (and he's presumably absent because of his conscious efforts to break the contract). Also, though I do like it as a plot element, it feels like a loop or two too early for Subaru to make this bet with Roswaal, and I'm surprised that his conversation with Otto led to this turn of events.
Actually, speaking of that conversation at the start of the episode, I have to admit I'm slightly confused about it: in the "true" timeline (i.e. the accumulation of Subaru's successful loops), Otto has known Subaru for, what, one or two weeks (or whatever the exact timeframe is between the White Whale battle and this arc)? While I don't doubt that Otto is quite astute at reading people because of his trade, I find it hard to accept that he's so perfectly understood Subaru in that timeframe as to be able to call him out like that; when Rem did similar in S1 episode 18, the amount of time they'd spent together and her love for Subaru made it easy to accept her calling him out, but I don't get that same feeling with Otto doing it here. It almost just feels like a ploy to continue to give Otto more importance going forward, to be honest.
WNchad said: Wow, can't believe Subaru just jumped into that bet with Roswaal, kind of a dumb move. How will he trust the guy who already betrayed everyone? This wasn't like the WN. Also, I liked that they played Straight Bet in the background, even though everyone expected that.
He was about to choke Emilia too???
Also, Otto is best boy as usual.
OH Yeah, because how they went into the WN with the soul contract thingy was a smart move right?
Oh yes, it was! The soul contract allows for actual stakes. The bet doesn't carry over anything, Subaru could just start over and lie again. And he did it with scarce info as to not abuse his rbd as Satella wished. He wasn't being stupid, he was keeping his promises and trusting the people he cares about, how did you miss that if you read the WN???
You do realize Soul contract is permenant right? Accepting the contract and claiming that you'll suceed in just one loop without a concrete plan is much worse
And guess how the WN handled it? It didn't involve any choking. Doesn't it hurt to see your waifu going to get choked? C'mon, you got to realize the anime dropped the ball on this one.

That is fine but don't come to judge the anime for changes made in the LN for starters.
LN is the official/canon version, if you are going to blame someone is the author himself.
WN readers have story in this fandom of not being able to judge the context of the changes, just the changes themselves.
