Just curious over why there are barely any members here on MAL for this anime. Is it perceived poorly? I thought Osomatsu was a pretty known name.

The first season ranks 1023 on popularity. Osomatsu-san is not really that popular even in mal.

The popularity in the west trailed off after the first season, probably due to the rabid fangirls moving on to taint another series and other fans losing interest. It's better this way.

it was never that popular in the west and even then having a disspapointing 2nd season followed by a fairly decent gap for a 3rd will do that to yah, my friend forgot about it entirely till i reminded him.

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

Oh, indeed.

Maybe it's the lack of promotion. Also, the 2nd season ending felt like a solid ending to the whole anime but overall the season wasn't all that great and even disappointing at times. Maybe people thought there was no point in another season. It was announced quite late too, if I'm not mistaken, so other people might have simply missed its existence.

Honestly, I gave it a chance because of the seiyuus. If it wasn't for that I'd have my doubts too. But the first episode redeemed the series for me. Now I'm genuinely curious to see how it goes.

i thought it did decently on the 1st season with over 100 000 members on MAL. I just didn't expect the watch count drop so heavily since I thought that it was a pretty enjoyable gag anime for a few laughs

Same, I watch this just for my six favorite VAs. I normally don't like most of jokes, still there are some episodes I enjoy a lot. And for most part, I liked the 1st episode. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

I mean, it’s quite obvious I’m a big fan of Osomatsu san from like... everything about me, lmao. But osomatsu is a very Japanese centered anime made for an audience who speaks Japanese. As a westerner, a lot of the jokes go right over my head as they cannot really be explained in the context of English or western culture, and obviously that kind of humor is a turn off, I feel.

I remember back when the first season was airing back in like 2015, it was quite popular with people on tumblr and Twitter in the west but the gaps in content over a few years caused it to really die down, and it just never really picked back up with that audience again.

However osomatsu is a great and funny anime and I wish more western anime fans would give it a chance.

This. Also, anyone interested may also be turned away by the prevalence of the BL community. It’s a shame it takes up about 80% of the fanbase nowadays, and because of this, as well as a general lack of interest anymore, I don’t really see it becoming popular again. There’s been a few OOC clips floating around on Twitter, but anyone who watches based on those may be disappointed when they realise the show is just as based around Japanese humour as it is sex jokes.

A lot of people weren't very happy with S2 when it aired IIRC, i watched it kind of late (right as it ended so i could binge both s1 and s2) so I didn't really notice the quality drop unlike most people. Used to see comments before about S2 being too insulting to the fanbase, especially to Kara so fans of the show dropped off. absolute power move from the staff though lolol
Also the western fanbase is pretty much dead due to it constantly eating itself from within literally check twitter its a shitstorm. The shows mostly still popular with the JP fandom and probably always will be, tons of fan events even till now for the show.

this is more of a problem with modern fandoms, people don't engage with fandoms unless something is airing and then it's all the rage, and then years later people forget about it as if it never existed. i could write a paper on this if i wanted to waste time lmao but it makes me sad people don't engage/create content for something years later, even if it is like one or two years...

Because season 2 was a disappointing follow-up that waited too long to come out, so the fans for it dropped off back then, and this season took even longer so more fans dropped off. It also came out later than almost everything else this season so people didn't notice it.

Aye so I just get back to the fandom months ago after finding out there'll be season 3 lolol

Tbh I feel like it might bcs season 2 took too long to be premiered yet end up more disappointing than the 1st season so the old fan kinda just got bored of it and left the fandom, which make the popularity outside Japan died down real fast. It's still pretty popular in the country tho from what I hear since the anime is apparently quite important for Japanese culture or smthg
Ik there's only 7th episode as off now but personally this may be the season I love more than the 2nd one. I felt like it's due to some, or a lot of skits are either fan/non-canon skits, slow paced and a lot of skits that didn't based around the sextuplets which make ppl bored out from the previous season imo, considering they're what sparks out the 1st season
Although I'm kinda glad the rabid fangirls aren't as crazy as it used to be, I wish more ppl talk abt it the anime tho

I'm guessing it's because a lot of people were disappointed with how s2 was aired. Season 1 had a really good finish compared to s2. Season 3 (imo) almost has an actual story that's going to happen, if the robots were any indication with how much they're hanging around with the Matsu's, so I'm quite excited for this one. Also, I'm a huge fan of the series because of the seiyuus since I can practically recognize them by ear if I hear one of them speak and some of them have been in a series together (like Kara, Choro, Ichi, and Jyushi's VA in Durarara etc.)

I think the problem lies more in the Western fandom. I create gifs for this series in Tumblr and ever since S2, the amount of notes have been dying out since then and people have moved on. I'm not surprised because this series is actually more popular in the Eastern fandom because a lot of them can recognize the seiyuus, the culture, etc.
