I hate the dialogue of Subaru and his retarded references to things that have nothing to do with anything, and him caring about things that don't matter in the least, like in last episode where he wanted Beatrice to apologize for bullshit reasons, and how he never takes anything seriously despite the fact that he faces death repetedly.
That witch was not THE witch right? Its kinda wierd how we only now find out there were more witches.
Yeah you're right. I hate these guys about what he do to Beatrice ...
Another good RE: ZERO episode! Can’t wait for the ED visual
Echidna’s personality caught me off guard. I expect this really EVIL and wicked woman. However, she was seemed calm, collected and lonely. She WANTS attention- the switch from her being calm to her being needy and attention-seeking was funny! BUT, I don’t trust her and her reminders us not to- “I’M A VERY VERY EVIL MAGIC USER”. I think she is manipulating Subura due to very greed for knowledge and Subura existence in THIS WORLD fascinates her
I was kind of frustrated with Subura, he was given the opportunity to gain information/knowledge from the Witch of Greed. But also it makes sense, as he truly loves and cares for Emilia and at the time he thought she was in trouble.
Garfiel is a strange character- he is very thoughtless and wild- but I am looking forward to more of his character.
The cliffhanger was very interesting! A lot of iskeai shows don’t deeply explore how the main character feels about leaving there ‘original world’. I hope he can move forward from his past because at the start of season 1 he seemed like he was a NEET
Ellenwitch said: I really loved the visuals in the opening of this episode, very spooky and colourful. Very well put together. It's spooky how she sounds like Emilia, sure could be same va, but that's just terrifying to think about. Cannot wait for next week.
Echidna isn't meant to look/sound like Emilia. Emilia is meant to be similar to Satella...
Guys, I need help. Emilia is a half-blood right? The Garfeil guy was saying that half-blood undergo a trail when entering the forest and that it was unfair about Emilia. So, Emilia didn't go through a trial? Garfeil is asking Emilia to take it so that she could break the barrier. Are they both different trials?
So basically, could you explain to me about the conversation between Garfeil and Emilia?
Thanks

Everything will be explained sooner or later
Now we're talking. This episode was so rich and I'm so excited for the next one.
One thing I didn't like, tho, was how Echidna's character was portrayed. She's amusing and cute, but the switch between serious and goofy was off and not handled with as much delicacy as in other series.
Subaru's dad on the other hand, that entrance was a great surprise.

Damn I have doubts now, maybe Echidna is not so bad after all? At least she is good waifu material. She did warn us she is fucked up tho.
Of course Subaru HAD to be retarded and we didn't get any useful info apart from the names of the other witches. At least the place being a graveyard explains stuff...Satella fucked them up good to the point that their souls remain trapped.
And did Emilia just fail the trial in an instant? lol
Anyway looking forward to how Subaru tackles his past.
May just be me but the way the episode flowed felt blazing fast. Especially with the Echidna part, felt like I was watching it on 1.5x. Otherwise, not too bad in terms of content despite the horrendous pacing. I do somewhat like Echidna in the novels and having Maaya Sakamoto (2nd favorite anime voice actor/actress overall) voice her was a nice added bonus. The tea joke felt like a complete miss though in the anime due to how fast everything felt for me.
Also, just skimmed through the LN portion of this episode and man this episode definitely came across as really rushed. Arc 4 in general is very content heavy compared to something like Arc 3 so seeing them try to stuff everything in to make it fit in a cour does not seem too promising. So far, the actual events haven't been too bad for me but the way its presented this season just feels incredibly awkward and all over the place.

I guess because she's the Witch of Greed (wants to know everything about the world) she acts in a "good" manner so that she can extract information from Subaru later.
Right, I finally understand the Witch and Sin Archbishops hierarchy now. I've always had my doubts on this but this episode cleared it up pretty darn well, thankfully. Episode still felt really fast though, I've to admit.
Echidna's graveyard turning out to be the Sanctuary was given away at the start when she mentioned "dead woman" earlier in their short but intriguing conversation, but it still surprised me even then xD. Echidna is serious waifu material by the way and mad props to the excellent Sakamoto Maaya-san for absolutely nailing the role.
Roswaal denying that she wasn't evil, unlike her statement, is highly curious-striking too. It's got to be Roswaal up to tricks here, I bet.
Anyway, Emilia little moment of shine was glorious. Absolutely loved that, she's the most selfless being ever ffs.
Good to see Ram this episode too. And quite the lively introduction for Garfiel, I must say. I'm still a little unsure on the whole trial basis and the imprisonment but here's to hoping things will be cleared from next episode.
Guessing both Emilia and Subaru are off to different trials now. Papa-san finally making an appearance too, I knew it was coming from the Op visuals last episode but that doesn't help from making the wait until next episode any brighter...

It's not about her nature per se, but how it was shown and executed.

"Sanctuary" is used to both define the temple and the area around it.
What made Emilia pass out was the barrier at the frontier of the area, now she must past the trial in the temple.
But yes Emilia is half-blood; she's an half-elf.
Garfiel said it was unfair since that's what he feels when he sees humans going in and out the barrier.
The pacing of this episode felt REALLY off. Not a whole lot of stuff really impressive for me, but at least it's food for thought. Echidna as a character is iffy for me, but at least she's entertaining. Some really nice atmospheric vibes when she was talking about the Witches, including herself.
The Sanctuary obviously ain't a safe haven, it's a prison. Despite the events from s1, I felt like Emilia shouldn't have been that easily accepted by the villagers to take part in the trial. That's just my personal take. Then again, I never had a very positive impression of her character compared to that of Ram and Rem.
On the good side, with the nature of this trial requiring both Emilia and Subaru, we can get added context into how the latter lived before he was whisked away into the fantasy world he's currently in.
The Witch of Greed Echidna (another potential evil waifu), hidden within the illusions of the Lost Ruins that Subaru was transported to (instead of the Sanctuary to find answers).
As much as Subaru is very cautious about her, their banter is quite hilarious, but the cinch of danger and scariness over-exudes from just her pure intimidation.
The Trial of the Sanctuary (or more rather, the Witches' Graveyard)? Another new character introduction, and it's Garfiel, with a twist of misunderstanding on good terms. And it's nice to see Ram, Roswaal and the escapeed villagers once again, safe and sound.
To hear Roswaal keep repeating Echidna's name though, it seems as though the Roswaal Family and the Witches of Sin share a common bond, a curse that only Emilia can repel in retaliation to Garfiel's clan. Welp to the villagers who've relented with Emilia's half-elf status of calamity during the entirety of Season 1, but the understanding from the chief was a nice surprise, and a much-needed closure.
The trial of the Witches' Graveyard awaits EMT...but even Subaru...?
Facing your own past...BACK IN THE REAL WORLD??? WHAT'S THIS? The man, the myth, the legend's backstory is at hand...

I just noticed there was a translation error. What Echidna did to the tea was not related to the "Witch Gene of Envy" but what she did was give Subaru partly the Witch Gene of Greed aka "her body fluids".

Thanks bro. So garfiel was referring to Subaru when he said that its unfair?
If you pass the trial then you can exit the sanctuary? Is that it?

There is no trial to get inside, you just faint for a while if you are half-blood. The trial is to break the barrier that prevents half-bloods from leaving.

More like if "anyone who is able to pass the trial" (unlike Ross), pass the trial, all and every half-blood will be released.
Right now the pure blood species, like the humans or the pure demon Ram, are free to come and go.
But the half-blood like Emilia and Garfiel are not, unless all the barrier be canceled by anyone passing the trials.
Echida won so many best girl points this episode. Despite how intimidating she came at first she's very cute when she wants. Her expressions were on point, and so was Maaya Sakamoto's voice acting. That being said, the scene where she mentions the previous Witches of Sin was chilling. I really want to know more about the other 6.
We also got the appearance of Bakugou Garfiel and the return of Roswaal/Ram. I have to admit Roswaal becomes much more handsome when he's not looking like a clown lol. However, that moment where he talked about Echidna, he looked incredibly suspicious...
So nice that the villagers trusted Emilia to free them from the barrier. After what she suffered, she deserves lots of love.
That ending scene left me speechless. Did Subaru travelled back to his world O_O From what the voice of the temple said him ("first you have to confront your past"), I think it's not that he returned, but it is an illusion made by the temple.
Will wait patiently for the next week to have my responses.
Wow, this one was jam-packed with new information, seeing as how Re:Zero is great at foreshadowing through every single word, I'm going to
have to watch this one multiple times.
"A Witch's tea party" Does that mean that
all of the Witches have their own Graveyard where they serve their Archbishops their own Witch Factor tea and grant them their Authorities?
"Standing in front of me like it's normal" I guess that's one of the perks of being an otaku from another world. Nothing like this surprises him.
Does Echidna not know he's from another world?
So Subaru went there of his own accord. I guess that explains why Echidna said last episode that this is what he desired. Don't know how though.
Only requirement for a dialogue between them is for both of them to exist? What does that even mean?
Sekhmet drove a dragon past a great waterfall. I wonder what this great waterfall is exactly.
Those animations of the Witches were fabulous.
She used the Envy Witch Factor to strengthen resistance? How does she have that Envy Witch factor, shouldn't she just have the Greed one? And resistance to what?
Now I see why I always see people saying Echidna is best girl, I thought it was a joke because I couldn't see why they would think
what is supposed to be an super evil witch is best girl. But she's very cute, she's definitely a worthy rival for EMT.
I'm very surprised as to how Subaru handled the whole interaction. I imagined he would be shocked and on edge, just like Echidna expected, but he
just wanted to get back to Emilia to check up on her. I have to admit, that kind of annoyed me, he could've found out so much from Echidna (though he
would've forgotten it all), but he chose not to.
Interesting how a compensation for a Witch is a vow never to tell anyone about what happened. Just like how Subaru can't tell anyone about RbD. Another
example of how promises and vows are important in this world. But if Subaru never remembers, then what was the point of all that?
Now we know the previous wishes of all the other Witches, and they honestly don't seem that pure evil to me. They all seem morally gray to me. My other theory is that they're actually really evil and deceptively cute, and Satella is the only good one because she tried to save the world by eating all of the other evil ones.
Notice how Echidna calls all the Witches by name and not Satella, she calls her the Witch of Envy because she hates her. And Roswall calls Echidna by her name,
because calling her the Witch of Greed makes her sound evil, which she's supposed to be. I wonder if
Roswall is secretly in cahoots with the Witches? Perhaps the entire Mathers lineage is and he was born into thinking about the Witches as good and the Dragon is bad.
Looks like we found out what the Witch Factor is, it looks to be something in the body fluid of a Witch, that Subaru has now drunk. Does that mean that
he can
use the Unseen Hands now? Because Echidna was saying something about how Petelgeuse's Witch Factor chose him
I can't help but notice how Echidna opened a portal similar to how Beatrice did in E17 of S1 when she threw Subaru out. And we know that Beatrice is a spirit like Echidna. And they're both very powerful and they know all about the Witches. And Beatrice's spirit is sort of bound to the Forbidden Library and Echidna is bound to the Sanctuary as far as we can tell. Could it be that Beatrice was/is a Witch? Edit: I just realized how stupid this theory was, because Echidna literally named all of the Witches already, so unless Beatrice is some long forgotten Elder Witch, this doesn’t make sense.
We meet Garfiel. There obviously is some blood relation between him and Frederica, but I wonder why she warned them against Garfiel then if he's the one
who ended up showing them the way?
Patrasche saving Subaru was clutch.
I wonder what's up with Garfiel using weird words. Beast language? Or Kararagi?
Testing ground? What do they test there?
I forgot how much I missed Ram.
Wow, so the most powerful magic user in the country was severely wounded by this trial, but if the trial was just about facing the past, then why? Unless the wounds are from trying to force his way into the trial without being qualified.
I wonder why they evacuated to the Sanctuary if they knew they would be stuck there. Perhaps its all Roswall's plan to get Emilia to pass the trial? Or maybe they
actually had no idea they would get stuck.
I wonder why it has to be Emilia and not the other demihumans. Because she's a potential vessel?
Also, if she breaks the barrier, would Echidna also be able to break free?
ED sounds pretty good, can't wait for the visuals.
I can't help but notice how when the Sanctuary started glowing green, the design on the inside looked similar to when Emilia was killed in E15 of S1, but it
was glowing blue from the ice. Coincidence? Just reusing the design? Or maybe
when Emilia died, it became a Witch's Graveyard like this one?
Looks like we're back in Japan, didn't think we would get his past so early, but I can't wait to see it! His father looks like the type of dad to have high
expectations for Subaru to get out and become an independent man.
Sorry for the long post, I needed to get this all out. Once again, I ask all these questions rhetorically. I don't want any spoilers, please.
She used the Envy Witch Factor to strengthen resistance? How does she have that Envy Witch factor, shouldn't she just have the Greed one? And resistance to what?
Crunchyroll did the mis-translation. That's TAIDA, means Sloth in English.

As for that scene (if you are mostly caught up with the latest arc (6) in the LN):
Shaula also confuses him with Flugel. And Flugel made the trials in arc 6. And now funnily enough someone with Subaru's voice says the trial lines. Could be coincidence, or there could be a deeper meaning. Especially since we still don't know enough about the relation of Flugel with Subaru.

After all one of the popular theories flying around is Flugel = Subaru. ;)
Now whether that is completely plausible is questionable and if we assume it as true, then we would have to explain a lot of other things. But the relation between Flugel, Satella and Subaru is definitely a point to look at.

Anyone else noticed that one of the posters in Subaru's room was the cover of the Gakusen Toshi Asterisk's second volume? Also all of his waifus have silver hair, no wonder he fell for Emilia at first sight.
Great post @fullofregrets09. You're not so far from the truth but there were too few hints in the anime (yet) to figure it out. All of your questions will be answered this season but some of them in the second cour.

The pacing of this episode felt all over the place and the translations between comedy and seriousness in this always seem off to me but it was still a good one with quite a lot of things happening. Echidna was an unexpected character. And now we will get to see about Subaru's past for which I'm pretty curious.
