What a fun reunion full of fan-service ("the Professor" is here !) with every character apart from Saeko getting some action and the required humour. Each one is faithful to his old self, with maybe Kaori and Ryô who seemed rather childish a good chunk of the movie (I could mention Umibozû but it's a joke so...)
The modernization is everywhere (even running through the story) in this concept confronting the City Hunter to the "present world", with some exaggerations here & there (ex: a virtual visitors board?!).

The great musics from the series sound superior to the rest of an otherwise anecdotal soundtrack. But they're sometimes weirdly placed. On the contrary, while it's nice to hear our old pals with the "same" voice again, several actors have largely lost their voice from back then; and the guest-seiyû sound very good, namely Yamadera and his henchman whose name I forgot.

The movie is clearly pretty poorly drawn and colourized (reminiscent of a 2000 TV show rather than a movie): the bold outline and extremely sharpen colours accentuate the lack of integration of the characters in their (nicely made) environment. Chara-design-wise, most characters didn't change much (Kaori's eyes make a big fifference though) but they're often oversimplified. While the animation is okay (with some well done fights), the characters don't look good as soon as they leave the foregrounds and feature inhuman hands most of the time. The 3DCGI mechanical ennemies can look out of place.

Also, as a theatrical release, it could have featured mokkori jokes. But there were none.

Enjoyment: 4/5
Score: 6/10 Okay film made for fans.

PS: if someone watched it beyond the black credit screen, please reveal me the post-ending scene.
edit: rewatched !

@lukinhasholic How should I know? I am french and do not know any japanese website with release dates. (try amazon.jp maybe?)

@Cbr_Star But Angel Heart was never meant to simulate City Hunter.

@Rayl1ght Is the film finally available easily? It has just been released on "simulcast" platforms in France and is about to be in supermarkets (as DVD).

@tofei No, nothing was announced. The only other City Hunter film released around that time was Nicky Larson:

Though this one might get another film.

Here is a very pleasant birthday film to follow with lots of references. Ryo and Kaori are doing the job so efficiently. I found this one more feminine also without talking about the wedding dress.
The insert songs and musics are very well chosen and not rearranged which is a good thing. I would have liked "Want your love" and "Suna no castle no Casanova" to be picky. Not sure there was "Hold me tight" either.
For the characters, seeing Cat's eye again is a guilty pleasure and I wish they had more screen time. It would have been nice to give some presence to Kasumi and Mick too.

Overall a quite good City Hunter moment.

I grew up watching City Hunter and it's a show that every few years I binge watch like crazy because I love it. For me it really sums up everything that was both ridiculous and yet also awesome about growing up in the 80's.

I really feel like this movie hit the mark and captured the essence of the fun and excitement that City Hunter is all about. Something that I felt Angel Heart never did.

I haven't felt this happy and fulfilled by a movie in a long time.

Oh guys, I watched this movie with tears in my eyes.
How nice to see City Hunter again, one of the best works of the 1980s updated. Listening to OST's of that time thrilled me so much! Cat's Eye girls doing a crossover with Ryo Saeba was my dream.
Can anyone tell me how was the financial income of this movie? I ask this because I still dream about a new City Hunter season.
Anyway, a great fanservice for those who know the tv show! Thanks Sunrise!

Mokkori-man has returned!

Damn those product placements, City Hunter has become such a sellout
Well nothing really has changed that much anyway, so I'm not complaining
Especially the 80s jokes xD

I love how Umibouzu and Miki are still stuck there xD
Oh well at least now there's a cute robot

Wow even the Cat's Eye is making an appearance, Hitomi, Rui and Ai

"Freeze, zoom-out, Kaori is chasing Ryou" ending
10/10 Fan-service Movie xD

Dunno much about availability, in my country you can't really get anime movies easily. Even in cinema it's pretty rare. I just watched it online

Does anyone know Lotus Juice's song title here? I've been dying to find out since I watched it but I can't seem to find any link where I can listen to it anywhere.
HOMURA DID NOTHING WRONG.

Decent movie. Apparently even Lupin III left his mark on the infamous board. Might be a hint of a possible crossover movie... Similar to two previous Conan x Lupin films. That would be amazing.

I wonder who's the next girl in the after credits? Is there another movie after this?

Though I'm vaguely familiar of City Hunter and Cat's Eye, I haven't seen any of them yet. Anyhow I though it was OK, 80's plot, action, comedy and all. 6/10

That was a fun film! A bit predictable and retro, but still fun.

The appearance by the Cats Eye girls felt unnecessary to me, but I'm not a fan of them so I can't judge it.

It looked like they were putting in the 80s music everywhere they could. I enjoy the tunes, but some restraint would have helped.

The animation looks nice, if a bit retro; the mix of hand-drawn and CGI makes it feel like an early 2000s feature. It's not a problem for me, but for some they may be bothered. The character designs look pretty neat and updated, and I enjoyed the updated title sequences (especially the ending titles) - spoilered below.

All in all, a fun film that was as good as what the City Hunter was.

"This isn't the 80's anymore" too bad xD but well one one good thing about 2019 is definitely the erone lol

"The same as usual" boy Ryo... but dress or not, it was pretty obvious that he just meant that Kaori is always beautiful in his eyes, glad they confirmed it at then end, sweet way to go out.

And even back in her childhood Kaori already with the hammer, bet she was born with a 1kg hammer in her hand. Was also nice to see the girls of Cat's Eye.

Pretty enjoyable fanservice movie overall.

@Rei_III

Agree with the placement of the insert songs. Footsteps started off pretty well, but same as the others during the course off the song it didn't match with the visuals and felt off. At least they nailed the end shot and credits.

Animation wise there is nothing really special about this movie.
Its nice to see actual movements of Ryo punch and kicking people rather than the classic still shots with the sound effects.

But what really brought the movie to life was really just the music.
All those old classic BGM's openings and endings really brought the city hunter vibe.
Its a shame that it was Saeba against drones and not something more blood pumping.
I also enjoyed the ending with some of best scenes of the show being reanimated.
Would love to see the Shinjuku Terrorist arc as a movie.

Great movie of the City Hunter franchise. Updated anime and the use of music from the series adds to the whole anime. Action is the highlight here. Mokkori time and Kaori's mallet proves that it is the old City Hunter at heart still.
