The worst nightmare for this movie. I love the DQ video game and the 5 got one of best story so far, but when you want make a movie with everything in less than 2 hours, it is impossible. The game take at least 40 hours to finish.

So the relationships between characters are nonexistent since we don't have time to introduce us, especially with the father.

well i was about to say that the story was one hell of a rushed mess, but taking in consideration that ending, it makes sense. the ending especially gave me some dementia vibes up until the moment the protag decided to stay in that world, the creators basically saying "consume more, trade your life for our product". making this whole movie like one big commercial for DQ V

one of the funniest takes on consumerism i've seen in anime, i must admit

other than that, the animation was solid and filled with lively reactions, backgrounds and visual effects

Realy? Not for japanese people. There were many dissatisfied when they knew that the chara-desygn will not be that of Toriyama. People in Japan are already addicted to DQ and I can understand now their discontent. If you haven't played DQV, it's not worth watching the movie. No i would say don't watch the movie

I really enjoyed the movie and found some moments quite funny.
The pacing did seem off, but the ending explained that quite well. It's probably the first time I've seen fast pacing used as part of the plot.
The ending was very different, I liked it and personally my interpretation isn't quite as cynical. As a big fan of RPGs including a few DQ I like the message it gave, that the stories within the games can be loved, be a part of you and it's not a bad thing.
“I just spent the last two years thinking that you guys knew more than me about life and I just found out that you guys are just as dumb as me.” “Duh-doy.” “Yeah, duh-doy.”

Very excellent. I knew what the twist was going in, I've known for months, but now knowing the context of the twist and the message it presents, I absolutely adore it. It made me go "AWWWWWWWWWWWW" out loud. I don't understand why people hate on it. It's foreshadowed many times throughout the film.

Really good Movie.
Of course the ending was a bit strange and i can understand why People dont liked it. I am also not a big Fan of the ending but the rest was really good.
Sad that the Movie was a Flop.

Would love to see other Dragon Quest Games as Movies in this Style but sadly that will not happen in the next Years.

Very good movie. A little bit fast-paced but it's OK. I really enjoyed it.
Absolutely beautiful art. Usually I don't like CGI and 3D anime but this movie will be an exception.
Interesting plot, cute girls, lots of action. What might be missing?

I recently noticed that with each new anime or game, I'm becoming more and more a fan of this franchise. I love it.

I loved this! The animation, the action, the OST on point... But then came that twist in the end, and honestly I feel kind of conflicted. For a moment there I thought that the virus was going to prevail together with the message that "games are for losers, grow up." Thankfully it didn't. I mean, it's a movie of a game after all. To open up a bit, games are my favorite form of escapism/entertainment and, coincidentally, I finished another JRPG just yesterday. It might be fiction, but the emotions I felt were real. I laughed and cried with it, and it's hard to describe the fulfillment I felt after completing it. Those characters, their struggles, feelings and triumphs are going to stay with me. So I guess I'm thankful for the protagonist, since he felt pretty much the same and wasn't "punished" for it. It was somehow touching, but I don't know, it still ruined my immersion to a point. It was a bold twist that I didn't see coming though. I will give you that.

This movie is a complete mess and a big insult!

The game has enough content for 3 movies/ovas (1 per each phase of the protagonist's life) but they decided to squeeze it in a single movie and in a pretty bad way:
- 2/3s of the kid's arc is told in first 3 minutes using game screenshots! (I came to watch a movie, not to read the whole TV)
- The last 1/3 was rushed in 7 minutes with the dead of the father's protagonist in a tasteless way! This scene should be full of feelings, not a "oh ok" moment.
- Damn that is 10 minutes for a whole arc!! Not even time to introduce the towns/cities!! Or at least give a small 3D scene with kid Bianca for the next arc.
- Without the kid's arc developed, it felt all the marriage part out of place (and again tasteless) because is a decision between two characters with zero story/character-development!
- Disney can do good/great love stories with same -or even less- amount of time!

At the beginning of the third arc I was already wishing for this movie to be over...
dead_inside.png

The only things that I enjoyed where the music, that small segment where the protagonist was on his way to Mostroferrato and the final battle against the virus (that was pretty clever and unexpected but that scene alone doesn't save the whole movie).

This is a big shame because this is my second favorite Dragon Quest game and the movie would attract people to play the game (since it is in the playstore the DS version to play it in your mobile).

Totally agree. For me the movie is a 5-6, tho I rated it with 6, because its fine, im happy to have the world of DQ here, and my opinion got better for the ending. But it could be much better, and it deserves a new TV anime.

In this movie, what I liked most was the music and having the world of QD. I didnt like too much the animation style, and the plot is very average, very predictable, easy. Thats why I liked the ending, because it is more mature intended and gives some deep to reflect, a little bit late.

I prefer a more anime style rather than a "disney" style, talking about the animation.

I just cant understand how you people like jrpgs and dont like the ending.

I can understand u guys having problems with the pacing and whatnot, because as i havent played the original game (yet) i didnt find it annoying.

Other than that as a 21 year old who doesnt have that much time anymore to play games that ending made me tear up and remember why i like games, jrpgs and dq as a whole

im an anime only i never played the game but it was very enjoyable the visuals are great like the facial expressions are so lively for a 3D animation and wow Bianca is beautiful and the story lol its all just a video game after all is so cliche but its great for me

the message of the story is great too lol video games are not worthless or for losers since the emotions and experiences you get are all real

escapism done right lol

i really can't understand why so many people hate the ending twist, i found it really good (maybe a little weird), but if it wasn't for that the movie just would be a condensed and rushed adaptation of one of the best DQ games, and i think that would be worst

The movie was mediocre plotwise, until the genius plot twist, which redemeed the movie for me and I ended up liking it. If only the rest of the movie had some good characters and developments, good arguments, and less idiot or unnecessary explanation/exposition I would have 100% loved it.

Wow! This is a very pleasant find. The production value is off the roof. The twist at the end was a decent attempt even though the story overall were pretty typical and cliche. I enjoyed watching more than i thought!! Never played any Dragon Quest games before here.

Something of this caliber (or better) is actually what most World of Warcraft's fans have been waiting from Blizzard years after years. Not that I'm not grateful that they did a live action movie though!

Opinion from someone that never play the game nor knowing the game exist...

I enjoyed watching this so much xD

I found the MC is wholesome cute. His personality just lighten up the atmosphere. I just love the atmosphere of this movie, it's not stressful at all even tho in fight scenes with funny acts throughout the movie. And I found the slime weirdly cute too xD

I can say it's really rushed at the point where they don't even introduced Bianca or Nera in Luca's childhood that makes them look like random characters that have relationship with him. Otherwise, it doesn't bother me that much tho. But I still want to see more developments of all the characters :(

I didn't expect that ending at all, that just explains why there were robots which is so random xD
Seriously, the developer insert the virus to get him out of the game but forgot the antivirus exist, I can't- xD
I laughed my ass off with the twist.
But does he get out of the game or not...

The animation is super good, the fight scenes are really smooth, the visuals and all. Love to see more anime with this kind of animation. Any recommendations?

Overall, it's 8/10 for me. I simply enjoyed everything and I understand why a lot of people hate this movie especially people who from the game. Please don't hate me :D

I liked this movie. I'm not a huge dragon quest fan since I have only played a game recently. The plot is good but Kinda rushed
The 3D animation is amazing and It let me enjoy the fighting scenes a lot.
The ending is a great plot twist, until the end I thought everything was "real" so discovering all the movie events were inside a game made me feel a little sad. I guess this is a good bittersweet ending.
Also I think the ending justifies the fact that many things have not been adequately investigated, such as the relationship between Luca Nera and Bianca.
Overall I rate this a 7/10.
P.S.
Nera is cute as hell. Bianca reminds me of the dragon quest Co-protagonist lol.

This movie was fun. Nostalgic to see the characters come to life in this movie. Its cute how Gootrude followed the hero the whole movie and has a role! Learning that Dr. Argon was a Dragon also hilarious. Art of Bianca reminds me of Disney movies. Did not enjoy the ending sadly.

I Can’t Tell if I hate or love the ending. I was really digging the final villain. But to say “these worlds are real to me” is so sad. Even if media like games, movies or books have a giant impact on our life, to cling to a fake world and have that be the main source of relationship, is so damn sad. I can’t tell if the ending was reinforcing that notion or not. Anyways Escapism = cringe. I understand having to cope with certain things in life but saying shit like “these people (who aren’t real and who are pieces of code) are my friends and family” is way to far.

This was surprisingly decent. the artstyle made me think this was going to be a generic childish movie, but the movie kept subverting my expectations. first when the mc grows up quick, then when the romance and marriage stuff got done with in the middle of the movie (these usually keep dragging out until the ending and sometimes never resolved), and finally with the ending twist. It was a good experience.

That ending is so redundant and irritating.

The whole twist at the end just sucks any interest and life there was in the imaginative story, to a dead stop.

It felt like I was driving at 80km/h and then I hit a truck going the opposite direction.

Did we really need to insert our own reality & delusions into a perfect content fictional story just because isekai genre is the current lame in thing to be doing in the industry.

It's like showing someone a piece of art thats a masterpiece of the highest caliber but you decide instead of focusing on all the awe and inspiring collaboration, you point and repeat the redundancy of it all for nothing more than some vanity parade.

I can't for the life of me understand why they would torch the story .

Oh well In my world it ended when the hero throws the sword into the storm and then all the characters have their final words and they go back to their simple life and adventuring, etc.

Not the garbage script they selected.

The movie isn't bad. It's actually quite enjoyable but feels very rushed.

The story should have been split into at least 2 or even 3 movies (one for every stage in lucas life).
As someone who didnt play the game i barely got to know any of these characters except for luca, and the whole time travel quest felt a little unnecessary.
Maybe the budget, time and ressources wasnt there for more than one movie?

My biggest issue however was the ending.
What could have been a simple fantasy film was somehow turned into another isekai in the worst way possible.
